I suppose this spike in downloads is not at all related to the fact that a new version of firefox just came out. Perhaps IE security did play a part. My guess is that any part would have been very small.

Half the windows users don't even patch their systems. Why should they worry about an insecure browser?

Oh please there are much more important things for people in education to focus on then some planet hundreds of light years away. What practical reason would they have for teaching (what little they know) about the contants of a planet's atmosphere in another galaxy.

In this case you have a kid, who paid to see a movie, that is making a video tape. You have NO proof of intent to distribute or anything else. So you have someone, that already paid to see it, that is making a copy. Show me the harm in that.

The kid paid for a one time viewing, nothing more.

The fact is that it's illegal to copy the movie in this fashion. Just because you don't see the point of a law doesn't mean that the law doesn't apply to you. I'm sick and tired of these posts where people basically say the law doesn't apply to them because they don't like it. Newsflash. It doesn't work that way.

Perhaps a cripled version of OSX might give x86 users a taste and an incentive to go to apple hardware as well. Who knows. I finally caved and bought a powerbook.

And what happens if it is the other way around. What if the cars have 27% more accidents? Do they raise the insurance of everyone whose car has this feature? But then you have people who have the feature on the car and don't use it and it becomes a driver safty issue and not a car feature.

I'm not arguing one way or another. I'm not even sure the above is coherent. I just think there's a long way to go before this is accepted.

I think it will be a while before it takes off in the states if it ever does. The biggest problem (assuming that it works correctly) is Insurance companies. Whose fault would it be if your car hit another car or person while it was automatically parking? Will insurance companies increase your rates just because you have this feature in your car?

This just seems like a huge can of worms that will take a lot of time (and law suits) to sort out.

I think the premise here is rediculous.

That being said, I don't see a problem with a company owning rights to the DNA. After a company spends millions of dollars to develop genetically superior modified wheat, they should have the rights to do whatever they want with it.

If it is completely open source, once they create it, everyone will have the right to produce this wheat and the company will get no profit from their investment. If there is no profit, they will have no incentive to do the R&D and it will never get made. The "closed-sourcenes" will encourage innovation.

Perhaps the best way would be in the middle somewhere, like they do with drugs. The company has exclusive rights for a certain number of years then other companies can make generic versions.
