Software encryption for hard drives == slow. And that's with a low bit key. Impossibly slow at higher bitrates. Maybe you're only encrypting a folder of data. That would work fine, except most people don't trust Windows... you'd want the whole O/S running on an encrypted drive.
And wouldn't that violate the Plausible Deniability? I'm all for the idea, but I remember reading about Rubber Hose a while back, and it just looked pretty obvious to me.
That had to be one of the first ultra-quarter sucking games in the arcade. I sucked at it! I was a bit young for that game. I needed a game I could last at least 1 minute into.
That's the first thing I thought of when reading the article. With all those 'nifty' HP commercials out there (YOu know, where they freeze the scene in the pictures) all I can think of is soaring ink prices.
Sounds like a decent plan to me. I think the goal here is to be able to shut it off when needed. It's not like they're going to shut it off for all of January because they feel like it.
I was about to bitch that the only reason this got a headline on slashdot was because it had Ogg support in it. I'm sick of people talking about how bad XING 128 bit encoded mp3's are, so obviously Ogg is so much better.
LAME encoded mp3's are great. And until you can carry around your whole CD collection in lossless format in your pocket (portable device) then MP3 is here to stay.
Anyway, after reading the article and what you can do with it, I take it all back. It's awesome.
Anyone with any age on them will remember what it was like typing away on a green text screen, chatting with someone from Hong Kong for the first time.
The "Last frontier" is just about over. This Wild West as you put it is now becoming the new medium for corporations. Again.
The last nail will be when censorship laws (to protect the children) and Palladium authenication becomes law. Or even the bit-tax. It won't take long until doing anythign worthwhile online will cost through the nose, and the content bullies finally push away their 'competition'. Maybe it'll take a $1000 license to own a web site, much like trying to do anything with radio waves.
Not that I've ever downloaded a movie, but if you know what you're doing, and know where to look, what is available for downloading is already in a format that's not crap, in fact, is much better quality than I ever could rip/encode myself without a lot of practice.
Well, you've kind of proven their point. It profits Disney to let children think there is only Disney. Why allow their competitors to horn in on their captive audience? The only time any media wants to sell commericals to other companies is when they need the ad revenue. Disney has simply set up the Disney-Channel as a way to promote all its own products. Thus, ad revenue is not in their Accounts Receivable department at all.
That's a good point. The longer we live, the more likely SOMETHING isn't going to work. And when old people break a hip... that's it. It is a downward spiral that leads to a deathbed every time.
Can you imagine what a 500 year old tattoo would look like by then?
Not only are you wrong, but you're wrong in such a big, jerkoff way! Congratulations!
Tivo has positive padding, but needs negative padding to work well with 2 shows in a row.
You are allowed to start ER 1 minute early. (example: 7:59) Except that's a comflict when you record CSI from 7 to 8:00. (You can't double record that same minute) So obviously the solution is to have CSI stop recording 1 minute early. And that's where TIVO fails.
The alternative is to set up manual recording for both shows to start/end on the hour. That sucks for shows that might move around, etc, and then it'll also record non-new shows since it's no longer a season pass. But at least now they're labeling the manual recordings with the show name.
Amen. Same here. Same show. Same year+ of pain. I actually had to deal with it again this year because of a line up change. Sucks because the Series 1 Tivo DOES allow some leeway, but not the leeway in the direction you want.
What I ended up doing last year was slipping in one of the shows as a manual record (allowing increments up to 5 minutes I believe) and then setting ER a little later. Or something. I know, not very helpful.
On topic, I'm surprised the TV networks would stoop to that. It's the continued little inconveniences media keeps adding to their 'product' that turns people to alternative sources, even if questionably illegal (downloads)

My favorite is when Jabba the Hut showed up.

It's getting ridiculous.
Whew, thank goodness they couldn't turn off my compass.

That was funny! Maybe kazaa is only 15 lines of real code, 400 million lines of malware?
Just like in Delphi, you can drag drop Web browsers, servers, ftp clients, etc right into your app.
Heheh. Shouldn't the actualy story get a -1 Redundant? Not the poster!
Hahaha. That's the funniest thing I read all day. I guess the same could be said on opening night of Lord of the Rings. WOWO
But with "Most Addictive Game Fueled by Mountain Dew", that sounds EXTREME TO THE MAX!
Not possible, unless there is going to be a book written on the downtrodden Videogamer.

I'm sure it was. I know that the Register ALWAYS spells it that way on purpose :)

It's no different than the sum amount the slapped Kevin Mitnick with.
Thank god there isn't a new R.R.Martin book each month! I'd never get any sleep!

I typed in "Cumberland" and received more false positives than correct lines.
I agree it was hard to read on my eyes. Amazing what a person can get used to, or not get used to over time...
Can you imagine what a 500 year old tattoo would look like by then?
Your solution was to start a show 1 minute late, which is not an option, here. !NBD.
