Nothing to miss. My point was that RPM hell is not intrinsic to the RPM package manager. You could easily get into deb hell if it were not for the tighter control that the Debian and Ubuntu repository people have and the more pragmatic approach to what repositories exist and what is in them.

"APT is great" Grrr!! Sorry, but my pet hate! apt ~= yum i.e. go and find the packages I need dpkg ~= rpm i.e. install or remove the package All the package managers do is copy, move and delete files, keep a list of what files/packages are installed and keep a list of where packages can be obtained. The reason why Ubuntu "just works" is because: 1) The Ubuntu team keep a tight(er) reign on the repositories, so there is very little need (if any "need") to use 3rd party repos. 2) More stuff that people need it in the repositories so you do not get A. Newbie trying to install an ancient RPM on a modern system and having it screw wverything up.

I get my music from eMusic too, and CDs.

We have a total of 28 iTunes tracks in our 5000+ song collection. 25 of them were free with my ipod (which in turn was purchased using points from my CC, not real $s). The other three were to complete an album (bad management on my behalf).

Anyway, if everybody thinks this is such a conspiracy by Apple, how come the record companies do not embrace the DRM-un-laden eMusic (god damn terrorists!)?

No DRM would equal more sales for Apple, end of story. Something tells me Jobs would be more than interested in more sales than enforcing having DRM on other peoples copyrighted material?

OTOH, I do agree that iTunes (software) + iPod is a pain.... which is one of the reasons why I use gtkpod/gnupod. It would be nice to be able to copy the music to the ipod like it was any old drive and then let the ipod scan the music to create the itunes db.

I'm from the UK and live in Australia, which is somewhere between the US and the UK in this respect.

The problem with "real democracy" is that there are a lot of ignorant people.

For instance, Toowoomba in Queensland (QLD) which is under severe drought recently had a vote on whether to start using recycled water for drinking water, like most modern cities outside of Australia. The vote ended up being "no". The leader of the no campaign's main argument seemed to be that people will call the town "Poowoomba". The vote was held regardless of the fact that there was no other viable option anyway.

The "wise man in parliament", QLD premier Peter Beattie, has now basically said "tough luck. There is no choice. Water is going to be recycled."

The problem now is that will there be enough water in time.

I am in no way anti-democracy and will defend ignorant people having their say. However, sometimes my jaw literally drops at the ignorance of a lot of voters (and the administrators for that matter). Surely there has to be some kind of happy medium?

I have been slammed by a big (~2M disc diameter) stingray in an aquarium (a mate sneaked some frozen fish into my pocket :) ), it was absolutely hilarious, far from scary. They are simply not agressive. They filter sand for little crustacean and fish fodder. You would have to seriously provoke them for them to do more than just swim away. The Lx8100-MN does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to solve this.

The only effective way of doing this just for CPUs is to either use low power processors (as mentioned by parent) like Via or use massive heatsinks (e.g. Scythe Ninja - which by looking at the picture will not fit in this case) with quiet, big and slow fans (e.g. Nexus 120mm).

Hard drives are even trickier to silence. Putting them in boxes like the Scythe Quiet Box or SilenX HDSS or getting very quiet drives to begin with and suspending them or placing them on foam seems to be the only way to do it.

Without doing either of the above it is not going to be silent. Even being very quiet will be hard to achieve.
