    The first of your examples is about a... thing which had a world-wide monopoly. PNG did not replace GIF although it is better. The second example is not about a monopoly. Yes, gzip replaced compress because it is better.
    What would you say about Samba?

    Oh, that's pitiful :-) Here, in Bulgaria, even BMWs were ordered. Some FBI agents came personally to investigate but as in Macedonia nobody really got jailed.

    I can. Like writing free software.
    Competing against Microsoft, IBM, etc. with $20 utilities might once have been possible. But competing against the F/OSS hordes with something less valuable (I mean real price) than $1000 is not possible today.
    In summary: not that I don't like the idea of shareware for Linux, it simply won't happen.

    Nope, they aren't so many. Even Joel (pro-MS, IMHO) said it. .NET's popularity is nowhere near the popularity of Java when the latter was 3 years old, although .NET is hyped as much better than current Java and Sun didn't have a large developer base back then.
    I haven't seen usable applications based on .NET. The only one I have heard that might be usable, is Bulgaria's e-governemnt site. The decision to use .NET is clearly non-technical - the fact that Microsoft bribes Bulgarian politicians (on the expense of us, taxpayers) is a public secret.
    Bribing politicians instead of gaining developers' attention? Nope, doesn't sound like .NET could become popular even in the future.

    Wow, I can't believe you are complaining! I have ONLY an HTTP(S) proxy at work. Well, I had :-) Got a real IP for my home machine, tuned OpenVPN, and voila :-)

    Well, according to Chomsky's hierarchy, regular expressions are equivalent to the simplest possible languages (automatic ones). Human languages are context-dependent, i.e. two levels more complex! I suppose you get my point :-)

    BTW, programming languages are (usually) context-independent, i.e. right in the middle of regular expressions and natural languages. Therefore, every kid at the age of 2 should be able to learn programming really easy :-)

    It's certainly not useful to stereotype everything they do as bad, considering they're so successful (funny how often people utterly ignore that).

    Well, the Third Reich was successful, too, but its success lead to the deaths of more than 50 mln. people...

    Disclaimer: I don't mean to offend the Germans. As well as (most) of the Microsoft employees.
