IANAP either, but time doesn't "strech" like space does. The dilation of time only happens under extremem gravitational fields. Remember that "standing still" in a gravitational field (i.e. standing on the surface of the earth) is the same thing as accelerating from a GR point of view. Does time dilate for the space shuttle when it takes off? No. And the gravitational waves that these labs are set up to detect are much more faint than the Earths gravitational field.
Are you saying it's off-line EVERY NIGHT from 12-4?
I work for a bank and we have black-out periods about once a month
to perform regular maintenance. This usually only occurs early Sunday mornings
when ATM and online banking is at it's lowest utilization.
They have to market it to specialized industries first because they're the only ones that can justify the expense. In the log run the price will come down and business execs will want these just so the can have the convenience of a laptop without the weight/size. It's semi-uable on a plane, and you just put it in a dock at work or home.
First off, that was one hell of a rant... a good one!
IANAP[hysicist]
really? you could have fooled me! (Note: there was no sarcasm in that statement.)
The OMEGA EP will probably allow scientists here to examine Unruh and Hawking radiation in the laboratory
I have no idea what Unruh is but I do know that Hawking radiation is only generated at the event horizon of black holes. Does your lab plan on creating mini-black holes in the lab?!?!?
Congratulations to Jason Scott for this amazing accomplishment. There is a lot of history and nostalgia in his documentary that would have been lost otherwise.
this strike anyone else as being a bit like "Let them have broadband!"
I'm not sure you entirely understand the meaning and context of this quote.* If the upper elite of society were enjoying streaming video from their 10MBps fiber connection, it would be a more apt paraphrase to say "Let them have AOL dial-up." (i.e. expensive, slow, and like the "cake" that the bakers of the time threw out, not much use to anyone.)
*Cake in the Antoinette quote refers to the flour mixture bakers lined their oven with at the beginning of the day and scraped off and threw into the street at the end of the day (when it was pretty much burned to a crisp an inedible.) Also, Antoinette, if she actually said it, was being glib, repeating the phrase ver-batim from a popluar book of the day...don't remember the book though.
In the same vein, I'd like a button that tells them "This is the dumbest commercial I've ever seen...I will never buy this product and you need to fire your Ad agency."
The external fuel tank burns up in the atmosphere after launch. They are never reused or AFAIK even recovered. The external fuel tank on the pad now, and every part in it, is brand new.

This sucks. If they're going to let you download them for free they should let you redistribute them...as long as it's for free of course.

It's an awesome mag. The amount of detail on how to build a project is fantastic, and there's lots of small projects in addition to the two or three large projects. The editors don't mince words about telling you how to hack stuff either. The latest copy had instructions to remove macrovision on certain DVD players.
So if I get my hands on this, it's not going to run on my Athlon? Is it the Intel chip-set it's looking for (i.e. built in drivers for it...) or is it something in the instruction set on the processor?
Yahoo Calendar rocks. I can access it from home and work (two different computers), it will sync up with my Palm (although the sync is a little kludgey), has a to-do list, etc., and the calendar sends me a text message (via an email address) to my cell phone to remind me of appointments.
Way fricken cool. I'll never go back to a non-web based calendar.
try again.....
c += c++ + ++c
c = c + (c+1)+(c+1)
the increment operator (++) takes
precedent over addition (+).
So the parser (should) created the second
formula above.
I was about to ask "Wasn't using SSN as student ID numbers outlawed?" but obviously it isn't.
My second year of college (1989) is when my university switched from SSN to 6 digit numbers. I thought all colleges did that in the early 90's.

I also heard that the mirror will be precision ground by the CCA.
If the modder had read the parent this wouldn't have been mod'ed offtopic!
My blind ambition is....

If this isn't news for nerds I don't know what is.....
Don't mod funny. The parent is correct...I heard it too and wanted to kick his ass.
He must have done it...
I've already found about 5 different copies...
OR
Damn! I was wondering why I could never find the codec for that file.

Well, it's probably an irregular verb anyway.
