Is that true? I have absolutely no idea how AOL's network works, but I wouldn't be surprised if by the aol IP they could narrow it down to a city.

AOL has dialup numbers just about everywhere, I always assumed that everywhere there was a little AOL building with the modems and a big fibre to Virginia. I assume for routing purposes an IP is assigned from within the little AOL building. If they figured out AOL's routing then, they could get decent resolution.

Of course, I'm talking out of my ass, and this is all speculation, but if someone knows for sure, I'd be interested in hearing it.

Is the index in the print, or on the CD? Could you imagine having to stick the damn CD in, go to the back, look up a page, just to see its in the printed half? Damn, thats stupid.

Just having to read it off the computer you're working on is a pain in the ass, print is just faster unless you always have the pdf in memory, but having to putz around with that AND a book is asinine.

  13. Multiplayer on Nintendo Unveils GAMECUBE At Spaceworld 2000 · · Score: 1

My biggest complaint about the nintendo64 was the multiplayer capabilities. The split screen sucks unless you have a huge tv.

What I think would kick serious ass was the network capability between cubes (maybe thats what the serial/parallel ports are for?). First of all, you don't have to render 4x as many characters on one box, and secondly you can't just glance across the screen to see where your opponent is.

Now, the split screen is a feature they should keep, and I think its obvious the did given that there are 4 controllers/cube, but does anyone know if there is such a game console with this network multiplayer capability?

I actually spent the summer working with QNX (for robotic systems) and it is pretty cool. It is drastically different from any other *nix I've played with (granted thats fairly limited) but if you read the docs its managable.

One thing I've been wondering though is will livid work with it? If so, perhaps it will make the dvd's actually watchable in a unix environment. On my PIII 650 laptop the dvd playback keeps getting prempted by the kernel, and skips. Annoying.

  24. OT: When radio goes digital? on Ask Metallica About Napster · · Score: 1

It is going to happen eventually, radio will go digital. It opens up a whole bunch of cool technologies, I would love my radio to tell me the artist and song on the headunit when a radio song comes on. Also, this solves lots of typical broadcast problems like interference. You radio can jump to the nearest antenna, like a cell phone, and stations can have way bigger range, with uniform near perfect reception thoughout their area.

I am assuming this will happen, when it does, it seems that copying a song off the radio will be a perfect copy, assuming the stations don't fsckup the songs before hand.

Anyone have any thoughts/commments on this? I've always thought it would be cool, it would definatly change a lot in the music industry.

Does it need to be able to communicate with us above some predetermined level? Does it need to go completly crazy trying to fight for its survival? Does it even need to exhibit intelligence as humans know it?
