I don't think "Don't be evil" and "IBM" can be used in the same sentence. IBM is trying to place nice to get people to like them again. It is simply an evil way to trick you into thinking they are not evil. Who knows though. Perhaps they were at one point not evil and were simply pretending to be evil in order to get the bad boy admits on their side, and now are again going back to their non-evil ways. Personally I wouldn't trust them either way.
When you really get down to it most companies are not ethical. I don't find Dell to be any more ethical than any other computer company. They are out to make money, and that is about it. Sure they will tell you all these great things they do to help the world, but in reality it is all simply part of the companies marketing. Look at any company in the world and you will find some sort of unethical behavior. Simply part of the world we live in.

Dell Dumping Itanium

The Sun X2100 has SATA. The x4100 and x4200 have SAS which is the server version of SATA. If you want a cheap server then build your own. Personally I wouldn't but a SATA harddrive in my server...but that is just me. If you want to be cheap don't complain when things start breaking.
Of course they are trying to sell Solaris. That is called business. Did you expect them not to push their own software solutions? Just like IBM will try to switch you over to High-End PowerPC/AIX if you go with them, or HP will try to switch you to use Itanium. And they don't really need to sell you Solaris anymore as it is free. They give you the option to go with whatever OS you want. It is up to you to make that decision. Of course if you do not know what you are doing then you have a problem, but if you know all about hardware/os...etc then you should already know what you need.
How is Sun not honest? They give you the warranty prices and let you make the decision about which one you want. They don't assume you need a high level of warranty coverage like Dell. Seems pretty straightforward to me. I'm willing to bet good money that Suns standard support is of a higher caliber than anything Dell can offer with any of their support options. Have you tried calling Dell support anytime recently?
What Sun wants to make money on high-margin consulting services? That is crazy talk. I can't believe they would even try that play. Wait...you mean Microsoft, Dell, IBM, HP, Oracle....every other company in the world makes money off consulting services. Well, guess that was a smart move by Sun. Who cares if they make money off services contracts. If you don't need the extra service then don't pay for it. It is just that easy. Right now I'm paying 2k a year to Computer Associates for a service contract I've used maybe once in 5 years. Why? Because when you need that service it is worth the extra money spend. It is just like insurance. Can you guarantee that you'll never be in a car wreck? Can you guarantee your house will never burn down? Well, if so don't pay for insurance.
Why buy a Sun Opteron system? For all the reason you listed. Better performance, better price, and high quality/reliable systems. Oh, and yes for the brilliant engineering. These systems were built by Andy Bechtolsheim. Perhaps you have heard of him. He knows what he is doing. He co-founded Sun, worked at Cisco for 7 years building their gigabit networking gear, and was one of the first investors in Google. Google didn't even have a name when Andy invested his money in him. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andy_Bechtolsheim/
What systems are you trying? I got it installed on my old 6 year old HP Pavillion desktop with a 650Mhz P3. If it works on that system you should be able to get it working anywhere.
Well, say you are a large corporation that only buys from Tier 1 manufactures. Sure joe schmo can go get one from random white box corporation, but in the corporate world they stick to specific suppliers that they have contracts and provide 24/7 support.
Um, they are opteron servers. They run Windows/Linux fine, and any other OS that works on x86. In fact Sun now has a support contract that provides windows support.
There are not white boxes, they are in house boxes built from the ground up Andy Bechtolsheim. Supposedly sun is working on a 8 socket box...thus you could have 16 opterons cores running in one box. Very interesting future for Opteron and Sun.
Yes, when I build a 300 node system I really have the time to goto bestbuy and pick out parts. And if those parts break down...who knows if the company that originally made them will still be producing those parts. Guess I'll have to ebay for parts on my production server that is responsible for processing millions of transactions every hour.
If they have a study showing that AIX on PowerPC has the highest TOC of all the solutions, how is IBM supposed to sell you AIX on PowerPC after you realize Linux cannot do what you need?
This is the major difference. Apparently Linux people are cheap. Hardware cost for linux=$13,191. Solaris=$26,816, Windows=$23,242. So, really there is not much difference in TCO. Just that larger companies that use Solaris/Windows buy better servers.
They are comparing a x86 server with a SPARC server. That is where the increased cost is coming from. If they had comparied Solaris x86 on a AMD box I'm sure TOC would be much lower.
CS != HTML. Most CS programs don't teach anything about HTML. At least mine did not. Not anything against HTML just that it isn't all that important in the larger spectrum of CS.
Ok, problem here. Do you really think a large research institution or someone doing very sensitive important work is going to trust a grid of millions of desktops to process his work. How can he know that these systems are secure? With the Sun Grid you know the data is on the grid. Not on Barrys computer that has 500 viruses and hasn't been updated in 5 years.
Thanks for correcting me guys. Last I heard it was only on PC. Guess I missed some news the last few days. Nevertheless, it sounds like it is very hard to get to these using the Xbox/PS2. Guess Rockstar has some pretty pathetic programmers on their staff.
Why revoke the rating on the XBox/PS2. It is impossible to get to that content in these versions. Only way on the PC version is through a software patch. Sure the stuff is in there, but it isn't like Rockstar left this content open for anyone to access. I'm guessing this kind of stuff is more common in computer games than we even know. Just that this is the first one where someone was able to unlock that content.
Actually right now the job market for new graduates is the best in about 4 years. Granted now as great as the boom years, but most everyone I know is getting good jobs out of college. The average salary for a CS graduate is in the $50,000 range. Pretty decent for someone right out of college.
I have not seen any of my friends having trouble getting CS jobs. I got a job a semester before graduating. All my CS friends had jobs lined up before graduation. Just have to look at the right places. We are in the midwest so I'm sure it is easier to get a CS job here than on one of the coast. There are a lot of great tech companies inland that are always looking for people with tech skills.

Have you been watching soap operas again?
Yikes....look like someone brainwashed you real good! Ever try to innovate something on your own? Didn't think so.

Why would they stay with PA-RISC when HP is killing it off and killing of HP-UX as well.

They are going to mostly be Suns new opterons. They are simply using their inventory on the grids. Good way to burn-in those systems. :)
Sun partners with most of the big whigs in computing. I'm sure they get stuff for free or a very good price on licensing.

Suns standard Warranty is 3 years. So they will get great support in 3 years. I doubt they will need it though. Suns systems are very reliable.
