Emphasis mine. That is the crux of the matter. To even get a FREE app, one needs an iTunes account, which needs, yes you guessed it, a credit card (or some form of payment means)

Psion is a British Company, most likely they woudl have sent a polite letter/email/phone call to Intel at the start of this fiasco, asking if they can avoid using the term.

When that received no response, came the C&D letters, etc and then finally the lawsuit.

Taking into account Psions relationship with Symbian, all this legal process after the polite letter, could have taken time. Lawyers can be a little slow.

Although what you said is true, you have exaggerated the effects.

I have one of the castrated PS3's, but for me, backwards compatibility was not an issue, as I didnt have PS2 games in the first place. I had PSone games, which are supported nicely on even the latest PS3s.

I also ended up with the 20gb HD, instead of the 40GB/60GB HD, but arguably even 40GB was not enough, and I replaced it with a 120GB HD, from my laptop, which I replaced with a 300GB. The new PS3s come with 80Gb.

Removing the ps2 compatibility reduced the energy footprint of the PS3, as did the new processors they are using. A definite plus, for a system that was switched on more and more for things other than just a Games Console.

I can see why those with a library of ps2 games would be annoyed, but then they could use their existing PS2s

  15. Re:Call him Monkey Boy all you want on Sony Makes It Hard To Develop For the PS3 On Purpose · · Score: 1, Redundant

I agree fully with your sentiments.

When I was looking to by a games system over a year, and although the PS3 had less games at the time than the 360, I chose the PS3 for the following reasons.

    - Although I did have an Original Xbox, I had no reason to play the 2 games I had on it.

    - HDMI, Hard Disk already built in, no need at that point to buy any extra peripherals, other than the second controller. 360 at the time only had HDMI, HD, & wireless on the Elite.

    - Hard Disk easily user upgradeable via SATA 2.5 drives. I later replaced my laptop's hard Disk with a new larger one, and put that disk into the PS3 120GB of storage. 360 requires a proprietary HD.

    - Blu Ray/DVD upscaling Playback, DivX/XviD upscaling playback, Web Browser, DNLA. These things EASILY justified the extra expense of the PS3, enough said. The 360 simply did not have all that, and required an add-on for HD-DVD. The 360 had Media Player Extender, but only really worked well with Windows Media Player, and not any DNLA server, such as my N95. Plus its built in DivX/XviD support was better. Add to it the BD-Bluetooth remote, it became a lot better.

    - Standard USB ports. Plug in a USB Drive, or a USB HArd Disk, and access anything on the drive. Add a normal USB keyboard, no problem. Need more ports? Just use a standard USB hub.

    - Bluetooth. Controllers/remote control uses Bluetooth, reduced profileration of wireless standards (already have bluetooth/wireless/DECT phones in my household, dont want yet another standard to play with). On top of that, can attach a normal Bluetooth headset for audio/mic, a bluetooth keyboard or mouse for input (works well). Even supports a Microsoft Bluetooth Entertainment keyboard with a built in mouse.

    - PSP integration.

    - PlayTV, very cost effective (£50) Freeview Tuner. Allows me to watch free to air Digital Broadcasts, record using the HD, whilst watching another/timeshifting (two tuners built into the PlayTV). Easily Transfer recorded programs to the PSP.

    - Firmware updates keep adding features.

    - Linux (though This is probably more a novelty due to memory constraints, but does work quite well as a web server, etc).

  16. Re:The downside... on Sony To Unveil New Fuel-Cell Prototype · · Score: 1

Its funny you should mention it, since most new SonyEricsson (arguably more Ericsson, than Sony), are known in the field for being pretty good in terms of media transfers.

Back in the day (pre-SonyEricsson) they used standard Defined file formats (jpg, gif, wbmp, amf, midi, ims) for their media formats and allowed transfer two and from via simple IrDA, or OBEX on Bluetooth devices. Even their "themes" were basically a defined colletions of gifs/png with a XML descriptor, in a tar file renamed to .thm.

This compares strongly with Nokia which used proprietary formats, and required proprietary methods to transfer the media (Logomanager, etc).

They were the first to implement Bluetooth FTP on any phone, support for SVG (tiny profile).

As such they were known as pretty open.

I am aware that some con job operators (Verizon, Vodofaone) crippled the phones, but the phones in their base model didnt have restrictions.

Hate to say this, but probably more "mum's" have msn than any other. I know an uncle who has recently changed to a mac, and wonderes why iChat doesnt support MSN. His very comment was, "I thought this thing works out of the box, yet I need to download MSN Messenger, and why cant I use a webcam?"

Even Ubuntu's default chat app (Pidgeon) supports MSN out of the box.

iTunes have very limited format support and as far as I know you can't let it synchronize the content of a directory without letting it manage a complete library.
What part of "we're not making it just for you, we're making a simple application that your mom can use" don't you understand?

I do NOT buy that is not a useful feature for "mums". You cannot expect "mum's" to just buy every tune wants, or rip of a CD. At one point she will get a tune from someone, maybe even a simple thing like "Grandsons first speech", or "Granddaughter's first play". Dont you think she would want to just "save" it in her documents/music or documents/video folder as she has been taught to, and see it in itunes?

iPhoto don't do adjustments as good as aperture or lightroom and they don't work good with each other / list the adjusted photos of the later ones in iPhoto. It's good enough for browsing saved photos but that's about it.
What part of "we're not making it just for you, we're making a simple application that your mom can use" don't you understand?

Point taken.. but... Why then advertise it as if its the "only" software you need?

iLife and iWork would probably do better with a manual.
You do realize that there is HTML based manuals for these applications? This is 2009.

And finally to paraphrase you, what part of "we're not making it just for you, we're making a simple application that your mom can use" don't you understand?

People may just prefer real manuals. You don't buy a TV/microwave with a manual on disk/hypertext.

Now C may be too much for some, so they sell Vista at DISCOUNTED price points A and B, with a DOWNGRADED feature set of C as a cost to the user for getting the discounts.

They may even sell it at a cheaper than C price point of D, on the condition that 100 licenses are sold to the same buyer.

As for the "cost" of disabling features, that is added to the cost of A and B.

As for the "savings of having one disc, no packaging, and multiple licenses is "passed to" D.
