  1. Re:Pardon me, but.... on World's First Voice Call From a Free GSM Stack · · Score: 2, Informative

If I'm reading correctly, yes, eventually you could roll your own phone using completely open source stuff - hw and sw. What I'm less clear on is how the signal is being carried. Granted, I didn't read too in depth, but you still need a carrier to allow your phone on their network, no?

  2. UMW on Does Your College Or University Support Linux? · · Score: 1

University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA, for all it's shortcomings, has a fantastic CS faculty - you are using gcc on HP-UX for your compiling, and you're gonna like it. Also, they support Linux. No questions asked - they make you install symantec if you're on a windows box, and they look at you a little funny if you're on OSX, but if you're on linux, you log in with your student log on, and go. Have I mentioned their professors actually teach C and Python because Java is the devil?

  3. Re:Sign me up... on Microsoft Attacks Linux With Retail-Training Talking Points · · Score: 1

It's not being forced on employees. It's just a good deal - if you take the course, you get a full version of Windows 7 Ultimate for $10. If people actually drink the kool-aid, that's another problem entirely. Personally, I didn't even read the slides. Just went through and took the tests.

  4. Re:How funny on How Do You Find New Non-RIAA Music? · · Score: 1
It's hard to get a message heard if you're an indie band, so why not let the corporations you're fighting do the work for you?

pro-business Last time I heard, shutting down the NYSE isn't exactly pro-business
  5. Well... on Does File-Sharing Really Hurt the Music Biz? · · Score: 1

Ok, I'll agree that taste is a highly subjective thing. And I will agree that every generation has it's legion of crap played on the radio.
However, from an analytical standpoint, with a few exceptions, what is played on the radio has become less musically interesting in recent years.

What do I mean? Well, take for example two vocal groups: the Pussycat Dolls and NSync: the music in the background is pretty boring in both, yes, but the Pussycat Dolls sing in monophony, while NSync actually sung harmony, which is more musically interesting - 5 people singing one note (monophony) vs. 5 people singing 3 or 4 different notes (harmony).

That has been the trend as of late with most vocal groups - get a bunch of people with pretty-ish voices, put a machine behind them, and tell them what note to sing vs. get a bunch of people with some training, put a machine behind them, and tell them what notes to sing.

Again, taste is subjective, but how musically interesting / complex a song is, is not.

  6. If you can't beat 'em on Sun Spearheads Open DRM · · Score: 1

Yes, DRM sucks, yes, it's the great evil of our age, blah blah blah.
The point is, in all likelihood, it's here to stay, and if we can at least keep the methods and delivery open, maybe we can make it less of an evil.
Think about it, which is better: DRM in the hands of Microsoft, Sony, etc., or DRM in the hands of the community?

So since this new planet is bigger than Pluto, and most likely affects Pluto's orbit, I say we call it Mickey.

Also, what happens to the moons of Pluto - IIRC, Pluto has two satellites orbiting it...Chip and Dale, I think. If Pluto becomes a non-planet, do these just become asteroids?

  10. Re:And at that rate... on Deadline Looming for Microsoft in Antitrust Case · · Score: 1

That's because you're not a huge corporate entity. Enron, Tycho, all those execs are getting a slap on the wrist, and maybe some time at Club Fed, and they've been doing that shit for years. The law doesn't work the same for corporations as it does for us normal (well, as normal as anyone on slashdot is...) folk.

  11. Someone bring out the dustpan... on First Commercial Space Tourism Company · · Score: 1

Well, one advantage of this form of travel is that if the plane malfunctions, there's no meddlesome debris to deal with. On a more serious note, would a black-box like recording system be plausible for this? I.e. wouldn't it burn up in re-entry if the plane blew up? Or does sub-orbital imply that there isn't enough atmosphere?

  12. Re:John Williams is a Whore on Might Episodes VII - IX Still Be Made? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Obiously you've never heard the composer's mantra:

"Good composers write, Great composers steal."

It's true. Now, I'm not belittling Gustav Holst, he's actually one of my favorite composers (I find Hammersmith riveting), but very little of what is or has been written can be called truly "original".

And calling John Williams a hack is just plain wrong, man. Anyone that's ever composed or arranged something knows how hard it is to do in the first place, and then making it sound decent is a whole new challenge.

Yea, yea "It's his job" blah blah blah. Still, he writes good music, and when he steals, he steals from good material.

I seem to remember hearing that the Cronicles started out as a parody of religeon before he changed his mind became a christian.
Nope. I did an annotated bibliography on Tolkien and Lewis, and was actually suprised to find out that by the time Lewis started writing the Chronicles, his good buddy Tolkien had already convinced Lewis that Christianity was the way to go. Interestingly enough, Tolkien, the one who was born, raised, and stayed catholic his entire life, did not let his religion seep through into his writing as much as Lewis did. Interesting point though, Lewis converted to Protestantism, instead of Catholicism. I believe it was shortly after this that Lewis and Tolkien stopped talking, because Lewis started being a prick about the whole thing.

  15. Security Flaws? on Firefox Continues Gains against IE · · Score: 2, Insightful

The recent discovery of a potentially damaging software flaw suggested the potential for FireFox attacks. Did that get fixed? Cuz if not, that'll be a problem in the future for firefox. One of the reasons people like firefox so much is the thought that "OOOH, now I don't have to worry about nasty viruses and hackers and evil things." Once there's a virus written for firefox, that little golden halo is gonna come crashing down.
