Because it goes against your personal belief? I call BS against you for thinking that a move that has significant statistical proof at preventing serious diseases, including AIDS should be discouraged. I don't think I need to provide links. The one thing the guy forgot to include in his questionnaire is that we always have the unspoken "opt out clause" which we may exercise at any time (tall building, 44, bottle of sleeping pills not included); and which many have already chosen to exercise even with our current paltry life span. I would chose forever and exercise the clause at my discretion.

Robert Heinlein touched on this aspect of long lives in Time Enough For Love when in the opening the other characters had to basically coerce, persuade, or trick the protagonist into another rejuvenation treatment to take him beyond his already 2000 year lifespan. In fact IIRC the effect of an extremely long life on the thoughts etc of the person living it are central to the whole, quite long (and very good) book. And the idea that the protagonist might be so bored with life after living 2000 years to consider or actively want to commit suicide is cast somewhat sympathetically (if in a crusty way typical with many of Heinlein's characters). Of course we're all glad when he chooses the longevity treatment again. If only for the fact that the book would end far too soon otherwise.

Couple that with the fact salt water freezes at lower than 0 C and that dramatic line this year, it's possible. If people remember the articles a month or so ago, about the very unusual complete surface melt over the surface of the Greenland ice sheet this summer, it also wouldn't be surprising. As far as salt water, I would think given the volume being diluted that the salinity isn't that much less (due to the melting ice), but it would be interesting to see what effect this major melt has on these levels. What does it take to stop the Atlantic conveyor (probably nowhere near that kind of level, but still)?

That said, I do believe man is responsible for much if not all of the environment change we're seeing, but I really hope that graph is a mistake. I find it somewhat scary. But given the Greenland melt event this year, plus the record high temperatures in the norther hemisphere this year, I think it is probably accurate. Let's hope this year is an anomaly because a change that great in one year is pretty drastic.

The lazy who just read the papers won't bother.

There is definitely some deranged ranting going on there, but most of it should fall under 'free speech'. We're all allowed to rant. (I say this even though I never do [extremely huge grin]. But there are also definitely some worrisome comments, like about sharpening the ax, and "I'm coming for you." And then one thing he says stands out in all its truthiness: "Do you know what the secret of the Marine Corps is? Tell people they are Heroes and they will act it out."

There's probably been less said by people who have gone out and shot up a shopping mall or campus, or movie theatre, or congresswoman. So I think they are right to be concerned. I can't fault them for wanting to talk to him. Arresting him maybe was over the top and feeds his psychosis too much much, but better safe than sorry,

Personally I think he's nuts and should be forced to get treatment. We don't give kids under a certain age the option of not getting treatment for many things including mental disease. Why? Because they don't have the reasoning power to know what's best often... it's why we evolved to have long childhoods, there is a lot to learn and it gives us that time. Why then should an adult who is obviously less able to make rational judgments than many children not also be forced to get treatment? Because they're adults? Liberals have their misguided reasons on this although I think it is crueller to let them live in their psychosis than to help them out of it. And for the conservatives who go with it, it is usually because they know it saves tax dollars using an excuse, they're adults they can make their own decisions... nice full circle there, and as a bonus saying they agree with the liberals on some things. That's my conspiracy theory of the day.

Maybe it's because it's natures distilled water it might not have enough impurities in it to conduct. Pure water is a pretty good insulator. And at the relatively low voltage of most of the circuit board aside from power couplings (including the socket, but even that is fairly low voltage), it might not be enough to short out with rain water. That would be my guess.

At a research smelter (only 6 megawatts... enough to be commercial size for some metals) I helped commission and run, we used deionized water as coolant in the electrical buses. The electrical buses we used went to the cathode and anode of the arc furnace. The ones to the anode were far larger. The power/current load is so high that wire can't carry the load and you use buses. We went up to six megawatts and 20,000 amps of DC power (using DC instead of AC was part of the research). Normally commercial arc furnaces use AC power, but they still use buses to connect the furnace to the power supplies. It is pretty much the default at any smelter of this size and bigger (and even smaller).

Electrical buses for a multimegawatt arc furnace (multiple buses went to each of the cathode and anode) look like connected lengths (end to end) of 2 x 12s, but made out of solid copper. Solid that is, except for water pathways down the middle to keep them cool. We had a several hundred thousand dollar dionizing system just for the bus water. Kept in a cabinet 7 feet high by 5 by 5 feet. Dionized as much as possible to make sure there was as little conductivity as possible in the water, but also to ensure there was no scaling and unintentional theremal insulation in the channels (coolant can't efficiently cool the copper if there is scale there). But if scaling were the only issue, there are better alternatives than water. But electrical insulating properties was also highly important.

I also remember doing some other engineering experiements in a different place where we actually had to add impurities to some water we needed to use to measure... something. But that was so freakin' long ago I can't remember anything except being pissed because whatever we were doing didn't work because the water was insulating some current. It might have been affecting some kind of meter, but who knows.

Working on these projects, testing new engineering designs at size, was kind of like Mythbusters every day. Cool job. Just not enough of them around to be able to rely on. Eventually had to get a 'real' job where getting contracts or employment was/is more assured.

And you hit a key point. XP worked and does work. It worked from the beginning. Vista was crippled by know it all GUI designers who choked on their own fumes because they had their heads up their asses too long when designing things like UAC. Anyway, does it work or not? That is the number one point for business. If it works it wins. If you have two competing pieces, say Windows XP and Apple whatever, it doesn't matter how cool one or the other is (according to fans), to business it matters if it works. And once that is settled, the cheaper of the two wins.

A lot of people like to cut up Windows but the fact is, it does work solidly. And for a competitive price. It can't crash and get fucked up as bad as some say (at least not in offices/businesses, and not in a way that impacts the bottom line too badly), otherwise businesses would get rid of it. No, paying to have someone to blame is not the reason. Having someone to blame doesn't bring money in. Having working equipment does. Having someone you pay who is accountable and who won't get paid again if they don't solve problems does help make money. Getting something for free and not ever being sure something will be fixed doesn't make money. Paying 4 times what you need to pay on the cool product is a loser too. Especially once enough of the cool products sell to be a profitable target for malware makers.

No, Windows XP isn't really sexy, but it works, and it runs business software like no tomorrow. Windows 7 works even better. And as far as that goes, I thought Window 2K worked pretty damned good too. Now they hired the same hycrapsia victims to design the interface for 8 as they did for Vista. Hey, we can't use some retarded UAC to make people insane, let's dumb it down so we (the GUI designers) might be able to use it; who cares if the rest of the world aren't as stupid as us? Ah, marketing + graphic artist + pop psychology courses makes GUI designer from hell. They need to get interface designers who understand the real world and not just some abstract thing they got from university and inward focused "industry conferences". And as a bonus they should fire the president. The place has done nothing but go downhill since he took over. Ballmer not Oballmer.

Thieves aren't gentle when they break in. The thieves will likely do some extra trashing since they're pissed an alarm went off (know over a TV, smash a plate glass window, etc.). And likely the thieves will get away with a ton because the police know that 95% of all alarm calls are false alarms and wait for the alarm company to try to call you first to determine if it is a real break in, and then they call the police. So the thieves know they actually have enough time to gather stuff up, drink one of your beers (or two), have a shit in your toilet and not flush it (or on your carpet), and then fuck off with the loot and not get caught.

??? == lose money. Nice try.

Better idea: get an alarm from a real company (brinks, adt, etc) and put their sticker on the door. Or just get one of their stickers and put it on the door.
