I bought my N800 to use mainly as a book reader and I must say its been awesome. Crisp, big, and high resolution screen, perfect for reading. I'm using one of many free software addons called fbreader for reading ebooks.
Instantly working bluetooth data connections with most carriers (I was amazed how easy it was to setup - select your carrier, turn on bluetooth on your mobile and off you go, instead of windows where you have to know setting XX ZZ and YY before you have a chance of getting connected through your mobile phone).
Wifi with as good a range as my Thinkpad T60p.
The ability to surf the web easily on a display that's *readable* everywhere you want to.
Way better battery performance than my PDA which features a screen half the size...
Did I mention it runs linux? You can run VNC, ssh etc. on it and install these apps with just a few clicks... VNC actually works quite decent (over WIFI, it blows using bluetooth, mainly due to bandwidth limitation).
Avoid OpenWRT at all costs unless you really REALLY need something from OpenWRT that HyperWRT Thibor or DD-WRT is not offering.
After having a stable well working WRT54G for more than 2 years I decided to try out OpenWRT (last month) and totally bricked my WRT54G.... Oh it would boot and I would be able to connect to it using telnet, but that was it... no commands were working, I could not upload a new image using tftp (I tried from linux, windows xp, mac os X using a variety of clients, at least 20 times on each OS...) due to.. well, my guess is that OpenWRT had disabled the tftp server heh.
Anyway, bought a new WRT54GL and, being a bit wiser this time installed HypwerWRT Thibor (from http://www.thibor.co.uk/) since I needed a few of the features not found in the Linksys firmware.
Works like a charm, no problems at all *AND* it even has the tftp server enabled by default (I tested it by trying out DD-WRT afterwards, but went back to HyperWRT Thibor).
Will Dell PCs with linux be cheaper than the SAME model with windows or will everyone still be eligible for the Microsoft tax? If there is no price decrease on models bearing linux this is all a hoax, then you're paying for something you're not getting (windows) and still lining the pockets of Microsoft.
Most likely the price will be the same, because a PC without Windows promotes piracy!!!11 Right.
Eh? I don't get it. So Micro$oft want us to pay them for Winblows even if we don't use it, so we don't get sued? Sounds like Micro$oft wants people who use Linux in their business to obtain a Micro$oft license to do so.
In other words, Micro$oft want us to pay a Micro$oft tax for using something that has nothing to do with them. I got two word for you Bill Gates: Piss off.
Correction: You *thought* you were going to move to SUSE servers. You will in reality be moving to M$ servers, hidden behind the SUSE name. So yeah, you will have *really* good interoperability with M$ products... =)
I have never had trouble myself, but I have several friends who had to switch from a yahoo email to a hotmail because they couldn't sign in anymore. Conspiracy theory, paranoid or temp problem with micro$ofts servers, who knows;-).
Also I recall gaim has had problems with non-hotmail email addresses in the past.
Rather I'll say the problem lies in the gaim implementation of the MSN protocol, as the client made by micro$oft functions perfectly (well if you ignore the periodical problems connecting to the service). The MSN protocol is not an open protocol but is reverse engineered.
When I write fast I get a server disconnection error. I've always gotten that using gaim when writing fast. Then again, it might just be the evil empire disliking the fact that I use MSN with a non hotmail email address...
I have just tested the new gaim (2.0 beta4) and there is one annoying thing they have yet to fix: If you send messages using MSN fast they will get refused at the server level by micro$oft. MSN messenger stores your messages and only sends like one per second I seem to recall. Gaim does not have this feature, thus if you are a fast writer or write small messages and send them quickly after one another they will NOT go through.
This bug has been present for ages. I had hoped this would be fixed in 2.0beta4, but no. I hope this is fixed in the final version! Other than that gaim 2.0 seems very cool!
Using ctrl-w requires you to move your hand away from the mouse - yeah I know, if you use the mouse with your right hand this isn't a problem, but you try hitting CTRL-W with your right hand without using your left hand and you'll see what I'm talking about. I use the mouse with my left hand - continually switching from mouse to keyboard to hit ctrl-w while surfing just plain sucks.
I just want the possibility of having pre 2.0 tab behavior, that shouldn't be too much to ask.
and each tab will now have a close tab button.and each tab will now have a close tab button.
I seriously hope they have changed the preferences this time so that is easy to change back to the pre 2.0 behavior (its doable but its quite a hassle - using about::config to enter a new option that does not exist is not really that user friendly).
God, having to move your mouse to close a multitude of windows just UBER sucks.. the last beta I couldn't even change the behavior to full pre 2.0 behavior - when I had less windows than what filled the horisontal screensize, the closing button would be at the right end of the tabs, not at the right end of the entire firefox window.. talk about sucky inconsistent user interface.
Sure is always tragic when someone dies and in lilo's case I'm sure its a great loss as I have the feeling he did do great things and meant well.
On the other hand I can now finally remove my lilo ignore on freenode as he won't be able to do those nasty irritating broadcasts (or whatever they are called) again.
OK, one of the things I've always loved about the tabs in firefox was changed!
Normally in Firefox, in order to close tabs you have to click the red cross at the far right, where this STAYS no matter how many tabs you have.
Now in beta 2.0 this have changed. The closing cross is now located in EVERY damn tab, meaning that if I want to close a bunch of tabs I now have to MOVE the mouse for each one! WTF! Talk about lack of usability. This is exactly the same lameness seen in Konquror and Opera and one of the main reasons I do NOT use these browsers but prefer Firefox.
I couldn't agree more. Trying to tie usability and gnome together is like saying oil mixes well with water...
Gnome usability makes me puke, this socalled "linux desktop" does not remotely do what anyone would want a desktop shell to do - hence when we are talking about gnome, we should talk about useless instead of usability.. *sighs*.
KDE now, here we have a consistent user interface, usability is high and you can actually get it to function as you would like - heck, this even goes a long way for Windows (XP) as well.
So yeah, lets talk usability in terms of KDE or windows or whatever else, but definitely NOT gnome.
There are still large gaps in each chromosome, either due to repetitive sequences, high GC content or closeness to the centromere - basically saying that the human genome is finally done is like saying that 99.9% equals 100%, which it doesn't.
This is especially important in cases where you actually NEED to use sequence in areas where it has not been assembled correctly or has not been sequenced... which has happend to me multiple times during the last couple of years... oh and those places in the genome have been unfinished ever since the first installment appeared publicly... they are even lacking in the Celera version of the genome...
Finished my ass!

"The article takes a look at some of the bloggers who are fighting for their rights and how."
Now, what exactly are those rights? I believe the only right you have in a state which is currently under the rule of Sharia ("Islamic law") is the right to remain *OBEDIENT* at all times.
This whole blogging business doesn't seem very obedient to me... so exactly what rights are they fighting for? A change of religion?:D
I work with stuff like this on a daily basis (post doc level) and everyone in biomedical research knows to be highly suspicious of everything that has to do with immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. It all comes down to your negative and positive controls - as you can get a very strong signal with more antibody / less washing / longer incubation on a negative control and only a slight signal on a positive sample with less antibody / more washing / shorter incubation....
When reading research papers containing these images / results you need to trust the research team doing it... its so easy to falsify and way too easy to misread if you mess up your experiment slightly. Also different protocols in different labs will give different results.
But yeah, lets put obvious and well known stuff on the frontpage of/.:-)
Could we like.. stop the idiotic use of Coral cache links?
Not everyone and their mother has a firewall that can connect outbound to port 8090. Now get coral cache running on port 80 and it would be no problem.. but posting links with port 8090 is just.. lame. No, I can't correct this problem myself as I am not a system administrator at this place, nor is the blocking of anything besides a few ports ever going to go away in this place.
I suspect I'm not the only one annoyed by those links.. *grumbles*
"Everytime I hit Cntr-T and see a blank screen I think Im in Word."
WTF? I absolutely hate the fact that you duplicate a page in IE when you "open a new page", that's quite insane! If I open up a new page I want new content.. quite simple.
Also the fact that doing CTRL-T makes the cursor appear in the area you type the url is absolute magic... CTRL-T write name of webpage, enter, CTRL-T name of new page, enter, CTRL-T etc.
