The same can't be said when grandma opens an e-mail attachment thinking that she's opening an actual e-mail from her 7 y/o grandson. Hell, that scenario even explains away a spammers typical bad grammar and spelling (at least if the subject line isn't sexual in nature...)

The burden should be on the designers of the website, software, OS, etc. whom have the expertise. When lawsuits (however ridiculous the settlements may be) start biting the companies in the bottomline, software will get a lot more secure and a lot more user friendly.

Granted, but it's still got to be a cash grab. After all, Blizzard can support Diablo II with an annual patch/upgrade (chintzy as it is) after 5 yrs. w/o subscription fees, despite apparently abandoning the franchise at Blizzcon. Either they've found a way to make money off it, or (more likely) the expense of maintaining is less than we would think. Subscriptions would only account for the creation of new content (token expense to "plug it in" to the existing game), which doesn't justify charging me the price of the game all over again, several times a year. Sorry, I'll spend my money elsewhere...and so will other casual gamers once the novelty of MMORPG wears off...

M$ loses potential profit equal to GDP of a small country due to pirated Windows copies. They remedy this by increasing the incentives for buying legit copies. If this results in a less secure internet for everyone, this is neither their problem nor their fault (in any direct sense). Joe Average is not going to understand that the internet being slower and/or more unsafe than ever could be blamed on M$ policy, even *if* he cares. By the same token though, I think the new M$ policy will backfire, because Joe Average already is ignorant/indifferent to security concerns and will take the pirated Windows. The smaller % that *are* security conscious might just decide to investigate Linux rather than fork out money for a legit Windows copy. I'm hardly an M$ apologist, but if this were nearly any other company, /.ers would be saying "hey ya gotta do what ya gotta do to protect your investment" and we'd be feeling sorry for their no-win situation. Back on topic, my point is that I'm one of the people who doesn't spend money on tourism like he used to. Unfortunately, the government cites that as proof that I'm still afraid to travel and that they should ratchet up the "security" even tighter.
