Exactly, I don't see Firefox advertising for Outlook or something, they're only telling you to use Thunderbird, Sunbird and all those other Mozilla programs. What makes it any different?
Personally, I don't really check. If the contributor says they've written it themselves then I believe it. If you can't trust the people you work with your project is doomed anyway.
Also, if you don't write code to something controversial (think encryption and similar technologies) then you won't get into problems so fast. And if some of the code would be copyrighted, then all they have to do is prove it and I'll remove it:)
It all depends on your definition of "fun". You can play a lot of games with ease, kde alone features games like Fleur II, Bricks, Raeumen, Neuner, Spooky Shooter, Sheep, Megami and a lot more. Those games are considered "fun" so what is your point really?
Exactly, Linux isn't bad, it's just not what _you_ want.
For me it's the exact opposite, every time I work on a Windows machine I just feel restricted, I can't move around as fast, everything takes more time to do... So is Linux now better then Windows? No it isn't, it's different, it is superior at some points, it's inferior at some other points. Neither is perfect, just keep in mind that the world doesn't revolve around you, your opinion is just one of billions;)
And if you really don't want to RTFA and still want to rip a website, try this command (that is, if you have wget installed) "wget -m http://www.server.com/"
A partially better alternative is httrack, it has more features but also tends to be less table;)
I hope you'll forgive me for posting so much code (well, it's slashdot after all), but something like that can be very useful, here's another example on how to separate your code and your variables easily.
Get a thinkpad, IBM also has high-resolution screens, I have a 15" thinkpad with 1600x1200 on it and there are also widescreen versions available with 1920x1200. If apple would have a screen like that _and_ a trackpoint then it might be able to replace a thinkpad for me, until that time, it's IBM for me:)
For me the extensions are the only selling point in Firefox, without extensions it's just too simple, Opera beats every part of it. With extensions there are atleast a few points which are better with FF.
@AusIV: I know FF extensions are maintained an created by there creators, not the FF developers, but it's still a shame that a lot of developers haven't updated there extensions.
Everyone should know by now that extensions often take a few weeks to get updated. The extension mechanism can be annoying when there's a major update but it's like that so that extension authors are encouraged to test their extensions with new versions.
Why should they take a few weeks to get updated? Firefox 2 has been beta for months and available for a long time in general, why couldn't they modify the extensions _before_ the release? It's not that hard... I do have to agree that FF (yes I know you have to call it Fx but that's just stupid) is a bit bare boned without extensions (or should I say add-ons?) and could have a little more functionality, but I do find FF 2.0 a lot better than 1.5 if it's about features, there are actually a few features that are pretty good. Altough I have to say that I'll never use the automatic spell checker (I hate stuff that gives me red letters without asking for it) since I switch languages too often (also, I'm a happy Opera user). But the tab features are actually pretty good, they've finally copied a few of those nifty possibilities from Opera, makes it a lot better to use:)
I detect a little bit of frustration in your post, what driver have you written? For me it was a webcam driver and yes, I did have to update it _every_ point release, right now I've just stopped updating the kernel and just give it security patches, seems easyer for me.
Failing isn't always fatal, imho Microsoft failed with Windows too, but that didn't bring them down. Apple failed with bringing there computers to the common people.
Read the title again, "Why Apple Failed in the 90s"... and you are talking about the MacBookPro?
Apple _did_ fail in the 90s, they were going for the designers and not the 'normal people', luckily for them they've found out that it doesn't really work like that.
Yes it can, when you download a file from the server then the server stores it in the logs, if you visit the page again then the server can check if the file was already downloaded (304 headers) so it should be possible, but it would definately be difficult.
Not just the startup sound, but all of the sounds, like I want to hear if I click my mouse, my mouse can make that sound on its own, and I don't need a sound every time one of those alert buttons pop up, they are on top anyway so I'll see them, right?
But then again, with OSX it isn't possible to disable the startup sound either (or so I've heard) so if people would make a fuss about this, then why not continue at apple?
What do you mean "Ads on the clothing could be used to reduce the price so people actually wear it..."
Have you seen clothes lately? Everything has brands (imho advertisements) on it, sometimes even _very_ big logo's with slogans and everything.
For example, look at your monitor, do you see the brand on it? Or you keyboard, mouse, whatever, everything is branded these days, so all of it is already advertisement.
Just throw everything into the vomit comet and watch the results ;)

Good idea, then I'll get the "Engrish" patent

Besides that, slashdot also has a pretty effective spamfilter (I've seen some users get busted by the spamfilter too though)
Don't worry, I've added itsnotatrap to compensate :)

'The eggs: some eggs'

'Everything in spam: eggs, beans'
Who says it's intentional? Perhaps someone just parked his Dell laptop there (those 20" laptops are heavy you know!).

We already have something like that, right?
It's called a universal translator

They invented BugMeNot for that ;)
