Americans in general don't know a lot of things. Ask Americans who claim they are conservative what they are trying to conserve? Historically, conservatives have been about preserving the ruling class. Sounds pretty un-American. Here's an interesting site that expands the whole left vs.right argument
You left out the remaining two paragraphs from the section you quoted...
A number of advocates of Taiwan independence argue that the Instrument of Surrender of Japan was merely an armistice, a Modus Vivendi in nature, which served as a temporary or provisional agreement and always would be replaced with a peace treaty afterwards. Thus Instrument of Surrender of Japan did not transfer title of Taiwan. It was when Japan renounced sovereignty of Taiwan in the Treaty of San Francisco in 1951 did the sovereignty of Taiwan return to the people of Taiwan, based on the principle of self-determination provided by the UN Charter. Moreover, some people believe this Treaty made an undetermined cession of Taiwan which put Taiwan sovereignty in trust by the Allied power until today. It makes interpretation of Taiwan's political status more complicated.
Although these interpretations of international law challenged the legitimacy of the Republic of China before the 1990s, the introduction of popular elections in Taiwan means that except for the most extreme Taiwan independence supporters, supporters of the popular sovereignty theory no longer see a conflict between this theory of sovereignty and the ROC position of the R.O.C. being the sovereign government of Taiwan, Kinmen, Penghu and Matsu. In fact, Chen Shui-bian has often promote the popular sovereignty theory by emphasizing it in his speeches.
Because wikipedia is written with a western poitn of view, I would tend to believe it's more of an unbiased source...
Taiwan's argument that it is a sovereign nation is legitimate. They have had free elections with multiple candidates from multiple parties with differing views. That's about as democratic as you can get. If unifying with China is a good idea, the people of Taiwan will freely choose to do so.
In addition to keeping its own provinces in line, China would probably like to control Taiwan's wealth, which in the end is what justifies political conflict2002 GDP and 2003 GNP
China is trying to veil its posturing behind historical significance. But, I doubt this is fooling any astute diplomat who understands the history. Maybe we should ask Americans and Australians if they want to get back with England?

Saying that modern China has a legitimate claim to Taiwan is like saying France has a legitimate claim to the Louisiana Territory, or that Russia still has a claim to Alaska, or that the USA still has a legitimate claim to the Phillipines. If there is any country with a "legitimate" claim to Taiwan, it would be Japan.
Even though China proper hasn't cared about Taiwan since before its last dynasty ended, it's now using Taiwan as leverage to keep its other provinces in line. A broken China would be an economic disaster similar to that of Russia/USSR. While there's a lot of posturing, any aggression by China would probably not be looked favorably by the rest of the world.

Misery loves company. There's a bunch of miserable people out there who have been painted into a corner with arbitrary morals. These so called truths that they have been led to believe have clouded their idea of what freedom and liberty is. If others disagree with their belief system, even though such disagreement doesn't affect their own belief system, then it has become imperative for them to have the non-believers legislated against. I think what it boils down to is most people simply are not capable of critical thinking. As a whole, we're a more literate species, but somehow I don't think we're really any more enlightened.
Sounds like he needs to start using tmda or some challenge response system. Seems like that would be cheaper than having a whole team filter your email, unless that team is outsourced.
Actually, there isn't. One of the definitions of philosophy is "the pursuit of wisdom." How do you know what is wisdom without considering arguments that you may not agree with? Is wisdom only arguments you agree with?
Actually, my philosophy professor in undergrad said the best time to teach philosophy is to kids. That's when their minds are like sponges, absorbing any information it can. That's the time when they are asking the most basic of questions, why? If they don't have the critical thinking training early on, chances are good that they'll simply conform to a comfortable clique as they get older. It's too bad that our teachers and most parents really aren't prepared to challenge the minds of young kids. Critical thinking is really difficult. You have to consider that the opposing viewpoint may be correct. For a lot of people, the idea that there may be a world beyond the blinders they wear literally sickens them. Ignorance is bliss...
I've listened to tube amps for sound reproduction, and they have a very mellow sound. The best way I can describe it is like a soft focus for visuals. Most of the info is there, but distorted just enough to give you a soothing sensation. Solid state has much better response and is more crisp.
In response to the original poster, the biggest effect on performance is a properly designed crossover to match the frequency response of the drivers. Eigenvalue problem, anyone? Put the drivers in a nice sturdy box. Since the box will vibrate to some extent anyway, maybe consider using a more musical material. Then have a nice amp to drive them.

Despite the projection by conservatives that the media is liberal, the purpose of the media seems to be more of conserving the status quo, especially with the way mainstream media outlets are owned by a few corporations.
OTOH, if blogs want to be more of a legitimate source, then it must take constructive criticism and improve. A story on MarketPlace suggests a candidate may emerge from the internet realm. In order for something like this to happen, bloggers must improve and accept criticism.
It's chronic in this industry. I'm amazed at the ability of incompetent IT managers to unzip, pull out cock, and insert into mouth in one fluid motion. As Jerry Seinfeld would probably say, "How do these people get promoted? Where do they come from?" One theory is incompetence is promoted to reduce the damage they do. It may be time to move on to something else.
The problem being solved is that there is very little substantial difference between the two parties in an electoral process dominated by two parties. If you don't believe that the Democrats and Republicans agree on more issues than they disagree, then you've been watching too much Fox News.
Your faith in the electoral college is rather naive. In this day and age, who are the "elite" and who are the "masses"? The system works for the corrupt two party, authoritarian state that we are fast becoming. It doesn't work for a representative democracy that we claim to be.
What's the voter turnout? Less than 50%? There are probably more people who are too lazy to vote, believe their vote doesn't matter, and fruitlessly vote for a candidate they truly believe in than there are those who blindly vote for one of the two parties they disagree with less.
So, if you're into arguing that Democrats are always right and Republicans are always wrong, or vice versa, then yes, the system works. But, if you agree with the Democracts 10% of the time, Republicans 10% of the time, and some other party 80% of the time, then the system does not work.
There isn't a level playing field because of government policies that help protect those who are in power and have influence. If you want a level playing field, reduce the influence of government in all aspects (social and economical).
The US Govt. could have fought Microsoft's monopoly by pressing this issue instead of the useless court battles. The government is probably one of Microsoft's largest customers. If the government had told Microsoft it would only buy software that used standardized file formats, I'm sure Microsoft would have complied in a hurry. But, as usual, the government only knows how to waste money, and in the end, the lawyers get rich, and Microsoft still has a monopoly.
No shit, Sherlock. That's what management types like Dubya likes. That is American corporate culture.

The KMT was about as brutal as any other authoritarian regime throughout history. As my friend says, "All people suck, all the time." No group has moral authority.

It's a cushy job in the USA since most IT managers have neither IT nor management expererience...
