That being said, I'm all for Devuan as a source of attrition for Debian, until they pull their heads back out of their butts. Shame there aren't enough takers to really raise enough concern from them.

My ancient (Pentium M era) Fujitsu Lifebook's built-in SD reader reads a 32GB SDHC card without issue. SDHC wasn't a standard for ~2 years after the laptop was built, and 32GB cards seem to have spawned ~2 years after that. Not sure if the reader received a firmware update or anything to that effect.

Point is, it's a bit hit-and-miss, but the answer to your first question it "maybe"; it's a bit difficult to test with hardware that does not yet exist.

Regarding your second question: you want cloud. You're getting cloud. Because the makers of the phone know you need it. You can't be trusted with your own data, so they'll take it off your hands.

Don't take this as a slight against rail or other mass transit services; they're more than competitive with air (especially when taking costs into account), with respect to safety, and seem to have the potential to achieve parity. Distracted/imprudent driving/operating behaviors apply to all forms of vehicular travel, and this seems like the most approachable area for improvements.

  17. Two the plane was taken over by terrorists and eventually dove it nose first into the water. Most likely preventing a breech of main body and preventing a lot of debris from rising to surface.

Entering the water in any way but a very controlled ditching tends to cause an effect reminiscent of a Pringles can being stomped on by an elephant.

  18. Indeed, my proposed question was somewhat rhetorical; if airlines want to shed the image of putting cost/profit at least a little bit above safety, they'll eventually figure it out. I hope. That's also pretty slick, I don't think I had ever heard of this arrangement specifically.

  19. Why are aircraft not fitted with multiple impact-resistant EPIRB-like devices designed to separate from the aircraft and float to the surface? That and/or some sort of massive dye pack. Of course, a high speed impact with the water might destroy them (blackboxes can and have been destroyed by impact too), but having multiple locators on board seems like a reasonable idea. These things obviously do nothing for those who perish in an incident, but doing everything we can to obtain data on failures allows us to be better prepared in the future.
