  6. Coup or Disaster in the Making? on Grand Theft Auto for US PSP Launch · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm a big Nintendo fan, although I own all of the current generation systems and a DS.

GTA coming to the PSP could be a huge coup, I mean who wouldn't want to play GTA3 (or something with new content) as a portable.

Here's the potential disaster in the making, portables are generally marketed towards a younger crowd, although both Nintendo and Sony profess to be targeting an older demographic. What's going to happen then little timmy strolls into his school with a PSP with GTA on it. Hits the media, then it hits the fan.

The other potential disaster is that the PSP only lasts two hours with GTA in it. If Ridge Racers is only lasting three or so, I couldn't imagine what the more powerful games will do to the battery.

That being said, I'm a sucker for a gadget. Wipeout, GTA and Lumines should be enough for me to give it a shot. Especially if the price hits at $150. $250-$300 and I'll probably step back for awhile.

The problem with the "why X is good" in this case is that the X's he chose are what make the PSP not good right now. Half of the points basically tell you to wait a couple years or to spend more money, it'll get fixed, it's worth it, there'll be better games.. I'm not holding a smudgy black brick.. really!

  11. Re:AdBlock on Firefox Users Bad For Advertisers · · Score: 1

Unfortunately this probably won't happen, because intrusive ads get more response, someone will always be a jerk and run them because they pay better. A good metaphor might be the NHL (if you follow hockey):

The owners want a salary cap on the players because they're losing so much money. So why not just band together and pay less? Because they can't handle it. Someone, even just a single owner can't resist the urge to pay an extreme amount of money to improve their team and take a player out of another teams hands.

You could take all of the computer news sites on the Internet, give them all the same content, and the first one to run interstitials will make significantly more money and get more advertisers, allowing them to do bigger and better things. Everyone will then be forced to move to more intrusive ads or watch their placements plummet to 0.20 CPM.

It sucks unless you can get away with it by having a solid user base and excellent targetted advertising. Slashdot is a great example. The other way is to have some oligopoly Pepsi v. Coke style stuff, but then the little guys die and you're stuck with two or three big massive sites that you'll hate.

My understanding is that replacing the battery is pretty simple (as is the case with the DS and SP.) So that shouldn't be a worry. You're right on the money though, someone is out there trying to design the first high-capacity battery.

Yeah I was wondering the same thing. My Sony Laptop (which ironically was rated at 2.5 hours and only got me an hour tops) had a new higher capacity battery released for it shortly after, which also costed a good chunk. 21. Re:Ok some things you are forgetting.. on More PSP Impressions, Loading Times Examined · · Score: 1

I totally agree that it's too early to call this. But at the same time it's time to get some realistic expectation as to what a consumer expects from a portable device. A load time of 20 seconds is probably unacceptable for someone whipping the thing out on the bus to play a couple holes of golf. Battery life of two hours is unacceptable to someone who wants to take the thing on a trip. That's the bottom line. If I wanted what you're selling me I'd save a lot of money buying an LCD for my PS2 and keeping it plugged in all the time. You're going to be even doubly pissed if half of your 2 hours of battery life is spent spinning up discs! If you used this new fangled "google" search engine, you'd find that Nintendo is heavily pushing this towards teens and young adults. The marketing campaign for the DS hasn't even had a hint of Mario, and putting a FPS as a pack-in solidifies that. Selling out the three PSPs the local import shop is not an accurate depiction of what is going to happen. I think the PSP is going to be a viable product, but it's going to rely on a few things: Price, Software, Durability and Battery Life. Next week, we'll probably get a good idea of the PSP in all of these respects (with the exception of price in the US) And the DS is $150 and the GBA SP is $80 currently. Parents should be looking at the SP. Giving a child a $200 PSP is like giving them a cracked piece of plastic.. At least after they drop it on Christmas day :)
