Also... the second series of Ghost in the Shell - 2nd Gig shows a "smart tank" controlled by an AI that can defeat RPGs with a similar active defense mechanism.
Regardless theres a LOT of very realistic scifi in GiTS... def worth watching.
My last company (Rojo) is an online news reader and I just think it's too complicated. Same with all the RSS aggregators. They're meant for a minority of the market (power users).
My new company, TailRank, is designed for people who don't care about RSS. They just want to be told what's hot in the blogosphere.
We'll have an API soon so that aggregators developers can integrate TailRank into their products. This should allow for the best of both worlds for many people.
Essentially my points are that there are cooler graph packages out there. The other issue being that it's not really a user-focused product. I just don't see many people using this.
It's really hard to measure blogs from a number of angles. Everyone always claims that your data is biased and there's still debate over what a 'blog' actually is... Feedburner is in a good place to measure blogs. I blogged about their stats last week.
There's also a lot of debate on the quality of various Blog search engines such as Technorati, Feedster, and IceRocket. I'm thinking of creating a meta indexer which simply monitors 100 real blogs at 1-5 minute intervals and then determines how quickly the blog search engines index them.
I'd love help if anyone's interested. I just don't have much time......
Very interesting first implementation. Light feature set but still pretty cool. Expect Yahoo to follow up. Would have been nice to see them deliver this sooner.
This is such a non story. There are so many reasons that MS would want Atom I can't even begin to imagine Atom not taking over the world in the next year:
I'd give them $100 to be able to run OSX on my hardware! I'm considering buying a Mac for just this purpose and having the hardware will certainly change things...
I'm not sure if anyone out there has every worked with a Collie before. They're really amazing.
The difference here is that they are HIGHLY motivated. I think we could learn a lot from this lesson.
Collies are able to have such an impact on our lives because they really really REALLY want to make us happy.
I've always wanted to own one but they are a LOT of work. It's almost a full time job. If you don't have work for them they will just go insane. Better to keep them on a farm...
Get pepper spray. You don't kill anyone and it's a LOT cheaper.
The worst for me is when I go into CompUSA and they try to demand searching my bags. I have a $2500 laptop... a $400 cam and a $300 PDA in there. I wonder if they will ever think I stole them;)
We want to ENCOURAGE open wireless networks! If you live in a dense city like San Francisco (where I live) if we had enough open networks we would have a decentralized Internet infrastructure across the city.
I'm sitting in a coffee shop right now in the Haight district of San Francisco (Waller and Cole actually) and there are 5 wireless networks on the corner.
The downsize is that 2 of them are WEP and I can't really get decent signal on the others due to lack of decent antenna and LoS.
Criaglist founder Criag Newmark is nice enough to have an Open AP right up the street but it's too far for me to reach it.
Second... WEP is NOT secure. What we REALLY need is a decent AP that has ipsec already setup and still allows open connections.
Of course I've been leading the way here. I've had an Open AP in my last 3 appts. Never had any problem.
Also.. when the RIAA comes calling I have probable deniability. I can just tell the Judge that it was some random wireless user and I have a Linksys AP and I'm not smart enough to secure it;)
Munin is pretty damn nice... Ganglia is also pretty decent. Both allow you to write custom scripts as well which is very important.
If you have a bigger cluster you might want to check out Ganglia too. They use UDP for machine discovery.
This might be bad for some people who rent hardware.

Hey. I happen to agree that RSS is to hard.

This is odd timing since I just blogged on Big Picture...

You sure!?
I've seen all 11 episodes already... Just turn to channel number usenet...
Unfortunately this channel isn't carried by most cable providers.
Call your cable companies and demand that they carry the usenet channel!
You too can watch all 11 episodes...
What about the 5th Freedom?
....
:)
Free as in $29.95
Seriously though.. I've made a lot of money selling (my) Free Software for $29.95...
I just had the source in CVS. If you were smart enough to checkout via anoncvs and to the build yourself that was fine.
If you needed help and wanted a really nice installer it cost you $29.95...
This let me work on my little project full time which then turned into a company.
We're 7 people now
... fairly new comet named Comet Machholz discovered by Don Machholz.
Wow! What are the odds that the guy would discover a commet which has his same last name! Amazing.
And its not like Machholz is a popular last name among commets either!
Man. These guys really need to support Linux!
I'd give them $100 to be able to run OSX on my hardware! I'm considering buying a Mac for just this purpose and having the hardware will certainly change things...

The good thing is that even though a monkey can hack the system this still puts the hack out of the reach of the average Republican ;)

Seriously... leave now. College will just suck your soul out of your body and leave you just a dry husk ;)
:)
I did it... went one year. My career hasn't been slowed down at all in fact it's taking off.
My company has funding, I'm at peek form, really know my shit, have some amount of respect in the industry, and college has never been an issue.
Anyway... Rock on!
PS. College is really good for some people... If you have ADD it's a good sign to quit. The system isn't designed for you...

Why in the WORLD would you want that?!
;)
First off...
