  1. Sounds nice and dandy..... on Xorg and Desktop Eyecandy · · Score: 1

So why won't ATI get off their ass and better develop their Linux drivers? Last I checked, the drivers for anything 9000+ (give or take 500 maybe) or newer don't have support for the features Xorg uses, and open source drivers don't exist for those chips. I'd like to think they will get support before it gets big, but at this rate, it may still be a while until they release drivers with the features it needs.

Well, maybe not.... I doubt your average high end gamer can do much better then the already available input modes for games that have had billions of dollars and over a dozen years of research put into them. And isn't this what hotkeys are for? Maybe for $50, I'd get one, but for $150, nah, I think this $12 IBM keyboard (or another alternative that isn't too much over $50) will do just fine....

I think my problem was the military had it's head up it's ass in recuruiting. After saying "Yeah, I'm going to college at xxxx next fall", they would say "blah blah, yeah, good school. bye" (or something similar). I had to do it quite a few times though to different recruiters...

And since posts are moderated here, most have probably begun to realize "Hey, people don't like trolling and obscenity..."

Usually when someone wants me to fix their computer, if it's an even moderate problem that could indicate it needs a good reinstall, I juse say "Where's your System restore disc?", and use that (Backing stuff up if necessary, but I've noticed most don't really have anything to back up). I wonder how often they do this when they charge so much for their services?

  8. I'd say balance on How To Balance Life And Technology For Kids? · · Score: 1

Based on personal experience (I'm almost 21 now), I'd say keep computer interaction to a minimal. I grew up out in the country surrounded by woods, pond, stuff like that, and I loved it. We had an Apple IIGS for as far back as I remember. I spent a good amount of time on it with various educational games (spelling, math, some drawing, puzzles, some midi software... Must....not....reminisce....), but not too much. The only major difference compared to today would probably be a) more graphical and b) Internet. I'd keep his exposure to the internet restricted for a while until it was necessary due to ease of addiction. Some educational games would be good, but old fashioned ways to learn work just fine. I'd also stay away from consoles for as long as possible. I wanted one, but I didn't get one till the SNES (1st grade. Friends still find it crazy that one of the biggest game freaks in our grade didn't have a NES). Then again, here I am on slashdot, so maybe that's not the way to raise a child... But it sounds good.... Computer Technology is "new" to us, but for it to be a standard "normal"... Seems dangerous.... Like how the normal "TV" has caused problems for some in our generation.

Seriously though. It would be interesting if M$ implemented their shells on other platforms to expand the number of people knowledgable with them (Since Windows is mainly GUI based, I'm guessing more people know *nix shells then Windows shells). We've all seen Apple doesn't have many morals in terms of who it will and won't take down. I see them having a room of 20 people googleing the net for the next 3 months, finding any traces of how to get it (be it nzbs, torrents, etc.), and threatening swift and harsh legal action against anyone supplying info to get it. Perhaps it will survive on traditional p2p networks though (I don't think Apple has the knowledge or experience to take people down on that like the RIAA).
