This, in fact, is why you should be welcoming the digital switchover. Currently the digital signal is being run at low power as the stations have to put out both signals, the digital signal is able to reach a large proportion of the population at watchable quality with a fraction of the power. Once analogue is switched off the digital can be powered up, everyone that had been able to get analogue will then be able to get digital at good quality.

The problem in the UK isn't the region encoding (there are many DVD players on sale as being region free, no need even to get a remote unlock code for it) but the BBFC. There would be almost no import market in the UK for foreign discs because retailers can not sell discs that haven't been rated by the BBFC.

He said almost ever. Money is a limited resource and even if people wanted to they often won't or can't pay for the amount they can get when downloading. If you compare the music collection of your average non-downloader compared to your average downloader it's an order of magnitude smaller. The downloader wouldn't have purchased that 10-100 times as much music if they hadn't downloaded, they'd have just bought a few of them.

  15. Re:reason for, reason not for on Blank Keyboard · · Score: 1

Agreed. We did have a few IT lessons where we loaded up the horrible and ancient Acorn typing tutor but few people really cared that much and most of our time was spent on the custom lessons, with two keys and of 1 charecter length, trying to get WPM > 1000 by guessing the right one and hitting it as it starts.

But when switching between several IMs, IRC, forums and everything else the average web savvy teen does I just started to slowly remember where keys were and one day hit the realisation that I was touchtyping with a reasonable speed and acuracy (though some purists may be horrified at some of the fingers I use for some keys).

  16. Re:TTOTD on Sites or Software for a Budding Typist? · · Score: 1

Good suggestion. The problem with learning touch typing is it's boring. Some companies like Mavis Beacon go the wrong edutainment approach and make a "game" where just turns your wpm in to a variable on an otherwise boring simulation. TTOTD takes good game and says "why don't we use a keyboard"? And actually becomes fun.
