While mining is a huge problem in South America's tropical forests, there is also the deforestation problem, both for the value of the wood itself and for cleaning the soil in order to expand the agriculture. The Brazilian government, as I can see it as a Brazilian myself, isn't doing nothing at all to prevent this. In fact, one of the biggest producers of soy in Brazil is also governor of Mato Grosso (a state in which there is a reasonable part of the Amazon forest). His farms are located both in Mato Grosso and in Amazonas (the state where the Amazon forest has its greatest coverage). There are a lot of farmers like him, they take down the trees, sell the woods and then plant soy on the cleaned area.
Brazilian government is actually proud to be in the head at a time when Brazil is exporting soy (and others commodities) as hell. Brazil is not the only guilt though. The buyers (mainly from Europe) should reject soy that was planted on former forest's territory, cattle (meat) created on former forest's territory, etc.
PSDB is his party and stands for Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (Brazilian Social Democracy Party), and MG is the state he representes and stands for Minas Gerais.
Nonetheless, there is no party fidelity in Brazil and the politicians keep changing from one party to another one, so this doesn't represent anything at all. Indeed, this Senator is really insane (and probably corrupted).
He is indeed free to make his on choices on whatever kind of software he wants to use, this *IS* freedom after all. The problem is that he always seemed to advocate for FOSS because of it freedom and openness, and now it looks like he changed his point. It doesn't look he is interested in freedom more than he is to grab a bigger market share (obviously for commercial interests of the whole community). I think it is this radical new positioning that pisses off some members of our community.
Wouldn't be better to spend this tiny amount of money with measures to prevent and control the emission of CO2 at the atmosphere? This barges things looks like a hack to me... a really expensive hack. Would this have to be done every year? I think it is better to leave this kind of "ultimate" solution to when there is no option at all. Until then, let's try to fight the roots of the problem, not just patch it from the outside and adjourn the disaster for a few years.
Kids are spending too much time in computers...

Chess for Kids?

In my opinion you should try to improve your game and knowledge of the game and then teach/instruct your daughter the way you think is proper. I don't recommend pushing kids into computers to perform tasks they could perform with other kids or with their parents. I'm sure she will be much happier spending her chess time with her father than with a chess computer software.
That said, I also recommend you to try Go with your daughter. I've read it is used in elementary schools in Japan, China and Korea to stimulate the children's mind.
I like fantasy and stuff, but this story is just really poor and really childish. A bunch of fop british kids leading a lion's army in order to defeat an evil ice witch and make Christmas happen again. Please...
Interesting post. This kind of introduction might help beginners (like me) to know more about this new mix of different technologies and avoid confusion. Just these days a friend of mine said to me that he would like to learn this new "Ajax programming language". Many people still think that way. Thumbs up for the article.
I still have some Kodak CDs that I recorded in 1998 and they still work perfectly, both for data and audio. About DVDs, I'm used to buy "LGs" (at least they are labeled LG, but cdrecord says they are SMC Magnetics or so), but I don't know if they are really reliable... I have been using then for about 6 months and they still work, but I don't expect it to last more than 2 years. I'm looking forward to know what others/.ers will say about reliable medias.
Last time I looked the US was the 1st on the list of scientific papers published by countries with more than 60% of the papers. The second position (United Kingdom IIRC) was really far from US in number of papers. It would be nice if not just one big expoend had the control of most scientific efforts, but many nations sharing this "privileged position".
I indeed believe US industry should invest more in research (as all other nations should do, always, no matter what). But it's worthy noting that other nations are growing and maturing too, US can't avoid that. Besides that, this is not a fight. The benefits achieved from researches aims all humanity (at least it should be that way), so it isn't important who is at the top of the list, but it is important to support studies and researches, both in academia and in industry.
I wake up about 5 am to take a pee and when I was walking back to my bed I had the idea to check slashdot just to see what was going on. When I saw the new layout I though: "holy sh*t, am I dreaming? I don't remember changing my broswer settings..." and get back to my bad...
This was posted just 2 days ago. Isn't exactly a dupe, but was really necessary to post this news about LSB? It is implicit that LSB 3.0 was released in that one.
The major applications have tweaks that Sun added to make JDS special. The key productivity applications include StarOffice, Evolution, GIMP, Mozilla and gaim. They compete with Microsoft Office and Outlook, Adobe Photoshop, Internet Explorer and AOL Instant Messenger. You can find versions of these applications in other distributions but Sun's just work better.
Some of my professors have developed a tool to help structual testing. JaBUTi (Java Bytecode Unterstanding and Testing) can test java applications and components even it the original java source code isn't available. It is possible to do the structural test through several approachs, like control-flow (all-nodes, all-edges) and data-flow (all-uses, all-potential-uses).
I have used this tool during some time and it is amazing. It generates graphs of the code you are testing and it can be integrated with junit.
How could you not change the past? The simple fact you can breath in the past will change something in the future. How could one go back to past and avoid changing anything at all? One would just see the "light" emitted in the past, like a movie, without interacting to it?

No joke from Google this year?
Where's the CowboyNeal naked picture? THAT is appealing!
Probably they will hire eskimos to row the barges...
At least they are not planning to use trees to fight global warming.
