Well, that analogy is the same as the people who wont fasten a seatbelt. Why would they? They never had a crash! Until they do, and they die.
Because it hasn't happened yet, doesn't mean it wont.
That's called "prevention".
ps. If you could be without service "for a few days", then you are not the kind of person too worried about working, or its not critical for your business operations.
Try to run it on Windows 98 and lets see if you can... You wont of course, but what will you say? Ohh of course! its not VMWare fault, its Windows! I need a new version... and go running to buy the new 2000/Xp/Whatever.
As the version you are installing is old and unsupported for that particular version of Linux, you should buy the new one if you expect it to work. Stop crying because its Linux, and face the reality, the fault here its in VMwares field, not Linux.
I plan to make sure that *some* of them get to *know*.
It would be good if everyone actually told his/her friends and relatives about this kind of things, nobody likes to be imposed with restrictions, and that kind of actions in the end lend to one more cent to the Linux camp.
I have a pretty good number of converts in my list, including non-geek people, and this things will only help to increase this list. So... in the end, its a Good Thing (tm).
Anyway, I laugh at people planning to run Windows Vista... Here in Argentina, more than 70% of the PCs wont be able to do it, even if they want to. The other 20%, well, maybe they will run it, but only if they don't have to pay for it, and if their last games run on it. I wont even assume anything on enterprise costumers, as i can't speak for some high profile ones, but most of them, cant even get the management to upgrade the PCs so they are able to install XP (an illegal XP most of the times that is).
I will give the remaining 10% the benefit of the doubt.
Actually i disagree. If this is implemented correctly, then they should force all *legal* porn sites to use an.xxx domain, and thus, allowing filters to work where is the need for such things, but if you want to avoid filters, then you are either one of this options:
1) a minor,
2) an adult on a protected (as in not yours) pc or public place,
3) someone not willing to pay.
Neither of this options fall into the target of legal, credit card or cash based (as in not-publicity-based) porn sites.
So, in my opinion, the actual porn sites would be in the.xxx domain, and wouldnt want to be in.com (always assuming they actually force porn sites to go to.xxx domains trough fines or something like that, as we all know.com is the most popular domain for everything).
I just think that if i had a porn site, i wouldnt care for people with filters, if they have a filter, im quite sure they cant pay the content.
I was thinking the same thing... ever since i read about this. I thought that this patent could be used against any browser with plugins (extensions?) capabilities
Anyway, it occurred to me, that it might be that Mozilla or Opera dont have *by FAR* the money that Microsoft has, or maybe they actually don't care to hurt other browsers or companies, just make the greatest money maker in software to pay its bill for using their 'intelectual property'.
Of course, i dont agree with IP, but i didn't gave them the patent on plugins!
"[...] MS's products need to be stable as MS cater for a huge amount of relatively computer illeterate users who cannot handle change."
Are you trying to say that MS's products are _stable_, as in, run continuosly without crashes? or as in every version has to freeze or corrupt your work, just to keep the tradition??
Also by 'cannot handle change', you mean that if they dont see at least 10 (random) blue screens in a day, they might freak out?
Come on, Windows isnt stable, MS apps arent either, they keep backwards compatibility because its a lock-in feature... "if i use this other product, are you _sure_ i can open _all_ of my _old_ files?", thats the question that keeps MS as the top world supplier of software (even though you could open most of the files with other companies programs).
Im sorry, but im not pro pirate copies, i dont think its a good thing to do, and although most of the times its the only thing to do, its a sad thing.
Here most people NEVER paid windows, when they buy a PC in this places, its usually their first PC and they dont have a copy of windows licenced waiting for them, Windows itself its worth more than the whole PC, you would be surprised of the pirate copies % we have, i dont think i know one single person with a "Authenticate Windows". Not to name Office, Photoshop, Macromedia Studio... etc, etc, etc...
I use Linux, and i do what i can to make other people use it, just because i think is "The right thing to do" (tm).
Thats right, thats what i meant that they share some things with Linspire being a "pay for" Linux distribution, and that they dont GPL the software they develop. Im not talking about community or technical support.
Actually, it isn't that amazing, for the sellers is just reducing costs, and so improving sales, as we all know that cheap sells more.
Anyway, It doesnt really help around, no one will keep the Linux OS, unless they find someone who has it too (so they can share something, at least get some questions answered), they will wipe it out and install a pirate Windows as soon as the kids neighbor brings he's last game, or dad comes with his compay soft. Thats the ugly truth on pre-installed soft, at least here.
Here in Argentina almost all of the electrodomestics and supermarkets chains that commercialise PCs have Linux pre-installed, there is even a local Linux company selling Linux Distributions to these chains (the distribution has much the ways as Linspire, they DO NOT SHARE what they build, they only (ab)use GPL'ed software and build around propietary configuration apps, and give support for the distribution to the final user), this company even implemented a License KEY, just like Windows, so you dont copy the ISO... Which is quite depressing.
Most of the employees tell them to get a technician, format the drive and install a pirate windows, even some of them go do the work as an extra influx of money.
I just think that this kind of things give Linux a bad reputation, they make people believe that its trash and that 'nothing works', so you have to go to windows, which of course they dont pay, because if they actually had to put 1 buck for it, there we would see some massive migrations to Linux.
Yes it is, what do you think? that professors are born knowing how to teach? Nothing replaces experience, a good knowledge about the theory and pedagogy is always a plus, but if the professor doesn't teach, he doesn't learn.
The iTunes software is nicely designed, works well, has a lot of features, and came free with my iPod. Why would I start looking for a v0.1 FOSS replacement for it?
The same reason you use FreeBSD and LAME to encode MP3, instead of using some free-windows-propietary-app for doing it. Because, at some point, it will get better than the original and its free as in beer AND freedom. iTunes is bloated, horribly bloted, you cant run it nicely on a P4 with 256mb and windows xp, with a bit of luck, Songbird will be much better at managing resources.
This is not about web-based IM clients, its about email/IM integration! In the last year or so, there are so many web-based im clients for every protocol out there that no-one cares about a new one, but i DO care about having IM/email integrated, also, although i find it a bit disturbing, i think the search benefits of a google engine in my chat logs are something worth to think about.
ps. By the way, ICQ had this loooong before MSN did, i used it around 1999. You can find it here: http://go.icq.com/ It used to be a Java app. now they have that as secondary (another option) and a Flash version as primary.
The difference is that, IE is a propietary application, from a company that is known for not caring about its security issues until they get public so they _must_ fix them, and even this way, there are times when they dont fix it either.
Bittorrent is open source, free software, libre, so you dont need to "force" fixes... usually fill a form at a bugtracker and you are set, if its dangerous enough, you might get a very fast answer, if not, the next version will fix it.
Thats not true.
Back in that time you had a dropdown box next to your username with two options: @hotmail.com and @msn.com. I dont remember for sure since when they allow non-hotmail/msn addresses but the thing is, they started allowing other mail accounts when they replaced the dropdown box for an automatic completition to @hotmail.com if you pressed TAB after writing your username (otherwise, you had to write your whole address, just like now, even with @hotmail.com ones).
I would say this wasnt available at least until 2003 and maybe 04.
Actually, they are getting a benefit. The publicity one, and i believe its one of the best benefits you can get.
If you have people talking about iPod, Apple and Samsung, they are all getting free publicity AND if they actually do this, the marketing department will have some work too, as the: "longer battery life, no moving parts and smaller space" at the same price point will mean more people will be interested. (Also, i would think that smaller space might mean --after some time-- a smaller production cost, less materials).
who sayd im not afraid? crap. Im tyred of all that shit and paranoia!
For the subway, i use a magnetic card that records every time/date/station i go trough, when i go to buy something, i use a credit card or a debit card, when im on internet, i leave posts, messages, commentaries, most of the times under the same nick.
We are already without "privacy", the thing is some people still dont get it, but we live in an interconnected world, and you cant help corporations getting every data they want from you just crying!
As there are no sources info, if this is all fluff they should have sayd it, this kind of rumors usually benefit one of them, and i dont think the other would be happy to loose some share points, because of a fluff they didnt take out.
I mean, if they actually refused to comment on the topic, something has to be going on... unless the "refused to comment" means no one asked...
thats exactly my question... if there is not going to be any development improvement (more developers, or full time paid ones, or whatever), and there wont be any end-user changes (like say, a "pro" paid version), then, whats the porpouse?
Like you said, i just hope they use the money wisely.
Small glitch, as in 22 out of 200 students affected on a data migration to Google's free service.
Actually, they were 2000. RTFA.
Most probably, it means there are laws regarding "Unsatisfactory service". D'oh.

No, they dont supply one.
But there is a third party implementation using their (MS) development tools:
http://www.fs-driver.org/
I can!
;)
Age of Empires! (Yes, the video game).
As far as I'm concerned, they didn't develop it (that's maybe why it was such a good game), but, they did took care of the hype
Here, have a look at the website: http://www.microsoft.com/games/empires/

SUSE does this, and they include quite a compilation of propiertary codecs, like realplayer and mp3.
