I know we like technology and blogs and all but I can't help thinking that the effort and diesel could be used for other purposes.
Yes, just as the time spent reading countless Slashdot posts looking for one to reply to that makes you sound compassionate could have been spent doing something more productive.
The perspective he is offering as a resident in New Orleans I think is worth just as much as anything else he could be doing, personally.
You are always welcome to dump your own hard earned money and also time into a game idea that you personally think is really cool and watch it bomb. Or you can always sit on Slashdot and bitch that someone else isn't willing to do it in your place.
"We will not allow running Mac OS X on anything other than an Apple Mac."
When will Apple see that trying to be a "Computer Manufacturer" is such a bad business model compared with OS Developer. If their OS ran on something besides $2,000 machines that do the equivalent of $500 common PCs I think they could really see more people adopt their OS as their first choice on the desktop. Oh well.
Any business on earth would be happy to see the profits Microsoft made from this "failure." It was a fine OS with some issues. What software doesn't have "issues" though. See the frontpage of Slashdot today for Mozilla issues that Microsoft would be getting reamed for had they been responsible for them.
Can someone with more legal understanding than myself please explain why emails can be considered as hard evidence?
1) They can't be authenticated: There's no way to prove if the email was written by the person on record.
2) The contents can not be validated: There's no way to prove that the contents were not altered in transit.
I'm certainly not a lawyer, but I do maintain everything technology related here at a large law firm.
A lawyer once asked me to try and dig up some really old email from years ago to file with the courts. We have some ancient tapes around here from before my time here, but no drive to read them. When I jokingly told her that it would be easier to forge the email, insert it into the system, and print a copy of that she almost shit her pants. I have never understood how any court could seriously consider the integrity of an email to worth anything. But, like I said.. they're the lawyers, not me.
Anyone know a a decent Firefox (Win32) speel checker that works in forms liek Slashdot's? I really don't care enough to open Word to fix my typos and other errors.
I had grandiose plans to make a little resident thing for windows that would monitor all textboxes for spelling errors. Of course, I'm lazy, and it's hard. But all the same it seems like a worthy project.
A better analogy would be the success of Valve software's Steam service. It has essentially made the buy, download, play model viable. Add a hardware scheme around it and its even more protected. Speed? so you wait a few days for the download, if it allows the user to demo the game or obtain a rare game they would otherwise have to wait for anyway, why the hex not?
I honestly have never used it, and don't know about how secure it is, but their source code itself was stolen, correct?
I don't understand how or why people can't grasp that it is simply a matter of people using what they already know how to use. A company will not use open source software on the desktop because hiring people who know how to use it will be too hard, training them to use it too expensive. Nearly everyone knows Office, so they will stick to that.
Likewise, if you are a user at home wanting to learn skills that will be valuable to a potential employer, knowing the employers strategy of sticking with what works, you will learn Office.
I don't really fully know what to make of the proposals themselves.. but it is extremely interesting how law & technology are catching up finally. For better or for worse, the fact that laws are being proposed for a service that isn't even fully functional yet is very interesting.
If you want to achieve the effects described in this article, why beat around the bush. Just get some cocaine. Compared to what these things cost, you might even be saving money.
It's always easier to get another job when you already have a job....
Kind of like how it's always easier to meet girls when you're in a relationship. That's why you should always get a fat girlfriend that you aren't attached to, and a job you hate when you are looking for a better version of one or the other.:)
How to make a ZaPPeR GuN By Panther Modern TNO/TBF
The zapper gun is kinda like a commercial stun gun. It is not as powerful, and is mainly used to piss people off, not to put them down. It will scorch skin very painfully, if applied. Total cost for it is around $20-$25, and it is a fun thing to make if yer kinda bored. If you don't know what a capaciter is, read no further, go find out what one is/what one looks like, then come back. Anyway, materials are:
Qty Description Approx price
01 Disposable Fugi-Film FLASH camera $15+TaX 01 Small-Mid radio shack projekt BoX $2-$3 or so.. 02 Dry wall nails 10-20 cents 01 Radio Shack SPST Push Button $1.50 01 1 Alkeline AA battery $0.50
This is to make a fairly nice version. For the raw, crappy version, all you need is the camera. I won't even go into details on making it, you can figure it out for yerself.
Okay. Get the camera. If you want, take some pictures. ALL OF THEM, or none of them. Cause if you don't take all, you'll ruin the film.. Now, when yer ready, first, rip off the cardboard. You'll have a plastic box. Open it up, as well as you can. Be very careful not to damage the circuit board, wires, flash, etc. Once it's open, discard the plastic case, and the film. Now, looking at the circuit board, one can see a fairly empty space. Rite in the middle of it, will be 2 small copper "plates." Soldier your button to this place. YOu may also remove the flash at this time, as it will be shortly rendered useless. Also, you will notice two protrusions of copper strip. Pull 'em off, and MAKE SURE they aren't touching when you finish, cause it will ruin the gun. Next, put the circuit board in the project box. Drill one hole so you can see the LED. THis will tell you when the gun is ready to FIRE! (When the LED flashes). Next, line up approx where you want your two tips. Line up the capaciter with this. Drill holes. Next, drill one last hole where you want the button. Now, remove the generic AA battery in the camera, replace it with your hi-quality Alkeline AA battery. Now, stick the nails in, and soldier them via wires to the two capaciter leads. Seal them in place with either expoxy or hot glue. Now, wire up your button, and stik the LED in the hole you made for it. CLose up the box. Your gun is made.. Just push the button, holding down for apporx 2 seconds until the lite flashs, and touch whatever you want to SHOCK. This gun is semi-lame, but is also fun, and good for boredom..Have PhUn!!
Either way, I have to wonder how effective this method would actually be. Surely I could get around it by simply downloading the file with the biggest number of sources?
I think everyone here is overlooking the most dangerous attack on these systems. Which I believe to be currently implemented. It isn't that the RIAA or whoever is sharing a big folder of fake songs, waiting for idiots to keep downloading them. It's that they are hosting fake songs disguised and checksumed as the real files. So when you see a file with 100 sources and you start to download, eventually you will pull down a 10k chunk from the RIAA lackey's, which is where you get your snap, crackles, and pops.
The fact that a file has more sources actually makes it a more likely target for this attack for two reasons. First they will be corrupting a more popular file, and second their deception will go unnoticed.
After reading that post, I kinda wish that you got raped in the ass while you had a short stay in prison. Maybe you would think twice before making such a stupid comment such as, "those raped in jail deserve it."
So if I steal some game, I should be raped in the ass. I see how the punishment fits the crime.
And then you have to take into consideration how many people in prison have aids, your chances of getting it against your will, etc. So, I'm sure in some cases people are essentially sentenced to death for things like shoplifting, traffic accidents, etc. It's a screwed up system, but no one cares until they end up there themselves, by that point it's too late to make a difference.
I know we like technology and blogs and all but I can't help thinking that the effort and diesel could be used for other purposes.

Maybe if I scratch the serial number up...
Then you'll be guilty of defacing a battery. A felony in most states!
A CD you buy at Wal-Mart may not be the same CD you buy at a local CD shop, despite identical packaging.
The lack of a parental advisory sticker should be your first clue.
Hmmm...I wonder how a censored pr0n movie will be like
You ever watch the USA Network late at night?
If you need something that simple, you could go somewhere like download.com where all of the licensing (if any) is very clearly spelled out.

The system supports itself, and it always has.
Maybe I'll stick with Linux just a little longer, until Windows gets those last few little bugs ironed out.
That's the same reason I ride a bicycle. I've seen too many car accidents.

In this case, it was relatively "instant" only once the news was ALLOWED to be let out of the bag.
/This isn't the censorship you're looking for. *waves hand*
What are you talking about? This is America, that type of thing doesn't happen here. You must be thinking of China. Those red bastards!!
IIRC, the bunch who took the pictures were reservists from West Virginia (I may be wrong). Reservists are not as well trained as regular Army troops.
:)
And people from West Virginia are not as well trained as regular humans.

Apparently, without a valid CD key, users cannot download these updates.
Without a CD Key, you can't install Windows at all. With a CD Key, you can not only install Windows, but all of the updates.
I have never paid for a Microsoft product in my life, but my Windows XP is always up to date.
