I just got a Sony Ericsson k790a this week and it allows me sync with outlook and it will transfer anything I want with the included software. For the transfers I have the option of using bluetooth, infrared or the included usb cable. The only crippling thing I have found so far is I can't set an mp3 as a ringtone unless I download it from Rogers. Although I have heard of ways to get around that. One of the interesting features is I can use the phone to control media player or slideshows on my computer over bluetooth. There are phones that allow you to do some of the things promised but from what I've heard a lot of the time you have to unbrand or unlock the phone before you can do anything with it.

Whether or not there is an upgrade to allow Dave to work straight off the phone who knows, but I bet an application can be written and used to interact with DAVE when it comes out. So to answer your questions yes I believe they will allow you to fill a 20 GB harddrive with whatever you want off your computer, I really don't think they want people downloading 20 GB worth of crap over the air. As for the second question I have PDA-like software that syncs my phone with my PC.

  9. Re:Lying with numbers on Why Palm Still Covets Palm OS · · Score: 1

The problem with Palm memory management and a lot of other things with their API is that it is not standard. You have to go Char * temp = MemPtrNew(StrLen()); to create then MemPtrFree(temp); and if your dealing with creating a pointer from a handle depending on where you get the handle you might have to create it then lock it then create the pointer then unlock it when your not using it once your done with it you lock it free the pointer the free the handle. Its not a terrible situation its just not standard at all. For memory management you can use standard c style of char * temp = new char[]; and delete [] temp. But sometimes you have issues with it so you just don't. That brings me to another point where I have Char for the first example isn't a typo, they actually recommend that you use all their macros for all the types so you never actually use char you use Char, Int32 for int and so on and so forth.
After saying all that I don't hate development on Palm it just has a lot, and I mean a lot, of quirks for things that are standard everywhere else. It is almost like they chose to ignore standards and just do things their way.

If all fiction is unable to be patented it while not stifling innovation it would hamper development, who would want to invent a warp drive that would cost some very large amount of money to develop if as soon as they were done anyone was able to copy the design because a patent was unavailable to them. There are many other examples. I think this should fall under the so obvious that it doesn't deserve to be patentable rather than to change the rules and say that if it has been designed in fiction you can't get a patent.

I would guess that it may be some sort of rotating thing where you have three groups of employees the first has to be there during week one the second during week two and the third during week three with almost normal scheduling rules applying to each group during their week. Almost normal meaning that you aren't going to schedule quite enough people but almost enough. If it isn't your week to work then you can come in if you want to work. There are some obvious flaws to this plan, like everyone is going to want to work the busy times and no one is going to want to work the slow times, you could implement a no more than X employees working in a department at a time based upon the expected busyness of that department at that time.

GC.Collect() is the proper method to attempt to force garbage collection in .NET, however, MSDN has something very interesting to say about that particular method.

Use this method to attempt to reclaim all memory that is inaccessible. However, the Collect method does not guarantee that all inaccessible memory is reclaimed. All objects, regardless of how long they have been in memory, are considered for collection; however, objects that are referenced in managed code are not collected. Use this method to force the system to attempt to reclaim the maximum amount of available memory. I always get a little scared when I read language like "attempts" and "does not guarantee" in MSDN. Sorry about the previous rants, Garbage Collection is something that occasionally bothers me just a little bit.

Yeah there are a couple other problems with the garbage collection in the CLR that I have found, haven't had them explained to me yet but when I've written apps that consume large amounts of memory and objects very quickly GB/minute or more, the garbage collection seems to fall apart and the application never gets rid of the memory you've used. I'm still not willing to entirely say that this wasn't a programming error but after ensuring that all references had been set to null all threads had been terminated and their references set to null amongst other things I still had the same amount of memory leaking. I had multiple peers review the application and they all agreed there was nothing more to do. There were no objects pointing to each other in the application either. Interestingly enough I was asked if there was a solution to this problem during a job interview a little while ago because they had been fighting with it for a long time too. The only solution I have ever come up with for this problem was to not use a garbage collector and use a language where you control memory allocation and deallocation.

This wasn't really on topic at all but you mentioned the GC not working in a situation and that brought my rant to mind. Maybe someone actually does know the solution to the problem though if so I would be really interested in hearing it.
