  1. Re:What about XP sales? on Vista Sales Rate Fell Last Quarter · · Score: 1

I turned UAC off after using Vista for about an hour and I have had no driver issues. Of course, this is on a computer I just built with all Vista-compatible hardware, so take that for what it's worth.

As I said, I didn't have a very good opinion of XP. I uninstalled it on computers that had it and installed Win2000, which was basically the same OS without the Fisher-Price look and other sillyness. To be fair, Vista comes with a bunch of crap getting in the way of the user actually interacting with the computer (in the name of user-friendlyness), but after turning it off (which I'm sure could be done with XP also), it's fine.

Disclaimer: I am not a fan of Microsoft in any way and prefer Linux as an OS. My below post is being unbiased and discussing Vista purely as a mainstream, consumer OS.

    Ahem.

Except it's not crappy. It's a perfectly fine Windows OS. It's better than XP in every way I can think of.

The problem, I think, is that it doesn't really have anything to get people who are content with XP to upgrade. That combined with all the FUD about Vista makes for poor sales. I got it because I built a new machine, mainly for gaming. My old machine still had Win2000 on it as I wasn't a fan of XP. Now it has Slackware.

I think the "consoleized" complaint refers more to game design or gameplay. I hate traditionally PC games being consoleized, but I didn't really notice it much in Bioshock. At least nothing jumped out at me, as opposed to Oblivion.

I don't get why Halo is a big deal on Slashdot. I think it's the most overrated series ever. To me, it seems that if it were originally a PC FPS, it would be considered completely mediocre. The only thing I see that makes it popular is that it's a decent FPS on a console.

Are there really that many Halo fanboys on Slashdot? I would imagine there would be many PC gamers here that would be aware of much better FPSs than Halo.

Just like downloading a cracked version of a game you bought that you can't play because of screwy copy protection isn't unethical. They still get the money for the game and you get to play what you paid for.

Is it written in the policies somewhere about changing the OS voiding a warranty? If so, I don't see how you have any case.

I'm not saying it's not dumb for them to refuse to fix it, because it is, but it bugs me when people bring "rights" into something like this (unless UK laws are truly bizarre and I'm just not aware of it).

So people misunderstanding a phrase due to a lack of education--which is then copied by other ignorant people--is a perfectly good way for a language to evolve?

Just because something is common doesn't make it right. A lot of people think "it's" means "belonging to it". Should we change the grammar for the possessive of "it" because its misuse is such a common grammatical error? A lot of people spell "altar" as "alter". Maybe we should change the spelling for that?

You can't change the standards of the English language or the meanings of phrases to accommodate people who don't use them properly in the first place.

Now what is wrong with music sounding like it was created with software? 10 years ago, that would have been a bad thing, but now many many people do all their music with software. Modern music (sequencers, softsynths, softsamplers, effects) software is very powerful. So by listening to music, you're no longer going to be able to tell if it was created with software or hardware.

Not all sampling is taking a complete part of a song and using it some other track, like Puffy Diddy P Daddy "Vote or Die" Poopy Dumbass Combs. I don't agree with that at all. Taking a sound from a song and reusing it in a way where it doesn't sound like the original song with new lyrics is fine.

Sampling is just using digital audio as a tool for making music. I have made my own samples for several years now. I used to use loops when I was just starting making electronic music. A sample is nothing more than a piece of digital audio, it does not require taking it from recorded songs.

But yes, I agree that for a bunch of self-styled geeks and nerds, most people here seem to look down on electronic music, despite having a very vague understanding of it.

And then not to mention that not all electronic music is sample-based. With synthesizers, you can make completely original sounds from scratch.

So while I agree with what you're saying, I'm not sure what you're getting at.

Electronic music is not associated with the gay scene at all. Certain kinds may be by people who don't know any better, but there is a hell of a lot more to electronic music than dance music. Associating electronic music with dance music is just as ignorant as associating dance music with the "gay scene". You obviously don't know a whole lot about electronic music if you think it's all disco-based. If you do indeed realize that it's not, please be more specific before you go on a condescending rant about how much more sophisticated and evolved European music is that us Americans just can't seem to understand.

I'm glad disco died out here so that people could invent new and interesting electronic music instead of stuff that's scientifically designed to be danced to. But don't think that noone listens to that stuff here either. There was unfortunately quite a dominant rave scene here for a while and probably still is.
