Perhaps but i can't go to the mall and buy a linux laptop. The ONLY unix like OS i can buy is a mac at the mall. When the CEO of redhat doesn't use linux on his primary box at work, i think that says a lot. You'd think redhat could buy from a linux vendor. I saw him interviewed a few years ago on a pbs money show and he admitted that he used windows AND that linux wasn't ready for the desktop. He thought linux was only good for servers. I think linux has matured since then, but its not a mac. Aside from hardware, either KDE or GNOME needs to win the war. We need a standardized gui environment. While I like KDE better, I want GNOME to win because of the licensing issues with Qt. Commercial vendors shouldn't have to pay more than visual studio pricing to develop on any platform and mac os has FREE developer tools with every mac. Think about that.

Macs and pcs cost the same price essentially as everyone else has stated. Price a dell laptop with a radeon card and other ibook features and equal warrenties. Then goto apple.com and price the same thing. If you are a student, look at the even great apple price difference. Apple's academic prices are much better than dell's. My 400 dollar pc isn't a powermac if you know what i mean. I built it myself and sure it has sata raid but also a amd sempron 2300+ and 256mb ram. I could have bought a mac mini for that with crappy disk io but better everything else. Now my dell precision 650 dual xeon was 1399 refurb and my wife's powermac g4 dual 867 was 1799 new (about 1.5 years apart). Both of us bought new ati video cards for gaming and with speakers and display her's was about 300 dollars more. Her's was new and mine was refurb though. NetBSD is very fast for certain operations and is often used in networking research (internet2, ipv6, etc). If you don't have an SMP box or hyperthreading its quite fast and in my opinion the best os on sparc architectures. The ports system is a bit different. They have something called pkgsrc thats portable across operating systems. All bsds have a twist on the ports collection really. Its a big factor in choosing.

I'm a FreeBSD user primarily and I think NetBSD has some good points like major portability. I think they do more testing and its generally a more stable OS. FreeBSD 6.0 release should fix most of the recent problems. Think of NetBSD like a continuation of FreeBSD 4.x more. There are a lot of differences, but mostly small things. FreeBSD 5 and 6 are attempts to improve dual core, SMP, and hyperthreading based computers in the long haul.

NetBSD and FreeBSD people don't tend to get along simply becuase there's real competition lately between the two projects. Both are great operating systems and I think both are good at different tasks. If you plan on running a bsd on non ia32 hardware, definetely check out NetBSD. It might be worth trying it just to see if there are any unique features. If you are a programmer and like freebsd more, you can help out and add some of the great netbsd features to freebsd or vise versa.

The problem with Oracle is that it runs on a very small number of operating systems and processor architectures. Open source databases like MySQL run on WIndows, Linux, BSD, OSX, Solaris, etc. MySQL can run on PPC, Sparc, IA32, AMD64, etc. For example, I could not port my current java based website (tomcat, servlets/jsp) from MySQL 4.x to Oracle simply because my target platform (FreeBSD 5.4) is not supported. Trying to get Oracle to run in FreeBSD's linux emulation is impossible. Heck i downloaded Oracle 9i and 10g for linux and tried to get it up on a redhat EL3 workstation box and that was a real chore in itself. Oracle's installer sucks. Its java based and is VERY picky about the java vm version it is running under.

I'm not fan of MySQL at this point, but it is easy to get running and with MySQL 5 out the door I may finally get stored procedures provided php isn't totally broken for my other sites.

Oracle if you're listening, think about fixing that installer and get some more OS support. OS lock-in sucks and if i have to deal with that I might as well use MS SQL Server which I like a great deal over MySQL.

The java vm startup time is a problem for client apps, but server side its not a big deal. Running tomcat with servlets, jsp and the like is very fast. .NET app startup time is slower than running a program written in another language as well. Try running the ati control panel (.net version). Now that is slow. Limewire loads faster and its a java app.

Motherboards seem to go out faster on home built systems in my experience.

The other scenario is when you need a high end system. I priced out building an SMP box (dual processor only) about a year and a half ago. Using newegg, it was about $1300 dollars to build a dual AMD athlon 2800+ MP machine with 512mb ram. The motherboard and processors were about $700 dollars by themselves. I then had to buy ecc ram for the motherboard. A dual xeon 2.4 ghz was about $1800 dollars. My solution was to buy a refurb dell precision dual 2.0ghz xeon for $1300 dollars and then drop a good video card and dvd drive in it. Best of all, the dell had a 3 year warrenty whereas my newegg box would have had no warrenty. Maybe some vendors would have had a warrenty on specific components.

.NET supports tons of languages, but mono does not! Remember everyone the goal of mono is not to be microsoft .net compliant. It is to be similar to .net but not support everything and add extensions of their own. They don't want you to run windows code on linux, they want you to run mono code on windows and linux with the MONO runtime. Its not portable in the sense that you can run ALL .net 1.0 from windows using microsoft's .net runtime on mono and vise versa. Java gives you portability, mono does not. Finally, java runs on non windows/linux/mac os x systems. I can run java on freebsd but i can not run mono (well it crashes with thread/garbage collection problems all the time).

Java = portability; mono = novell's quality of software (bad)

I've personally talked to a mono developer at my university. He works for novell on the project and they never intend to make mono compatible with .NET. He even said i was stupid for wanting it to be compatible. Mono should not be advertised as .NET for linux because its not. Its C# for linux but on a different runtime. VB.NET support is not complete in mono either.
