I talk in past tense, as in what would have been if KDE had been chosen and not Gnome, but nevermind:-).
Choice is fine, but choice will most likely never make linux "win" the desktop "war" - or make it even become a contender. Which is my opinion, yours may differ.
You forgot the millions of people agreeing with me. My gripe is with the wasted amount of money/time going into something I think will fail in the end.
That means Microsoft and Apple will win and that bothers me a lot.
Its perfectly fine, I never expected everyone to have my opinion (it is after all *my* opinion:-).
You on the other hand is wrong when you insert KDE instead of Gnome.
The Ubuntu foundation has poured WAY more man hours and development time and polishing into Gnome than it has ever poured into KDE.
That you choose to enter Mandriva instead of Ubuntu is... well, your choice, but the present discussion is about Ubuntu, and frankly I don't see Mandriva as a contender for the Linux desktop at the moment.
I've used windows since 3.1 (and even tried Vista heh) and used OS X for some time as well.
I've also been using Linux for more than 10 years, trying all kind of different window managers.
The one that was the most unusable, the most annoying, the most illogical one I ever tried, was Gnome (and believe me, I've tried... I've really tried to like Gnome, tried it multiple times, both in Debian and in several releases of Ubuntu. After several weeks, sometimes a few months, I just get fed up and install KDE instead).
Yes, I feel annoyed when the best bet on bringing Linux to the desktop in my eyes are wasting their time and development funding on crap.
I say this as a *USER* of said software, *NOT* as a developer.
I really WANT to like Gnome, but no matter what I do I end up hating it after a while.
The fact that *I* believe this means Ubuntu will fail on the desktop aggravates me to no end.
Gnome is dysfunctional, limits my options, looks like shit (well, that can be themed, but...) and just generally sucks.
If KDE had been chosen instead and as much time had been spent on polishing KDE as Ubuntu has spent on polishing Gnome, we would not have this discussion.... Ubuntu (i.e. Kubuntu) would already rule the desktop.
Sadly, I see more and more development time wasted on supporting / trying to polish Gnome into something functional instead of just throwing the towel into the ring and going with KDE.
Yup, summary is wrong. Apparently the poster has not followed prion research at all during the last 20 years or so;-).
Why else would BSE (British Standard of Excellence or eh... that other abbreviation;-) infected meat be banned from stores? If there was no proof of prions being able to jump species we could just eat it...
I have a Mac mini with a Core 2 Duo 2.0 GHz CPU.... I have not had any problems playing any 1080p x264 mkv movies what so ever (as long as the mkv file is error free that is!).
This is on Ubuntu 8.4 using mplayer with the CoreAVC codec.
Basically the parent is wrong.... and he needs to check his software setup. Most likely those specs are for non CoreAVC mplayer and/or VLC (and VLC truly SUCK playing 1080p x264 files...)
When apple makes a phone that will actually FIT into my pants pocket without making my pocket bulge like I'm some kind of loser having my wallet in there..... THEN I'll buy the iPhone.
For now, its simply too friggin wide! and then I haven't even gotten into the whole "no keys" thingie....;-)
Seriously, I had the exact same concerns recently, however I refuse to listen to the insane noise usually coming from an 1U rack..
I bought a cheap mac mini (intel core solo) on ebay, gutted it, replaced the CPU, added 2 GB RAM and a 250 GB drive.. I then put an external 250 GB drive on top of it. Alternatively buy a brand new Mac mini with the specs you need.
There you go - $600 or so and you have a totally silent "home server".
The fact that someone lost their stuff is tough luck.
Then again, CI Host could just as well have terminated their account for _NO REASON_ and taken their money instead. That's also theft - and something CI Host has been known to do (yup, it happend to me, I'm a very annoyed EX-customer of this shitty company).
Morale: Don't use CI Host. They either steal your money or let your equipment be stolen.
Did I mention they never returned any emails I sent them? Neither did they return any phone calls.
Crap company. Use another hosting company... if you're using CI Host I recommend that you switch NOW, before it's too late.
I couldn't agree more that you should not follow stuff like this blindly. However, the more links his howto recieves.. the higher the google rating the more likely people will stumble upon it without realizing it was posted on slashdot;-).
I guess we will never see a slashdot frontpage story about the guy who followed the directions in this howto and lost all his files and wasted a lot of time.
All I'm saying is if you write a howto about this AND it gets posted to slashdot AND ends up on the fronpage, you better be damn good because people will follow this blindly and who knows what he forgot this time around...
As I stated above, had this not been on the frontpage I couldn't have cared less.
I will never claim to be perfect, but when a howto makes the _frontpage of slashdot_ I assume the person who wrote it knows what he is talking about.
Judging by his mistake with the fsck he forgot the last time I sure as hell hope people don't just blindly follow his directions this time. God knows what he might have missed this time around.
Had it not made the frontpage and/or had been buried in askslashdot I couldn't have cared less.
I somehow forgot to do filesystem-checks on the 'virtual' encrypted filesystem and exactly there were a lot of errors to repair (and that caused the machine to hang and/or go back to the debugger even when copying to it). So, as a lesson, if the shit really hit the fan and your machine acts up like mine did (for the first time in 2+ years), make sure you also fsck the svnd0c (in my case).
I mean seriously, the guy just now realized he should fsck his encrypted volume.... I would trust his howto as far as I could throw it. Why the hell did this make the slashdot frontpage? *sighs*
A lot of owners of core duo laptops with x1400 or any other 1000 series ATI Radeon graphics cards has similar problems... except here its windows mediaplayer causing the problem.
Open up a webpage with an embedded wmv in internet explorer (yes, I usually use firefox, but rarely need to see something using IE) and half the time I get a BSOD claiming my RAM is faulty... funny how it only happens when using windows mediaplayer / IE. Apparently its a video driver problem.. or so people think.
Defective by design? Yup. Cause? Windows or ATI? I really don't give a shit, it just shouldn't happen.

New law proposal - 3 strikes and you're out... nice.
Fuck off from our national laws!

I fully agree. While I have never used Google browser sync I have used Foxmarks for quite some time with no hassle at all.

I second that! Avast seems superior to AVG in my opinion (and I've used AVG for years, just recently switched to Avast)
Most likely not as silent. The mac mini is surprisingly silent compared to all laptops I've ever used.

The way I see it, the reason Wii is winning the race is because so far its the only new console with a working mod chip solution.
The moment the mod chip community finds out how to make a mod chip and copy games for the PS3 or the 360, sales will begin to rise.
Amen to that.
I agree, I looked at the specs myself and immediately singled out:
Additional Software
CyberLink PowerDVD Suite
Norton Internet Security(TM) 2007 (90-day subscription included)
Norton Internet "Security". In my opinion you would have to search hard for worse crap ware.

eew, and I just posted the above as "code", so much for being perfect ;-)
Yeah, he made a few mistakes the last time.
What mistakes did he make this time?
I guess we will never see a slashdot frontpage story about the guy who followed the directions in this howto and lost all his files and wasted a lot of time.

Want something really photoshop like I'd recommend gimpshop http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294 instead.
Or maybe try out paint.net? http://www.getpaint.net/

Yup, those are some nice tools to have at your disposal as well, however I mentioned the ones I had tried myself :-).
I have yet to try and watch movies on the N800, I'm not sure if it can play "fullsize xvids" (e.g. 600+ pixels width), perhaps someone else knows.
