  1. Increase in violent games, decrease in murder rate on Grand Theft Auto Led Teen to Kill · · Score: 0

The murder rate in this country has fallen precipitously. In the 1980's more people were killed in Washington DC each year than in Beirut and Northern Ireland combined. No one can explain the big decrease in murders in the US, but over the same period the number and intensity of violent games has increased. Young men, the primary killers in all societies the world over, usually get into trouble because they are bored.

The reviews the game mags did were all bogus. If a game came from a major publisher - it got a favourable review, even if it wouldn't run for more than 5 minutes without crashing. The only games that they would ever can were independents because they didn't offer advertising bucks.

The CSM is the only independent newspaper left that does real reporting. If you want to know what is really happening in Afghanistan or Iraq go to the CSM, then again I doubt that most of you are really that curious. The brutal wisdom of the real world doesn't fit well with the easy coastal Academnic Philosophies. The CSM is a solid newspaper, maybe the only really independent newspaper left.

  14. Part of the Problem is the Hardware on Why Programming Still Stinks · · Score: 0

A poster above state one part of the problem: you have to give the computer explicit, detailed instructions to get it to do anything useful. Using a non-procedural language doesn't change this fact, because the other part of the problem is that the machine is a procedure machine. All modern CPUs are Von Neuman machines, they work by proceeding from one instruction to the next unless they encounter a branch. On this type of machine it will always be possible for a single error to bring the whole system down. With programmable "hardware" it may well become possible to start building machines that are partially non-procedural, but the Von Neuman architecture actually works - so it won't be going away anytime soon.
