  1. Re:That's just plain stupid on Has Google Redefined Beta? · · Score: 1

You're entirely right about the "pay for premium" though. Google needs to drop the stupid beta word, and pick something that's more representative of what the product is. I'd choose something more like a "lifestage" kind of label. Toddler, teenage, adult, mature, senior, elderly would be good starts.

That is a good idea but I can't think of a word that would clearly express what they do to the general public that they can be clearly attach to each product that will never be "released". Take the lifestage model as an example google mail geriatric or google finance toddler. Those names are no where near as clear as the word beta, which I take to mean not finished yet but usable by people who probably aren't developers. It is the definition of usable that may be in play here not the definition of the entire word.

disclaimer: I skimmed the article so I'm not really sure what they are claiming the difference in definition is.

I don't have an opinion one way or another on global warming/cooling and don't want to make one based on the reports I have read. The reports all seem to say we are all going to die, but on the way to death there is no way to tell whether or not I'm right so basically I need more money so I can continue to tell you we are going to die. Sounds like a good gig to me.

When I was a tech in a lab the prof running the lab told me that most of the time when there was some barrier that no one could cross in the nano-tech field IBM would throw a ton of money at it and solve the problem. So it is nice to see they are still working on solving problems and advancing the field.

That is what all of the "superstars" in my company can do. I'm fairly certain most reasonable definitions of superstar have very little do to with actual amount of code written and more to do with quality of code and what I like to call the WTF factor (where people say, "WTF, I worked on that for hours and couldn't get it working" or "WTF, you can do that").

I highly doubt that there will be any lawsuits because of this. If someone were to bring a suit against Microsoft for banning them for having a modded console Microsoft would slap them with a DMCA circumvention suit immediately, it would work in Britain and the US for sure. As for false positives I bet that the reason they have taken a year in waiting to ban the modded consoles is that they have taken the time to test against consoles that they themselves have modded in order to be absolutely sure. I didn't hear of any first generation unmodified xboxes being banned from Live for being modded.

Last generation it was worth modding the xbox as you could then use tunneling software to play multiplayer games but I don't know if there is anything like that available for the 360 yet, which in my opinion makes modding the 360 not worth it. I think it is going to take quite a bit for me to mod my 360. Someone would have to build a Live like server to distribute updates using some sort of tunneling software and try to distribute updates that way. I think that they would still need to actually change the dashboard first, which as to my knowledge has not happened yet.
