What I want to see is a decent Japanese Nintendo DS Electronic Dictionary. There's a "Dictionary Game" for the DS but it sucks for practical use. I'd love to see some Japanese dictionary maker come out with a cartridge that works on the level of my Canon Wordtank 3000 and allows me to draw characters for lookup. They could even throw in voice recognition and pronunciation, but that's not a must. Have foreign Japanese learners test it so it's good for them, and then make it to support the Japanese market too. (No Roma-ji please). All you have to do is design the software and you don't even need to worry about hardware production!

What I wouldn't give for a Multi-Cultural class that actually studied different cultures instead of how the white Anglo-saxon male has subjugated them.

Why not both? A class that ignores the effects of western colonialism would be just as useless as the one that focuses solely on it. If it's a Cultural Studies class that focuses on the present day situations it would be a huge oversight to ignore the effects of colonialism on cultures. Look at the number of countries that now speak English, French or Spanish. Or the british crown countries that play cricket or soccer. Or the institutions, both legal and cultural, that now exist as a result of "Anglo-Saxon" colonialism/subjugation/influence. This isn't bad, the story of colonialism is frequently one of cultural perseverance, adaptation, growth and strength. It's an important story and it deserves to be told.

Seems like the best class would be a balanced but not to ignore the effects of western colonialism just because it makes you feel bad for some reason.

  5. Re:How do we know this is manga? on American Newspapers to Begin Carrying Manga · · Score: 1

Well there could be several things that could make an American work be classified as Manga:

-adoption of a particular type of style. I would say this goes beyond "big eyes" as other posters have contended. Manga has a tendancy to use certain background designs, framing styles and page layout.

-adoption of Japanese Manga style publishing. Manga in Japan is mainly centered around weekly magazines that are large, thick and cheap. We have nothing similar in America. These magazines contain many authors and competition for inclusion and placement in the magazine is stiff. I agree that this case doesn't seem to be in agreement with this point. Daily newspaper strips aren't really in sync with Manga publishing styles.

-adoption of Japanese Manga style themes. Whether the focus is on the fantastic or home life there are certain themes that reappear in Manga. These are frequently very centered in Japanese culture and seem foreign to Western audiences.

So it's obvious that manga has meaning outside country of origin. Even if this particular instance isn't necessarily the best example of that. If a Western artist has chosen that term to describe their work then clearly to them it has some meaning beyond "Made in Nihon". Language evolves. It would be like people at the turn of the century saying that there's no need for a word like "impressionism" because we already have word in English, "painting."

Kayoukyoku is just the Japanese word for popular music.

It's important for the grandparent and other's to note is that what people think of as popular Anime or music in the states or other Western countries is frequently not all that popular in Japan. Very few Japanese right now are even familiar with Cowboy Bebop and those that are think of the show as being quite old and unpopular.

The most popular Anime in Japan are Doraemon (a story of a blue, earless, robot cat who can pull things out of a tummy pouch strictly for deus-ex-machina purposes) and Sazae-san, a television Anime about a mother who lives a very Japanese life and does simple, everyday things.

Most Anime that is popular in the US is rarely known by Japanese audiences, primarily I believe because the stuff that sells well in Japan references Japanese culture in a way that would translate poorly to other countries audiences. When Sazae-san's husband brings home warm sweet potatoes in winter, American audiences would have a hard time understanding the seasonal and cultural associations of such a moment.

Meanwhile, every culture seems to understand the language of big-ass-robot-ese.

  11. MOD PARENT UP on Google Steps Up Fight for the China Market · · Score: 1

Man, I always have those points when I don't need them and then a great post like this comes along and I can't show my appreciation.

China is a diverse nation, linguistically much more so than the United States. Are there problems there? Hell yes! Are there problems in America? Good Lord Yes!

As fore Falun Gong, the first google search to check out would be "Falun Gong Suicide" and find out about one of the reasons it is illegal in China, namely the tendency of it's members to commit mass suicide. When you ask most Chinese about Falun Gong it has the same associations that many American's would have towards that Waco Cult.

It's also ironic that the web-pages that the grandparent post listed were, a. in english and b. of old news that everyone in China is aware of and discusses readily. Nothing of more recent problems or censored issues. It shows that Reagan-era anti-Chinese attitudes are still prevalent today.

New Zealand has an active home grown music scene and if Apple could come in and help this market then they would also have a good opportunity for other Apple products to gain market here.

Yes, there are many definitions for the word "gimp" but only one is truly commonly used and it isn't anything you'd say to someone's face unless you knew them well.

Yes, I could create my own version of GIMP and rename it, but frankly it should come from within. Plus my reference was specifically about how to make GIMP taken seriously. If it doesn't want to be taken seriously that's fine but if it does then I, and many others, believe that the "cute" name needs to be changed.

Perhaps somebody, like the developers, could come up with a concurrent release with a more professional name, while keeping GIMP for beta testing and using GAMUT (Graphic Art Manipulation Usage Tool) for example for other releases. Or perhaps, if that's taken, then in the name of keeping linux programs named after alcohol GIN (Graphic Image Noodling), anything really would be fine. Now someone may jump in and say that gin could be offensive to alcoholics or something like that and if they're willing to drag every conversation to the lowest common denominator that's fine.

What it comes down to is that GIMP is a clever name, it's just not smart. Kinda something us geeks are stereotyped for.

I was at the a game show in Tokyo last friday and there were a few other sneak peaks that we got a look at. There is going to be a new Final Fantasy 7 universe game, but it's not Advent Children. Instead it's based around the character Vincent. It has a definite gothic flavor to it and seems like it may not be turn based.

The second is the Final Fantasy 7 mobile phone game which looks awesome and fun. It takes place before the original and seems to really flesh out some of the side characters.

I'm a little surprised that SquareEnix has chosen to refocus on Final Fantasy 7 but that may have to do with the appeal of the game to the Japanese market.

Here in New Zealand there are long streches of rail that have been relegated to infrequent, or complete disuse. Wish proper production and implementation this could be a godsend to tourism, allowing for the scenic, speed and accessibility benefits of rail while allowing for direct hotel access it could provide an in for a company looking to make a unique niche in the growing tourism sector here. I'm going to take a bite here. I'm sure other people have seen the problems in your example but I'll lay it out.

Raising prices of a product to increase demand only works when the product in question has a quality that is difficult to determine. For instance if a consumer is given the choice between two music players that have the same storage capacity but one costs $50 more than the other they might assume that the one that costs more is better. They do what could be called gambling economics, they know in their minds that better quality materials cost more than lesser quality materials so it's likely that the more expensive product has gold wiring instead of copper.

Of course once you've played around with technology long enough you know that price can be determined in odd ways that subvert the ol' concept of supply and demand.

Music, and perhaps most art, has a value that is rather easy to determine. You listen to the thirty second sample or you hear it on the radio. You know whether you like it or not and chances are you look for either the cheapest, quickest or easiest way to purchase it.

Now I suppose some music stores could start offering different compression techniques that claim higher audiophile quality. There could be some appeal in that some people want to believe they're getting a decent version of their favorite song. Who knows maybe we'll start seeing "iTunes with Techron" or some other appeal to a higher quality compression product. I doubt it though, you're already accepting lossy when you start purchasing online and I think what Apple understands is that people want cheap music that's easy to listen to. Cornering the audiophile market with .aiff downloads wouldn't just lack profit (like iTunes does now) but would be a pit that money would actively be poured down. At least for now.
