I think it's a *lot* easier to kill a floppy than it is to kill a flash drive, and structural integrity is a big pard of it. It's not hard to bend and destroy a floppy... have you ever tried the same with a flash drive? Those things are *stiff*.
A few desktop prank programs, especially the gems from LizardWorks, are always fun. SneakyIcons is particularly amusing, methinks:) Unfortunately, I have no clue if they'll run on XP.
Trying this with photos of celebrities... I find that George W Bush (picture from the Wikipedia article) looks like:
Olof Palme ("Tidligere statsminister, Sverige") and Martin Luther King.
The local libraries could really do something like this. All they have on their computers anyway is some sort of telnet-type terminal to their (legacy:) text-based card catalog system. Oh, and a few web browsers and MS Office. Nothing that can't be replaced...
My university library is a bit sillier. They have brand-spanking-new IBM machines worth several grand, I'm sure, and all they're doing is running kiosk-mode Internet Explorer to their card catalog site (one that is easily bypassed by Win+R, by the way).
Agreed. Around Wake Forest University the main requirements are Math 113 (Calculus), 117 (Discrete), and 121 (Linear). Discrete math is sets, trees, loops, graphs, et al. Linear algebra is vectors, vector spaces, projections, eigenvectors, eigenvalues, least-squares.
But I have to go study for my Linear Algebra exam right now .
Bah. I edit Wikipedia, and if that's not tab-intensive, I don't know what is.:) Who wants to go to RC patrolling?:) there's your 50 tabs right there, plus a few to check potential copyvios, see the talk pages, drop {{subst:test}} on all the newbie let's-test edits, notice page histories, keep an eye on your boilerplate and on Votes for Deletion...:)
Not quite sure what you're getting at, but I think it does (it'll re-launch your Inbox at the same viewpoint you left it and stuff like that)
Can I modify the From address by simply tyoing it in the From: line, without creating an account/identity for it?
No, I really doubt it. Though you could do a temporary address change in your Accounts settings. And pray that you remember to change it back... =/
Can we now move mails folder (on Windows) to somewhere else, and just launch it with an argument telling it where the profile folder is?
Unsure. Ask again later.
Does it still have that insane default folder structure? (c:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\default\sr5qf9vq.slt\Mai l\ etc. !!)
I prefer to start with ~/.thunderbird/default/, but I'm pretty sure Yes.
The firewall policies are still being outlined. I'm sure more will be published as the new network design is rolled out. I'm not an expert on the new network, but it is my understanding that there will be encryption on the new wireless network and you will have to authenticate to use the wireless network.
So they're promising it will be fixed by next semester. I just hope they don't kill all my fun network toys with an insanely restrictive firewall.
At Wake Forest University, rated the #2 Most Wired campus by the Princeton review, the campus-wide wireless network rollout is over the summer. And since half the students' laptops were found to have a defective component which IBM later recalled (and is replacing, starting three days ago and ending in a week) they're installing wireless cards as the machines are repaired.
Since I have housing in the Technology Quarters, I had some experience with the wireless network which was installed here early, but it was only with a PDA and not a full laptop. My room had poor reception, and I couldn't get a signal in any interesting places (like outside on the sun roof or patio). I'm hoping that next year when there's more access points up my new dorm will have better reception, particularly in the nice courtyard area.
Oh, and the network looks unencrypted so far. Which means I'll be checking my email with Pine over ssh. =b
URLs not linked for nicety purposes, but designed by Dr. Peter Favaro and published by Activision in 1983 we find:

Alter Ego is one of the rare games that's not only outstanding in every respect, but, like Fool's Errand, is so original in concept that it's hard to categorize. You play your own alter ego in this game, going through life stages while making decisions that impact several characteristics, such as calmness, trustworthiness, etc., that in turn affect the number of choices you have in future situation. You might learn a surprising thing or two about yourself while playing this life simulation. Overall, an outstanding game in every respect, and much more realistic than Maxis' recent blockbuster The Sims years later. Two thumbs up!
If you have a 30 story building, you can either put in dumb elevators which fill 3/4ths of the building to meet demand, or you can put in a much smaller number of elevators using techniques like express elevators and using software which keeps track of usage patterns and puts elevators on floors before somebody even hits the button...

Pfft. I know which of my neighbors owns the wireless router *I* use... the better to aim the Cantenna at it!

(ahemahemahemahem) HELLO! You must be new here! Welcome to Slashdot! :)

Consider using server irc.us.freenode.net port 7000. Most university IRC blocks, including mine, are only on port 6667.
Gaim + IRC does anything but "work well"... You should at least get a decent client like X-chat. ;)
Much better. I like my color filter. :)
Linux doesn't ship. Distributions ship. And they all ship differently.

Is it as "ballsy" as just inviting viruses by using, say, Outlook?
and the space elevator, too.
And the space elevator! Don't forget the space elevator! It'll be here any decade now as well!
They certainly don't suffer from any lack of ambition!!! goodness... :)
Obligatory notes: a) What about SPF? b) The name sucks! c) Licensing issues exist.
Only Fedora Core 1.

Yeah, but does the mailserver? I seem to recall trying to connect that way but failing. =(
