...is it possible for the powers that be (Taco and Co.) to revoke/delete stories in Slash? When stories like this crop up (third time on the page, or some other 'Homer') it never seems like they try to actually rectify the situation by removing the post. Instead it stays. Very rarely ever updated to reflect an error of any kind.
While I do find it annoying to see this story grace the page yet again, I'll live. I understand it's probably timothy's first viewing of it, and that's fine, but once the error has been pointed out...how's about retracting it?
It might help improve reader opinion to at least acknowlege a screw up, rather than ignore it.
(Was the article updated while writing this? Let's find out.:))
Note that my post merely said that just because an engine is old, doesn't mean the game written using it will suck. I'm not advocating that we stick with the Q2 engine because it's "good enough", I'm merely protesting the "I've got a Voodoo 6 in my 1 Ghz Athlon, and if this game doesn't make it crawl then it's outdated and therefore sucks" train of thought. This immediate dismissal of games because they don't contain the latest and greatest under the hood is shallow in the extreme. It's like these rabid techno-freaks who won't even go NEAR a VCR anymore and treat it like some sort of diseased animal ever since they got their DVD player. The DVD might look a little better and have lots of neat toys, but goddamn...now the VCR that was "good enough" for 20+ years suddenly has herpes.
You're joking right? Engines don't make the game. The content does. This "eww it's not cutting edge!" whining crap from modern gamers is getting pretty old. Quakeworld Team Fortress, even with the threat of cheating, is still more entertaining to, not just myself, but to a GREAT MANY people despite having a 4+ year old engine. There are people who, god forbid, still enjoy playing Doom on a LAN with their buddies. Nevermind the myriad of folks who enjoy a fun game of Super Mario now and then using the NESticle emulator now and then. While flashy effects and slick textures make for good show, if you get bored of it quickly because the game is no fun, then what's the point? It will ALWAYS be the content that matters. Wether Daikatana has this or not...remains to be seen.;P

I was never a fan of rap. Classic rock, oldies, classical music, modern rock, metal, etc. That was my musical world. I'd never have even considered giving Public Enemy a listening. But when they had those MP3's on their site waaaay back, I decided to grab a couple and listen for fun. That's when I realized how much ass this group really kicks. Powerful lyrics, an awesome sound -- I'd for the first time found myself really enjoying music that, if it weren't for free MP3's, I'd never have given a chance.:}
Think long and hard about what is possible at public libraries. You'll be suprised how many people read a book without actually paying for them.

Couldn't he have picked ANOTHER name for this book? We already have a book called "Hackers" (what keeps this particular book from stepping on it's toes is the fact that it's full title is "Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution".)
But still, that's pretty lame to me. Have some friggin consideration for one of the best books on subject available to both people outside the culture, and inside. (Yes, I'm aware of it's inaccuracies, but H:HOTCR is still a damned good read.)
Apologies for the flamage, but this pisses me off.
Given how suprisingly clueless the courts are, couldn't someone simply implement the algoritm from scratch again? It'd do the same thing, but it "wouldn't be DeCSS". It would be a shame to have to descend down to the mentality of these illiterate morons, but apparently this is the game we have to play. Despite how it seems, we're THE PUBLIC. When we're doing something that is THE RIGHT THING, and our court system fails...something has to give. What ever happened to people being in control of their country? THE PEOPLE. We're in the right on this! This shit pisses me off. This case PROVES the courts are incapable of dealing with modern technology (i.e. anything after 1970, apparently). Something has to be done...

You know, it's a shame Nintendo's Gameboy/Advance won't be using the TM3120. Can you imagine a 400Mhz Z80-compatable processor?:}
Anyways...I'm eagerly awaiting to find out what lucky company will be the first out of the gate with a handheld gaming device based on a Crusoe processor once prices on the devices come down.
But really, all I want is a portable MAME-playing handheld.:)
Now, I _LOVE_ the Simpsons, don't misunderstand me, but MY favorite animated series was The Critic. I've never laughed as hard, or as much in one sitting as I have during most of the episodes they made. To see it tossed around like Homers plutonium from ABC, then to Fox, then to it's final resting place on Comedy Central really broke my heart. Luckly, I've got six hours of it on tape which I often put on in the background when I'm working. I miss that show...
I've checked both cygnus.com and cygnussolutions.com (not knowing which to check), and found absolutely nothing about this. Anyone know the correct link, if any?:)
Even if it doesn't send OUT data, they would probably still say that. Nintendo is too old and out of touch with good things like this. Perhaps some day they'll think with their minds, instead of their lawyers.
Since I don't have cable, I can't vouch for CBS nor NBC, but ABC is also doing an all day/night broadcast. They've had all sorts of nifty things. Most bizzare being Java.:o
Especially if they think that there's some hot market in converting the nasty RealAudio lossy sound to MP3. (Ever encode a JPEG into a JPEG two times in a row?) Hardly 'piracy', especially since I've got to have the file locally to convert it. What's the difference between playing it to death in their own player, or playing it in WinAmp or whatnot?
Unless, of course, there's something they're hiding about their player, where it's important we play our streams in it...
And why assume that "copywritten" material will be converted? Just recently I used the program in question to convert a copy of the War of the Worlds radio broadcast for a friend.
I'm sick to goddamn death of people pulling shit like this all the time now. I'll refrain from 'expressing' myself more on this, lest I spew more anger. >:P
Understood. I fear source lost to the sands of time. Kinda tragic. Nice to know even decades from now, we'll still have code for Quake, Descent1/2, Wolf3D, etc. (however antiquated by then).:)
I've spent all night and morning curled up around the Quake source...I'm about to pass out. Oof.:o
Thanks for asking about it. I emailed Joe Siegler about it a couple months ago, but I think it got lost somewhere along the way.;)
Exactly. Given all the shit they do for US, it's a slap in the face to treat them like this. It's fine to grumble a bit and try to steer them right, but holy crap -- mentioning LAWSUITS? Boycotting the company? This sort of theatrical overreaction is getting old. ID isn't Microsoft. ID has gained a lot of trust among the gaming community for many reasons. A misguided, but well intentioned slip like this is QUITE forgivable. I'm rather embarassed by the behavior of people here on/. and elsewhere.:P
