Bozo spammer, who specializes in sending spam to just AOL as far as I can tell, sends spam to AOL addresses with my domain name in the header as the sender. AOL bounces bad addresses to me. (AOL also bounces all the spam to me when they figure out it is a spam run.)
Very annoying, both from all the bounces, and from some sleaze using my good name.
However, now AOL checks for SPF info in my DNS record. Hmmm.... mail from some_bogus_name@goodguydomain.com isn't coming from a server listed as valid for goodguydomain.com. (It is coming from some hacked cable user's PC.)
AOL cuts off the spam before reading any further, and everyone (except the scummy spammer) is happy. AOL doesn't process the mail, the AOL user doesn't see the junk, and I don't get any bounces.
The spammer's mail server can be registered in many SPF records, but there is no way it will be in the DNS record for my domain, because I control that.
I've had trouble with spammers doing small runs with my domain name on AOL. Since I've set up SPF, I haven't had a single bounce from AOL-bound spam. It might just be luck, but as far as I can tell, SPF is helping.
Agreed. I was aware of the misconception, but schizophreia is commonly linked to MPD in humor. Truth be told, I shouldn't be making be making light of other people's disorders, but the voice in my ear forced me.
But the situation suggested was the ISP's mail server was "screwed", which means it isn't suitable to use as a smarthost. The ISP's server might be blacklisted so other hosts block all mail coming from it, or it might just be unreliable or slow. A number of ISPs block outgoing port 25. Have you noticed a decrease in the amount of spam?
We've been lucky that these recent worms/viruses that have been basically harmless. (Heck, some here might argue that targeting windowsupdate.com was a good thing!) There has been a lot of side effects that have made them annoying, but no really nasty payloads that destroy people's data. I hope we learn some lessons before a truly evil worm is unleashed.
But this is SCO, so the fact that Bruce used the same alphabet as SCO in his report is probably grounds enough for them.
My Deity! You are right!!
His website is http://perens.com/
And he announced "Open Source" to the world!
SCO so owns him now! I, for one, welcome our new copyright owners with open arms! As a slashdot contributor, I can help turn in others who dare use Linux and the letters "S" "C" and "O" without a proper license!
Hey, security through obscurity works for me! No one knows my email address, so I don't get any mail. No viruses here, no siree! It does get a little lonely though. Sniff.
We should put this forum to good use and help out those poor pople in the NE.
Exactly. Look, what you do is this: Everyone should connect wires directly from your nearest AC outlet to your cable modem, and then post a reply to this comment with a subject line of "POWER FOR NE". Wait about 5 minutes so the comment can get fully charged with electricity, and the select "Subject". Important note: do *not* press "Preview", as that would waste all the power. Then disconnect the wires from your AC outlet. Slashdot readers in the NE can then read the replies to this comment to power up their PCs.
Look, we all know this is just a temporary solution, since the next worm will target the new web site. Microsoft has planned ahead with a series of newwebsites that should be able to handle any future problems.
You must be new here. Don't you know there are 10 types of people on slashdot: those who RTFA, and those who comment. If you read, you don't have time for a witty comment.
the computers 10 years from now will be almost fast enough to run the antivirus software scans and updates to protect themselves from the worms and viruses. Hopefully there might be a cycle or two left over for the Windows XXXP 2010 updates.
Receipts are easy to destroy. How do you get rid of old credit cards -- the pieces of plastic? They are very tough and will probably last 500 years in the dump. When a credit card expires, the number doesn't change, and you've got a pretty good idea of when the new expiration date would be for the new card.
Yes, as mattdm points out, this does work.

People with Multiple Personality Disorder can't have schizophrenia?
Well, I am, and so am I. Based on a sample size of 1, I'd say 200%
Is it certified 3 Laws Safe? If so, no worries.
This is what I get:
C:\WINNT\system32>uname -a
'uname' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

The interference is on the receiving end.

Certainly the game is rigged. Don't let that stop you; if you don't bet you can't win.

Why do you assume that spammers aren't also unix using geeks?
You missed the part about spammers having sex, didn't you?
Debian works well and the price is right! Wonderful install procedure too.

Excuse me, but what is this job you held in 2003? CHO??
Oh, that was just a step below CIO.
Oh, very impressive indeed!

Aha!
This whole outage is obviously the latest clever ploy by the fishy pair, Gill and Nemo.
What are we doing tonight Gill?
Same thing we do every night Nemo, escape to the Ocean!
