    As a customer, I'm the one who decides what I want and what I need. Of course, the bank can choose not to meet my wants or needs, and I can choose to find another bank.

    I'm tired of the trend where companies only know how to do things according to a narrow script.

    A vote for Acme (which would have otherwise certainly gone to Emacs), is like a vote for vi! It is a well known fact that vi supporters have been secretly throwing Acme parties around the world.

    First of all, most companies like to do business the way they are used to doing business. So coming up with a retainer system where it isn't already being used isn't going to fly. Secondly, most companies want someone 100% (or more) for the period of time that they want them.

    Smaller companies might be more interested in an arrangement that would give them access to talent on a part-time basis. Larger companies might do that too if you have some unusual skill.

    And I think it works like this: the spammers sell spamming services to companies who think spam is a good way to sell services. As long as the spammers can sell services to somebody (even if doesn't work very well), there will be spam.

    Hint to spammers: You don't actually have to send out the spam, just say you do and pocket the money. Everyone will be happier. (Including your clients who mostly get a blackeye and aggrevation out of your services.)

    This sounds like the news story about candidates stealing each other's signs. I don't think attacking a web site or taking down a sign will have much influence on the election, but I find the attempt disturbing.

    It's the same idea as with MS reading my hotmail account's email: sure, they COULD, but out of their tens (hundreds?) of thousands of accounts, why yours?

    Well, in my case, it would be worth Microsoft's time to read email from my hotmail account. I, unlike most people, get many unique offers:

    • Prestigious university University degrees at a discount
    • Great mortgage offers
    • Numerous software packages at reduced prices
    • Some rather personal services and medications
    • And an offer from Nigeria that is going to make me rich!

    Exactly, I don't know why this got any news coverage. It isn't as if IBM sent a letter to customers telling them not to install SP2; they just want to control configuration problems internally. They don't need Lotus Notes to go belly-up in half the corporation because folks didn't wait for the patch to be tested on their intranet.

    Just because they were in a mosque doesn't make them innocent. The part about "...fired on US troops.." makes them sound like legitimate targets to me.

    Allow me to note a problem that the non-ham geeks will care about. Those cool atomic clock watches and gadgets? They don't really have an atomic clock in them. They work by getting radio signals from WWV. If you have BPL in your neighborhood, you can say goodbye to those clocks.

    Of course, there are always sundials...
