So, what's so evil about Disney again? I mean, other than the whole no-pants thing corrupting minds of youngsters, and the various "Donald Duck"-parties that have been inspired by this...
Dr. Hibbert: Well, only one in two million people has what we call the "evil gene". [holds up a card showing DNA] Hitler had it, Walt Disney had it, and Freddy Quimby has it.
while all these issues are valid, people often forget that the conventional methods used for ages are usually much less secure. What about lost/stolen/conterfeit paper tickets? When i first started to use online banking several years back, many came to me saying: "but is this save?". Well not perfectly, but since I found out that my bank would let me withdraw 5000 german marks from my bank account, without seeing any proof of ID, customer card, or any document at all for that matter, I'm certain it's more secure then traditional banking.
I've seen the same system in use for public transport tickets in Helsinki. People send an sms to some number, and the fare is deducted from their phone bill. As a proof of purchase the get a text message, which can be shown to the conductor on ticket controls..
Your PowerBook has an RPC1 drive or an early RPC2 drive. Mine has a later drive and will not play other region disks, even with VLC, while my wife's iBook will. Sucks. I will certainly not buy any more DVD drives that can not be "upgraded" to RPC1. This topic is dealt with in the VLC FAQ if you require more info.
I wouldn't think so, since my Powerbook is a 2005 model. I previously had a 2002 Powerbook, which i had firmware patched to work with other Region codes. Since i didn't find a patch for my new one, i tried VLC, and it worked. Maybe it's just something strange about the DVD i used, don't know, but it worked without problems in VLC, and didn't in Apple's DVD Player.
Can anyone explain how the hardware protection should work anyways? On my powerbook, i can't play DVD's with the wrong Region code using Apple's DVD Player (unless i switch my drives Region code, which would make the drive useless after a while, since you can only switch 5 times). However, if I use VLC instead, it doesn't care which Region code the dvd has. It just works. So it doesn't really seem to be a "hardware" protection, if it can be worked around just by using different software.
I might not have been able to finish the game in 50 minutes without saving.. But when our family's Mac II's screen died, i was able to boot it up, launch PoP by navigating the Finder using the keyboard, and beat the first level, just by listening to the sounds of the game.
Depends on the platform you used. The PC version (which is probably best know) was quite pixelated at 320x200. I don't assume the original Apple II version was much better then that. The Mac version looked much nicer, capable of filling a 640x480 screen.

Yeah. I was thinking about building something like this for years. It would be installed right next to the license plate of my car!

This is not true. Widgets will run in an own process each, and need to take care about not running when dashboard is visible by themselves. If they don't do that, they can run all the time regardless of whether dashboard is visible or not. some widgets currently available from the net don't handle this properly and will eat precious cpu cycles when running in the background.
Oh my god, how many times do we have to say it? People, running Windows software under WINE is not a solution. I say all Slashdotters should boycott these software vendors until we get a serious commitment from them to do true, native Linux ports of their products.
And for that matter, why aren't their open source alternatives to this software already? The open source community won't stay competitive by resting on its laurels
Yeah, Open Source virii is what is needed to let Open Source Community reach mainstream
IIRC Apple did originally plan to label the 68030 Mac SE as Mac SEx, in accordance to the 'x' suffix for 68030 CPUs, as used for the Mac IIx. For obvious marketing reasons, they chose to go with Mac SE/30 instead.

right, because that information is currently readily available on the net, there just isn't a way to search it
Yeah - That's what i like about the Mac Mini. It kinda brings back what has been missing for all those years since C64s, Atari STs and Amigas died. A Cheap, Simple, "home" computer, just being nothing more or less then a computer. How many of you slashdotters were introduced to the world of programming, gaming or whatever you are up to on such a kind of machine?
While CW ran on 68k Machines, it wasn't released since the introduction of the first PPCs. I've been told that most of the CW developers have been working in Symantec's THINK C Team before, though.
Possibly true if you're just looking for getting the most performance out of your money.. If you like "hacks", though, you might want to try out some mods to your car, just for the sake of trying it, and seeing what results you come up with. You'll be much prouder of your fast car, when you've made it fast by yourself, than if you just gave it the standart expert treatment. At least with old engines, there is still quite a lot you can do on your own, and you can experiment without immediatly killing your engine, if you know a littlebit about what you are doing..
1) Draw cartoon, publish
2) Angry mobs burn take to streets burning stuff
3) Sell danish Flags to angry mob for burning
4) Profit!!

That's right. However, get M1A1, which is Marathon 1 converted to Aleph One here:

works fine for me.
