  1. Self-Evident on Study Finds Windows More Secure Than Linux · · Score: 5, Insightful

"...Ford said the idea was to represent what an average system administrator may do, as opposed to a "wizard" who could take extra steps to provide plenty of security on a Linux setup, for instance." By his own admission the Linux administrator is a "Wizard" compared to the average MS Systems Admin. Well, that just about says it all doesn't it?

Stilted is an understatement. There are more run-on sentances than a 4th graders essay on "What I Did Last Summer". If you have to spend ten minutes trying to wind your way through the first page of this abysmal attempt at prose, how in the hell can you ever have an appreciation for the "story" behind the horrible writing? I guess this writing style may appeal more to people with more of an attention span than my ADHD self!

  6. Cingular signs deal with Campus Frat-houses on Phone Plus Sensory Deprivation Equals... · · Score: 1

This just in, College Frat-houses have banded together and signed a deal with Cingular. Cingular will now provide sensory deprivation mobile phones, free of charge, to all female students on approximately 70% of the American campuses. This of course means that the drop off rate for female students will climb through the roof as the pregnancy occurences for freshman females grows.

  7. The other side on Exposing Personal Information in the Whois Database · · Score: 0, Offtopic

Ever had to try and track down some company you bought something from on ebay, or the internet in general? It is pretty damn nice to be able to find the contact info in whois, since general practice is NOT to include addresses or phone numbers for contact, for many of the internet based businesses.

I realized I could outfit my penis with some sort of cylindrical latex apparatus that would allow me to mount a flexible keyboard around it. This would leave plenty of room, also allowing for both hands to contact the surface at the same time. I think it will need a receptacle tip though as I may get turned on when typing long posts to slash dot.

There will always be a high demand for the latest and greatest games/consoles from the pre-teen to the post-teen age groups. The thing is, we have gotten a taste, starting with Pong, and will never get enough until you jack us straight in, and get a virtual reality that is more than a messy abortion. Addiction is a word that comes to mind, and people will do anything to pay for their addictions.

  15. OUCH!!! That hurt! on Linux vs. Windows: Choice vs. Usability · · Score: 1

It has been medically proven that to think, actually causes a reaction in the brain that is similar to what happens when pain is perceived. Making choices implies the need for thought to make a decision. People tend to avoid pain. There is absolutely nothing wrong with providing the ability to make a choice, for the masochistic)i.e. technically savvy), however a standardized, GUI for complete idiots is going to have to be the default if competition with MS products is the real goal. Any readers who have worked in ID10T support positions will likely concur.

Hmmmm, YOU are in charge of this department, hell you ARE the department. Set standards that make sense, and demand compliance. Your role as an IT manager should be to enforce reasonable standards compliance, for the good of the company, as well as for protection of its data. Understandably this can be a sticky situation when dealing with Upper management, owners, people with more weight to throw around than you, HOWEVER, they hired you to do a job, SO DO IT!!!

  21. Copyright infringements or social philosophies? on Ask a Music Producer/Publicist About Filesharing and the RIAA · · Score: 2, Insightful

How do you think any group will ever be able to enforce or completely limit filesharing anyway? The historical facts show that people will ALWAYS find a way to do what they want to do, regardless of what measures the PTB put in place to restrict or inhibit said actions. Remnember, many of the people who enjoy such forums as this are just sorts of people who will always take is as a personal challenge to discover a way around limitations, rules, laws, etc..., for no other reason that to prove it can be done. The more you fight it, the more creative they get, until eventually the original issue being debated is obscured by the battle that evolved between 2 groups with diametrically opposing viewpoints on life in general(think Democrats / Republicans not just fileswappers / RIAA)
