Good for you, I have issues with my system crashing (hanging actually). I know that it is s software issue somewhere because running alternate OS's on the same system does not crash.

To be 100% fair though, it is some third party software that seems to cause the problems. I rebuild the system and it runs perfectly fine until I get around to installing some software (not wares or any such) will cause it to hang periodically.

On the other hand, I have never installed any software on my Linux box that has caused the system to hang, so I would still say the basic design of 2000/XP is flawed when stray software can cause kernel hangs.

  3. HD IS better on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray Disappointing So Far · · Score: 1

Since I have yet to see a comment that actually praises any hd format, I'll have a go.

I bought a Panasonic AE900U Projector (720p) projecting on a screen that is 10 feet wide, do any of you guys really think that a DVD looks as good as HD on that?

HD blows it away and really spoils you for watching DVDs again. At 10 feet wide DVDs look soft as heck and the lack of resolution makes a huge difference. Sure on my 42 inch plasma it's not that big of a difference, but at 10 feet it sure as heck is. Watching Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, you can read every single newspaper article as they go by, not just the headlines. Watching Unforgiven, you can see every detail in the landscape. When done right, the picture literally looks 3D, as opposed to the flat picture a dvd gives you at that size.

And while I do have HDMI on my projector, guess what? Even if I didn't, every HD-DVD I own would look just as good because there is not one disc released yet that implements that crappy ICT. Yeah it sucks, but I think the studios did listen at least a little and have not used it (yet).

So while quite a few of the gripes here are valid, bottom line is I am very happy with my Toshiba player and the quality of the picture it produces. Now I would like to see more titles out for it, but I can't afford to buy them all anyway and since Netflix lets me rent the crappier titles, I have no regrets being an early adopter in this case.

Uh, isn't that exactly what an ipod video is?

I use the video out cable to power an lcd in the car so my kid can watch TV shows I have recorded with MythTV and occasionaly watch things myself without having to deal with a dvd player and seperate DVDs. Works well for that. I can't imagine ever wanting to watch something directly on that little screen.

I can see this being a slight bonus for people with an older ipod who want to actually watch things on it during a commute or a plane ride. But for the price, why not just buy a PSP, and get an even nicer screen?

Being able to watch shows purchased on ITunes is a plus, but I don't actually see where this player can do that since it uses it's own section on the hard drive. So the PSP is a better deal for that.

The movie grossed $38M worldwide, which is pretty close to the original budget.

Theater grosses account for about 18% of a movies income these days. DVD, pay channel fees, and tv airing fees all count a whole lot more than theater now a days.

So the movie is not a loss for Universal, they will make some money on it. How much is something we will never know. I have no idea if they would ever greenlight a sequel, but it's not exactly a done deal that they won't.

As I said I don't totally disagree and Exchange is a good tool is you need all the features and integration it provides, but most companies that have it use it as an email server and maybe group calendaring. For that use it is expensive and there are better, less expensive, more stable alternatives.

And talk about partially working, if you want to do anything with Exchange (like back it up), you will be paying more for 3rd party tools to do the things MS should have provided.

And people buy MS Office which means that Outlook is essentially free.

I don't totally disagree with your point, and Exchange is a good fit for a lot of organizations, but your arguments are pretty silly.

Besides the fact that the article states that " All the products support Active Directory", what part of AD do you need to support email?

AD can be accessed using LDAP so all the information is there, and CommuniGate for one, can be externally scripted to do anything you want. I set that sucker up to externally route emails to different office servers based on an AD attribute.

And yes, Exchange could do the same thing only a lot more expensively and if anything goes wrong, have fun troubleshooting.

Stable as can be and I use Codeweavers Office to run Office XP with Outlook et al. and it works great. Just moved to a Thinkpad T42 laptop and Mandrake works fine there too, all hardware supported (except WIFI, sigh... needed to download a driver from intel but it does work). Even goes in and out of Hibernation using the kde klaptop utility, very cool. Everything worked great with the port replicator for the laptop also.

No complaints here, I still think it's one of the best distros around for setting things up for you. I recognize the power of things like Gentoo and Ubuntu, and when I was young and had time maybe I would use those distros, but I am just trying to get my work done, and Mandrake is the easiest install with the least post setup package install/configuration tasks. It just works for the most part.

But I am not a big fan of urpmi, I enjoyed that brief period when apt-rpm worked on Mandrake. Although it does seem like urpmi has been reworked and it does seem much more stable these days, haven't run into any problems with it breaking my system or dependencies.
