any reason why using clear consice names and the operating systems built in file search tool wouldnt work?
Seems like a bunch of work to make things more complicated to me... I keep hearing about ppl with a couple thousand files and have a hard time finding things... ive got 7,000 (60g) songs ripped from my own cds and never have a problem finding any.. why? i used a clear, consistant naming scheme (artist - track number - track name), when i want to find a song, i click on the tools menu, then find file, and search for *keyword* from what im looking for, a few seconds later a list of everything with that keyword shows up.
It seems like everyone is taking the hard route, when all thats needed is to teach the users how to use the find 'feature' of their os.
I do realise there are some corperations with gigs upon gigs upon gigs of data that needs to be searched through, but from what ive gathers on this discussion the people wanting this are the people that pull all 200 pictures off their digital camera to a single directory and leave the original filename, (DSC389290.jpg) if you cant be bothered to change the filename to something readable what makes you think your gonna take the time to fill out the several info fields per picture? Do you think this solutions is going to be able to read your picture and know thats ted drunk at the company new years eve party? No your going to have to fill in some info about it to be able to search for it, in which case you might as well give it a consice filename and be done with it.
I also belive something new and revolutionary is needed in terms of filesystems to make things easier, but i dont feel that slapping a database on its back is the solution. Heck, at some points with really large data sets the db server is going to need to be handled on a seperate machine, talk about a problem waiting to happen.
FASTLANE TOO? This is just rediculas, fox has dropped pretty much all their good shows in favor of "reality" tv, whos the genius behind this choice?
Lets see if i got this right, FOX's primtime lineup runs from 7-9 central monday through friday, and the only non reality tv shows are Boston Public, (was a good show, last season completly sucked) The OC (ive watched the first three episodes, wasnt impressed), skin (romeo and juliet the series), and of course, 24 (my favorite show, seasons one and two both kicked ass, there should be no doubt that the first was better though)... 3 * 5 = 15 hours and of those 1-2 hours are worth watching.... great, i used to watch nothing but fox's primetime lineups but as theyve cut everything but "anything-but-reality" shows im gonna have to find another station to leave my tv on, ive noticed ive been leaving the sci-fi channel on more and more....
I guess youve never used oog as your main claims to how its a clone is its UI. Find some screenshots, your way off.
Second, the biggest problem with microsoft (as far as office goes) is their need to save just about everything in their own secret little format. I belive this is the main cause of hatred toward office by the slashdot crowd, well other then that whole being made by microsoft deal. I use secret in a sense that they do not document it for others to create 3rd party readers or editors. The first reform step needed in the computing industry are file format standards for "everyone should be able to open" type files. Do away with the XX (how ever many different text document types there are) get rid of all of them (doc, kwd, wp5, etc, etc) and go with one standard, the same goes for spreadsheets and anything else typicly found in an office suit as they tend to be something most people will find themselves needing to use at one point or another.
Also by your theory that oog should be hit with the dmca, i would be totaly screwed and forced to either shell out 300$ for a copy of office, which wouldnt run on my system and force me to also have to purches and install a copy of windows, or fail every single one of the classes im in. The bookstore dosnt offer microsoft products at a discounted rate. So as a student i need to come up with 500$ to read my homework assigments and turn in my homework. I dont know about the other just starting out college students but, i for one, do not have 500$ laying around, actually if i did i would first be giving it up to pay some outstanding hospital bills in which case i would still be screwed. Granted the teacher should have probably did a bit more homework on document types, as there/are/ different grades (plain text rich text full blown document) of document type, and picked out one that was a bit more subtable, plain text would have done the trick. But theyve decided on word docs and there is nothing i can do about it other then use oog to read and save these types of documents.
This is slashdots previous artical on producing diamonds IRC: Yes diamonds have been able to be man-made for quite some time but like you said only usefull for drill bits and such, i havnt gotten a chance to RTFA yet, but im fairly sure the way described in the previous slashdot artical is how this one was produced. the artical also goes into a bit more detail about the diamond cartels wanting this stopped.
You compare using a computer to using a tool, you wouldnt just set little timmy free with a table saw, or many other power tools. All it takes is a little common sense and some general knowledge (goes along with common sense really --reading power tool safty tips::reading the error message that "JUST POPPED UP") about the tool to be used properly.
Ive had a lady say to me before, "I bought this computer to do work on, i shouldnt have to know how to use it!" The main problem here is that the genreal public DOSNT feel they should have to know anything about this tool because its a computer, and was made to make our lives easier --so why should we have to know anything about it.
And my little rant:
Were talking the same populous that still refers to our proffesion as "crap" - how often have we heard, "i dont know anything about that computer crap!" Just goes to show the mentality of the average user really... put someone down but still expect them to help you even though you havnt bothered to pick up a few key terms after using this tool for a couple years, by this i mean the people who still dont know what to do if you say "minimize that window". You would that that after using a tool for a givin period of time you would begin to at least understand it a bit better. I know for one that if i were to use a jackhammer at least once a week i would begin to get proficient and understand some of the main problems that would occure and general maintnence and repair. Heck, I know guys that worked at the mill and have been phased out but because they worked on certain machines that have been automated that the company has to call them in for 2k a day to repair it when it goes haywire. But change the machinery to a computer and they dont seem to appear to even soak in any part of how to use it, let alone make an active attempt to learn anything.
... verzion is the only telco (providing rsidential and as far as i know commercial dsl) in northwest indiana, the only thing keeping them from charging more then (my total bills comes to:) 59.99 for 768/128, is comcasts cable.
The reason my bill isnt less is because the verizon ISP cannot provide any more bandwidth then that of a 56k modem in my area, and even that isnt consistant, some people end up with no bandwidth while others (as close as 3 houses) expeirence full speed.
Ive known people to get verzion as their ISP get terrible bandwidth, cancel their account completly (line and isp) and resign up (line and isp) then get full speed.
maybe I should start doing some reasearch and see what the costs, permits, etc that would be incurred to put a wireless antenna on the watertower thats basicly in my backyard.
CON: Distribution channel for vital, for-cost add-ons such as Java virtual machine and Flash Player remains unclear; on the desktop, lacks range of application availability enjoyed by Windows.
Please correct me if im wrong but the Red Hat Enterprise releases are ment to be used in the server environments, I couldnt see but a very few cases were a workstation might need an enterprise version.
Assumming im correct its statements like this that really get to me -- CON: Distribution channel for vital, for-cost add-ons such as Java virtual machine and Flash Player remains unclear; on the desktop, lacks range of application availability enjoyed by Windows.
As a server it dosnt NEED this range of application, i would wager that if theres some kind of strange deamon you need that linux dosnt have available, windows definatly wont have one available.
i'd be nice to do that, but I keep most of my systems behind a firewall so they can't use Windows Update...Its also a bandwidth hog.
Thats why MS has coperate updating: you basicly run the windows update server on one of your own servers. It gets one (1) copy of each patch, and provides the fix to your internal machines.
Even if you couldnt do the above for whatever reason, useing some bandwidth is not a valid excuse to not keep your software up to date.
Ive gathered that these are more of mockups then the actuall screenshots, providing more information on these mockups is something that just about EVERYONE should do during this phase. Need an opensource/linux/whatever example? http://slicker.sf.net take a look at the mock screenshots.
IMO the slicker UI (maybe not slicker but the tabbed style of handleing windows) will be the future of the desktop.
Well i counldnt asnwer that one... But i belive ive seen some of those key chains actually called a 'microvault' but yeah your right it should be listed with the rest of the drives as a removable storage device...
>>Yes, that last paragraph was an insult to the parents obvious troll-paragraph. I run a SuSE server and an XP box. Both have been up the same length of time without a crash.
Again the parent was talking about mission critical proccess, none of which are taking place on that xp box.
I would rather train a group of monkeys to manually type out replys from an http request then trust it to iis on windows xp. Unfortunatly the monkeys worms are a lot more disgusting...
I thought the exact same thing, there are some pretty nifty features being shown here. I for one think the dynamic mixer is a great idea.
I was watching some shows and needed to adjust the volumes (two: the master vol, and the wave vol.) in the mixer, and the media player, so that it didnt crackle but the adjustments i ended up with to get rid of the crackle was so odd that when someone would sign off or on aim, or an email would arrive i feared for the safty of my speakers...
aww damn, i saw the parent and this reply was below my threshold, and to my absolute amazment your reply was even _worse_ then an amd heat related joke!

not yet ;)
In the next city over they used thier water tower as the main wireless point, I figured we could do the same.

Its more this part that gets to me:
lacks range of application availability enjoyed by Windows.
To a non-techinal PHB this translates to 'it cant do as much as windows so it cant possibly be as good'.
