That's what I was wondering. As a shareholder, doesn't he have the responsibility to do what's best for the company? As an exagerated example, can Bill Gates buy up 49% of Red Hat and then deliberatly fuck up the company? My guess is no, and if Jack starts making negative public comments about a company he's a shareholder off, the others will go after him.
I have a feeling that this has to do witht he fact that some people are getting almost $1000 on ebay selling thse things. Some people probably just bought them so that they could turn around and sell them before xmas when everyone will be in a mad rush to find one.
I agree. I was only commenting on the GGPs suggestion to offload on EBay.
They allege Jack has no facts and they provide no facts to back that up.
Isn't the burden of proof on the accuser? Jack is making a bunch of crazy assertions without any creditable evidence to support them. The reviewers are just pointing that out--and their facts are available: just read his book.
I wonder where this idea comes from, since we've started lapping it up like ice cream. Is there any historical precedence in the US or other countries where the government is so obsessed with "the children" being exposed to anything that might be considered harmful or innapropriate?
It's as old as the first society.
Socrates argued that new technology corrupted youth: "The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
and then he was executed under the rallying cry of "think of the children!"
If you don't like it - write up a new license claiming responsibility for whatever it is your software may do. Write whatever software you want.
That's fine with me. Just release all you software patents into public domain so I don't have to worry about you sueing me for not buying your software in which you take no responsibility for.
I think you need to work on your analytical reading skills. Where in my
post did I assert that all IP protection is bad? I did assert that most of it is not in
the best interest of society, but only those that want a larger return on their profits, i.e., "the shareholders".
Failure to do so will mean a radically stifled economy and an end to economic growth.
One would also think that laying off your employees and opting for the cheap labor over seas would also stifle economic growth, But that's a different issue.
Are you some kind of moron? Let me spell it out for you.
I guess I do need to spell it out for you. Are you not aware of all the zany proposed laws going through parliament right now? Seems to be an everyday front-pager here at Slashdot. Are you not aware of all the bogus patents that are granted? It seems to be
about every other day that Amazon/Microsoft/Apple/Intel/ and so on get a patent on some simple and obvious concept.
Are you not aware that the mega corporations are pushing to eliminate fair use
laws? Do you not realize that their treating consumers as criminals before they even have a chance to do something wrong.
Some kind of world-wide IP system is absolutely vital to the continued growth of the world economy.
Agreed. Unfortunately the negative effects of the current IP system far outweigh
the positives and thus should be fixed before we (the U.S.) try to push it onto
the rest of the world. I think only a moron would support and try to
expand a broken system before fixing it... or maybe fixing it isn't part
of the plan...
I wonder how long it'll be before they start getting sued by people and companies when the software misidentifies something legitimate and winds up disabling computers...
For the EULA: "Software is thus provided 'AS IS' and 'WITH ALL FAULTS'."
The president has a two term limit. All other federal positions should have one, too. A four term limit as a member of the House, Senate or both, and Supream Court Judiciary's should be appointed for only 10 years.
Former presidents continue to receive a salary after their term, do other members of congress or the courts? They shouldn't. After your term, you need to return to society and live with the laws you created.
A system where any donation from any person or business to anyone even remotely related to a political party would be considered corruption and therefore illegal. No lobbying, no campaign sponsoring, absolutely no side incomes whatsoever to any politicians from a business, regardless of what reason. For political information to reach the voters at all, government funded campaigns would have to be made for all political parties of a certain dignity. These campaigns would be cheap and more or less equal in size.
How about this instead:
candidates receive a fixed and equal amount of money from government fundings.
All other fundings must come anonymously from the pockets of actual persons; no corporations, no charities, no churches, and no "all other unspecified groups."
All smear campaigns paid for by any person or group must be presented in full context. None of this half quoting; conveniently forgetting; "dramatization, may not have happened" bullshit. The ad must also provide an easily accesible source for all facts related to the issue raised.
A fan of metal music for example would be attracted to metal-specialized online music shops and use them to discover and buy new music.
Well, just sorting by genre at least. I already do that on purevolume and myspace. I pick the genre and the state and go. I've ordered CDs from a few 'garage' bands that I just found by chance. What they need next is a way to mod up the good bands.
I pretty much agree, but I think the marketing would still cause problems. The online shop won't do the marketing for free. So do they set the price low enough that the average person can afford to get there music heard--with the side effect being that the market gets flooded with crap. Or do they make it so high that you end up need someone with money to cherry pick the good stuff--side effect being that the one with the money (record label) will start pumping out flavor-of-the-week's again.
I think a self-adjusting system would be best; something based on votes or downloads. Of course as I write this I see a problem, a great band from Podunk, Mississippi will have a smaller audiance than the mediocre band from L.A., thus less votes and they go unheard.
Unfortunately, all USB Mass Storage (include cameras, card-readers etc) devices have the "USB Pen" icon shown.
I don't think it's a bug. USB has a class for cameras and other imaging devices, but some manufactures use the Mass Storage class so the files can be manipulated the same as any hard drive.
Also, I don't think there's a way to determine that a camera defined as an MSD is actually a camera--nothing in the device descriptor indicates what specific type of device it is. I suppose they (Linux/KDE or whoever) could put the Device ID of known cameras in a look up table and check that way.
While I don't mind cutting out the middleman, I think this stinks for the artist. Let the artists set up their own websites and accept a payment equivalent to their royalty. Let's kick out the guys that say who will and will not release music.
I definetly see the RIAA and the major labels going the way of the dodo. My former band recorded in a friends home studio and the quality was just as good as a professional studio. As for distribution, there's a bunch of sites like pureVolume.com and myspace.com and as you suggested, their own website. Of course, this would mean an end to the rock star life... which would be a good thing since only the passionate musicians would stick around.
There's an explosion of new music out there, some of which we may not appreciate, that is just waiting for the opportunity to get listened to.
I think an iTunes style service that catered towards unknown bands would be good way to get their music out there.
What if I want to talk on the phone and listen to music at the same time? Or talk and take a picture? Merging different technology onto one device is convienent for carrying, but not for using.
You get them interested by getting them to create their own games. That's how my college professor did it. We created half-assed cheasy little games. But in the process learned the basics of simulation, object oriented programming, algorithms and managing a software project.
How much hand-holding did your professor do? Did you actually make a game from scratch or just rewrite a few lines of the professors code? I went to school with a guy that had the same attitude as the grandparent post described. For 3.5 years all he talked about was going to grad school for game making. For his Senior Seminar, he tried to make a clone of Gorilla's (the old QBasic game) using OpenGL. Our professor tried explaining the desing concepts you descriped, but wasn't going to do the project himself. Needless to say, the guy didn't get the game finished. And now he's no longer interested in making games and isn't even going to grad school now.
I think the average American will happily take on a challenging task, but the moment a stumbling block comes up, our short attention span kicks in and we watch tv instead.
So an alternative interpretation for this Biblical allegory is that God put the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, not to test man, but to see man realize their Free Will through disobeying him and attaining the knowledge to make moral judgements themselves. The way we prove that we truly are faithful to God is then to exercise our own best judgement to arrive at the same decisions that God would have wanted us to make, without God actually commanding us to do so.
Beautiful! Couldn't agree more.
Of course, there's still the problem of God being omniscient. God defined sin, stated the punishment, and then created me knowing full well that I would not repent and thus, would have to suffer. This contradicts His being omnibenevolent.
I think God's next step would be to remove his presence from our lives entirely. There is no sin, there is no punishment, just an unknown ends through an unknown means and we all have to find the path on our own.
God gave mankind the gift of free will so that they could use that free will to obey him and thus show that they loved him as much as he loved them. After all, he did love them enough to give them life. That *one* tree that they were not to eat from was the *only* law that they had. They were perfect, and as such they would make no mistakes. They *chose* to disobey God. They decided they did not want to submit to Gods authority. That one tree was the only way that they had to prove that they were faithful to God. Without it, there would have been no opportunity to do so. They failed.
But god is omniscient. He knew Adam and Eve were going to break the rule before he made it. Likewise, god knew I would think he was BS, but nevertheless, created me. It seems I was damned even before my existence. Some free will.
...a sad commentary on the state of programming departments in the States
Not that this'll sound any better, but when I was in the contest, I could usually solve all the problems with brute force... but there's a time limit and my programs couldn't make it. The read problem was not knowing how to do the math to make it faster.
The ACM problem sets. I don't know when the current problems get added, but all the old ones, plus more, are on this site. You can write the program, then submit it to their online judge to see if it's correct.
Brute force usually doesn't work, so you need to know the right algorithm. It's tough, but it's fun!

And I'm going to sue Bill Gates b/c of these. They've been haunting my dreams for a while now!
You had me going up to the point about Microsoft having ideas of their own. ;-)
