  1. Re:Why? I'll tell you why if I can.......... on The Decline of the Video Game Mascot · · Score: 1

Good point. And lets not forget, back in the day, the best we could hope for is to be a cartoon character. Today, gamers want realism, to be an actual person.

  3. What they represent... on The Decline of the Video Game Mascot · · Score: 1

Back in the day Mario used to represent the innovation and 2d platforming goodness. He even made the jump to 3D. Sonic represented speed and "Blast-Processing." Once we hit PS One, we're looking at the machine and going: What the hell does this Bandicoot thing represent. What about is it about this game that makes it stand out from every other on the current system or any other system. Nothing. Fast-Forward to today. None of the company mascots represent anything special about the systems. They're all relatively equal in power, the games are all the same. You don't need representation for what essentially is a custom, yet standardized PC in a box. The companies today can't let go of those mascots though because they're really the image attached to the company, so what do they do? Churn out sequel after sequel or spin-off after spin-off.

Five pixels is a bit much, even for a notebook. I'm really surprised they're willing to change it even for a single pixel. It's a pretty classy move, most would say one or two is within standard parameters.

I ended up getting $48 for my GBA SP, but I traded it in last week to hopefully get a better price over at Gamestop. It'll probably be about $40 once the DS comes out. Not bad though considering new ones are going for $79.99 which means used ones will be going for $59-$69.

  8. don't be an idiot. on The Urban Geek As A Mugger Magnet? · · Score: 1

Along with the use a regular backpack with a sleeve and change your iPod headphones to something non-white, use common sense. You can use your iPod when walking, just don't be an idiot and walk with it in your hand out in the open. Make a playlist and keep it put away. Everytime I see someone on the street (once a day) I think about a linebacker coming around the corner and slapping it out of the persons hand and running away with it. In most places its less about being mugged, and more about having something straight up snatched right from you.

It's getting to be a bit blatant that he does this simply for publicity now. It's not like Apple's DRM is that restrictive. Just burn to a cd, and rip. It's the way to back up files anyhow.

He's not doing it for Linux like he said he was for DVD, that's obvious because he tried on Windows first... In fact, I wonder if he was even decoding DVD's for Linux now a days.

  12. Batteries, Warranties, Ramblings. on Washington Post Covers iPod Battery Ruckus · · Score: 1

Where did this guy find a cell phone battery for $10? I had to go out and buy a new cell phone because the only replacements available for my old one was $50. As for the iPod, I picked one up recently at Best Buy, and spent $40 to get FOUR YEARS of coverage on it. As long as I don't drop kick it, or dunk it in acid, I'll just switch it up if and when the battery dies for the 80G when it happens :). So if you want an iPod, worried about the battery, just hook up with one of these. Sweet deal. Anyhow the rest of this Neistat stuff is old. It's just a publicity machine now. The only people that care are shills, trolls, and reporters a month and a half behind the times. This coming from an iBook and iPod owner. Sheesh.

You'll need the Professional Edition which was sold through Gobe (which also made the Gobe Productive Office Suite). it was $50 retail, you should be able to find it on E-Bay for much less. Gobe might even still be selling it.

There were a couple Power Mac models that it wasn't compatible with, but most should be cool with it.

BeOS is spectacular for your old boxes laying around if you want to try something new. It books on my AMD/300 with 64 MB of RAM in under 15 seconds.

YellowTAB is creating the next incarnation of BeOS code named Zeta, which essentially R6. It should upgrade driver support for the newest hardware releases. Unfortunately a free edition looks doubtful.
