But NOAA is part of the federal government, and FEMA doesn't typically issue hurricane warnings. I'm not defending FEMA's poor performance with Katrina, but the disaster didn't happen in New Orleans for lack of a warning. This is what the NWS issued on Sunday morning (changed to lower case to avoid the slashdot lameness filter):
urgent - weather message national weather service new orleans la 1011 am cdt sun aug 28 2005 devastating damage expected
hurricane katrina a most powerful hurricane with unprecedented strength...rivaling the intensity of hurricane camille of 1969.
most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks...perhaps longer. at least one half of well constructed homes will have roof and wall failure. all gabled roofs will fail...leaving those homes severely damaged or destroyed.
the majority of industrial buildings will become non functional. partial to complete wall and roof failure is expected. all wood framed low rising apartment buildings will be destroyed. concrete block low rise apartments will sustain major damage...including some wall and roof failure.
high rise office and apartment buildings will sway dangerously...a few to the point of total collapse. all windows will blow out.
airborne debris will be widespread...and may include heavy items such as household appliances and even light vehicles. sport utility vehicles and light trucks will be moved. the blown debris will create additional destruction. persons...pets...and livestock exposed to the winds will face certain death if struck.
power outages will last for weeks...as most power poles will be down and transformers destroyed. water shortages will make human suffering incredible by modern standards.
the vast majority of native trees will be snapped or uprooted. only the heartiest will remain standing...but be totally defoliated. few crops will remain. livestock left exposed to the winds will be killed.
an inland hurricane wind warning is issued when sustained winds near hurricane force...or frequent gusts at or above hurricane force...are certain within the next 12 to 24 hours.
once tropical storm and hurricane force winds onset...do not venture outside!
Sounds like
NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards
Established infrastructure, works, and isn't that expensive for the end user.
But that is the rub -- people have to buy a compatible radio. If there were
any kind of demand, that could be cheaply added to clock radios, TVs, etc.
Wow, I wished spamassassin worked that well for me. Mind you, it does get rid of most of the junk, but I still get a fair amount of spam that slips past SA. Every few days, I'll even get spam that has a score of exactly 0!
Your computing cycles are really your own -- you've paid for the electricity, it's not like you're siphoning it for free
Well, yes and no. The environmental cost is paid by everyone. I encourage you to not waste electricity on SETI@home, as much as I'd like to talk to ET.
I don't know what your budget is, but computers have become a commodity
It is a pretty popular response here to tell him to get his own computer. Keep in mind, getting a computer also means he needs space to keep the computer (and it has to be reasonably secure so it doesn't get ripped off), electricity to keep it going, and an interweb connection thingy so he can get at his pr0n^Wemail. The connection can get a little pricey, and it is an on-going expense.
Now, maybe he is in a dorm room where the space, electricity and an ethernet drop is all included in his room fees. But then again, that might be part of the reason why he doesn't have a computer yet.
Since you can't really get privacy on a public computer, my suggestion is something that the average slashdotter would never think of recommending. Get a girlfriend with a computer. Make sure the computer has enough disk space for two.
Ozzie success with Lotus Notes speaks strongly to his qualifications. Why, he single-handedly gave IBM's share of the email market to Microsoft by making a product that was much worse than Exchange and Outlook. After helping Microsoft all these years he deserves to get a paycheck from them.
Flamebait? Helloooooo. You see, the Yankees are a baseball team, and calling his post a football joke presents self-disparaging humor at my inability to even recognize the correct sport, let alone his subtle dig at the Red Sox.
Slashdot should have some minimum standards for moderators.
Uhmmm.... Last I checked the Yankees are alive and doing fine. In fact they lead the American League East, 1 game over some team from Boston.
Look OctoberSky, this is a technology news site, not a sports news site. So you can take your little football jokes somewhere else where they will appreciate them.
And as for looking up a particular rule... C'mon, admit it folks - you have the rulebooks all but memorized, and just need to check whether half-ogre gets a 15% or 20% racial modifier to damage with a double-handed flail...
It is only 10%! Oh, hold on, the moon is Waning Gibbous tonight. Never mind, 15% is correct.
A trojan/virus/etc. that disables regedit and the task manager - and monkeys with files.
I don't see any reference in the article to monkeying with files. What we need is an old-time, NUKE THE DATA, REFORMAT THE DRIVE, Come-To-Jesus worm! People who don't take security seriously won't have a computer anymore, and the rest of us won't have to deal with as much spam spewing from those zombie hordes.
Note: I am not advocating writing a destructive virus, or any virus for that matter.
Indeed, one can only speculate how much subversive activity would result from outlawing CVS.
No, he really has a point here. Pass a law forcing Botnet developers to use SourceSafe and you'll see Botnet development slow to a crawl.
You betcha, the National Weather Service did an excellent job. (For confirmation, see this timeline.)
I don't think having another warning from cellphones would have made much difference.

I just follow our established company standard for estimating projects. The boss tells me how long it is going to take, and I say "Yes Sir!"

Urgent Note to the BSA: I'm just kidding. You know, a joke. Really just a joke. Please don't send the black helicopters.
Being a publisher, they should have known to use a spell checker.
How did you know it was a porn file?? Now I have to TRIPLE encrypt it!
Pass the lager.
Oh no! That means that "jigabyte" is actually the preferred pronunciation of "gigabyte".
Oh, and if you'll excuse me:
Good Lord no! Please don't use spammers for harvesting organs! Burn them completely, it is the only safe way. Then sprinkle Holy Water on the ashes.
If they don't learn to think outside of the box profits will be paper thin. They are really going to get creased by the competition.
I always feared that project would fold.

But where can I purchase a Debian license? I've been trying to buy one, but no one will sell me one.
I'm glad I never let my spreadsheets grow to over 99 cells!
