By now, hasn't SCO contradicted themselves so many times on so many issues they're estoppeled from any course of action whatsoever?

In a way, i kinda hope not. I would really like to see this go to court. Not only for the satisfaction of seeing SCO get smashed by an elephant, but also to see how the GPL will shake out in the courts. It's only a matter of time before the GPL gets called into court, and down the road there may be other opportunities, but it would really be advantageous to those supporting the GPL (of whom are habitually broke) to have this happen now, with the muscle (and finances) of IBM in our court.

At any other time, the "attrition strategy" of prolonging the court process until the other side is bankrupted might get turned against us.

We all know that even if the GPL is completely rock solid, it can still lose in court depending upon its presentation. And if it *does* lose in court, that could potentially start a firestorm of FUD and abandonment, if not a poor perception of Open Source products (even BSD-license ones.. consider how a PHB thinks). Next thing you know, we'll all be replacing linux/bsd servers with Windows Server 2003 or SUNW at our workplace.

I would hate to see the party crashed just as it was getting started, you know?

  6. Consumer Reports on Are Review Units Better Than Store Versions? · · Score: 3, Informative

Every once in a while i read the Auto comparisons on Consumer Reports to get myself all worked up.

Consumer Reports will not accept donations of vehicles or products from manufacturers or vendors just for this reason. They will discreetly send someone out 'under cover' to go acquire the products in an "off the lot" or "off the shelf" state.

    This is good, and commendable.

However, i see a lot of times they will end up mis-matching the cars and trucks they compare. Usually it is simply a matter of trim levels on similar classed models. This *will* have an impact on the final outcome. Obviously it's difficult to do things *exactly*.

Less often, but still wrongly, they will compare vehicles from incompatible classes- things like Buick Century vs. E-class Mercedes vs. Toyota Camry. Or the classic truck comparisons with the 3/4 ton, V8 powered Dodge and Chevy fullsize trucks, against a V6 F150, against V6 Toyota Tundra and Nissan.

Consumer Reports might do this to other product reviews too, but i only pay attention to their auto ads for `entertainment'.

I guess that no matter what, *any* test can be flawed.

Would that be a good thing? Seriously, i'm not trolling, i'm asking. With all the stink lately about SCO/linux/IBM et al, and other companies embracing open-source projects just to have something go awry legally, i kinda wonder if this Apple/BSD marriage will ever shake out to be a good thing or not. I want it to be good, though.

Even though Apple may develop their own implementation of the same core things, i don't really see what Apple would be able to contribute to BSD that BSD doesn't already have. (excluding their proprietary GUI apps, such as iTunes, iChat, etc... of which in a BSD frame of mind aren't really part of the OS itself, and of which it is quite clear that Apple will not share.)

    Just a question.

  9. I've switched on FreeBSD 4.9 Released · · Score: 3, Insightful

I've used linux for about 4 years, but i have always peeked into the BSD camp now and again.

While i like linux, and it has always done well for me, i think it's time for me to jump the fence to FreeBSD completely.

The BSDs always seem to be more mature and logical, and `cleaner'.

Maybe this isn't the best reason to drive such a decision, but i think a lot of the noise and trolling from the linux camp of late has really put me off. I know *all* linux users aren't like this, but it's really turning into something don't want to be associated with. I have a similar situation with the Apple community, and Windows, well... i just hate the OS enough.

The level of integrity that i've seen in my (albeit limited) interaction on usenet, slashdot and irc with BSD folks is impressive. There aren't any issues of acting juvenile or overly zealous.

Maybe in a while the linux camp will "grow up" some and i'll come back.

    Sorry.
