This is the biggest difficulty right now with Linux and laptops. I've had an Inspiron 8600 for months now and it still can't suspend (to memory or to disk).

If you want to get ACPI working correctly a kernel recompile is necessary and I'm sorry but users aren't going to do this.

Either we step forward and fix these issues or we can't expect users or vendors to take Linux seriously as a desktop operating system.

We're so close but 20% of the remaining functionality is 80% of the work.

I've been pretty down on the whole concept of voice recognition for a while now.

After NASA announced their subvocalization project (I'm too lazy to find the slashdot URL... someone earn karma for it!) I became excited again.

The problem is if you're in an office you can't just start talking. Right now there are 10 people around me and most people are silently working on there computers. If they all started barking commands it would be loud as hell in here. It just doesn't scale.

If you add the subvocalization work this totally changes the equation. Now I can silently tell my computer to do things while my hands type away.

This is going to ROCK. Talk about multitasking... I can be typing out this slashdot post and without stopping I could launch gaim, ymessenger, make sure I'm on IRC... startup Emacs in the background , etc.

This was just published an hour ago:

IBM on Wednesday sent an open letter to Sun Microsystems urging Sun to make Java technology open source, CNET News.com has learned.

In a letter sent by Rod Smith, IBM's vice president of emerging technology, IBM offered to work with Sun to create a project that would shepherd development of Java through an open-source development model. If implemented, portions of Sun's most valuable software asset--Java--would be freely available, and contributors ranging from volunteer programmers to large corporations would submit changes to the Java software.

Granted I have no idea if it's legal but who cares... it's all fun :)

So in this case you could hack the bookmarklet to replace the EULA with something like:

"All Your Base are not belong to Central Pacific"

and then hit the "I Agree" button.

It doesn't work for everything but at the very minimum you could search the page for "I Agree" and replace it with "I DON'T AGREE YOU INSENSITIVE CLOD!"

If you live in San Francisco head up to North Beach and you can't go wrong.

NewsMonster supports the ability to export an article for PDA readability and strips out all non-format compliant content (no tables, images, etc.) All you're left with is just the raw article.

    Lets call this warcoking :)

If they want to track you that means they have transmit which means I can potentially receive the signal.

An easy way to game this would be to hang outside a Coke distribution center with antenna and a decent laptop.

You just sit in your car and try to find coke machines that are leaving the facility and are transmiting.

Then you follow the truck until it stops its xmit and you found your store. Then you go in and scan the shelves with the laptop until you find the right can.

    Bingo...

What would be really funny to do is the money from the contest to buy another GPS ;)
