Goddamn. The things people do to run Windows... It makes me glad I use Linux.
Oh come on, lets not be hypocritical here. I seriously doubt anyone can say they've done a fresh install of *distro-of-choice* and not spent some time tweaking things to get their system into a fully usable state.
Everyone does it, and just because one person has to install a firewall and another person has to hunt down drivers doesn't make either person superior to the other. Yeah I know, this is slashdot, where "Windows sux and Linux rulez", but if we're going to be asking serious questions we might as well be giving serious answers.

Myself, I use KPF and AVG, with AdAware on the side. Fortunatly, these three programs don't have much to do, thanks to Firefox and my cheap yet trusty DI-604 router. I'm actually going to be putting together a box for my parents this weekend too, so i've been busy loading up my USB flash drive with some of the aforementioned programs, and other first boot goodies. And if i'm lucky, my parents will turn over custody of their old computer (an aging P3-500) to me, which I hope to turn into my very first Linux box to muck around on. Then i'll get to experience the numerous pains-in-the-ass of both worlds! Should be fun. :)
  3. We're we playing the same game?? on MMORPG Circle of Life · · Score: 1

Whoa guys, hang on here. I was in the beta too, and in my not so humble opinion, E&B SUCKED. Every single aspect of it was little more than a poorly disguised leveling treadmill. Combat was utterly worthless... fly to target, use special ability A B or C, set most powerful weapon to autofire, wait until someone dies. Dogfighting? What's that? Hell, space wasn't even 3D - it was a flat plane with about 15 feet of vertical space before your ship magically leveled off - so you couldn't even manuver if you wanted to (Not that it actually did anything gamewise, mind you). Trading? Nonexistant. Apparently 100 years in the future the market is 100% stable. Prices never change, supply never dwindles or overfills... leaving a handful of "most profitable runs" for your trading ships to run over and over and over until you're ready to puke. Mining was no better. Float up to rock, zap the rock, see whats inside, pull out the good stuff... move on to next rock. Last and least was exploration, which was no more than a glorified game of connect the dots. See a "?" on your map? Fly to it for 50 exp. Repeat for every tiny little insignificant fucking node rock and planet in every system everywhere. Congrats, you're exploring! Its stuff everyone else knows about and can see on their map, but technically its new to you! Wow! Oh, i'm sorry, I forgot about the "hidden" nodes. Yeah, those were fun. Fly 10,000km off the beaten path in the hopes of finding something cool, only to find a lot of sweet fuck all. Woo. I found more 'hidden' and 'secret' shit by accidentally stumbling into it while chasing space monsters than actually roaming around looking for stuff. Not that any of it was worth anything other than the one-time 200xp bonus. Yippie.

I'm sorry, I really tried to like the game but it was just so horribly executed. Sure, the universe was big and there was a lot of stuff to see, but everything you did was so horribly wafer thin it couldn't possibly hold my attention for more than a few minutes.

The only previous comment here i'll agree with was the looks. E&B did have its moments... I'll always remember the first time I visited the Saturn sector and saw a huge rainbow of rocks (saturns rings) reflecting sunlight back at me. That was freaking awesome. Unfortunatly it wasn't the most beautiful space MMORPG i've ever seen... that honour goes to Jumpgate. While on the whole it was shorter on visuals, the most stunning thing i'd ever seen was the Pulsar sector (I think thats what it was called... it was in the very center of the map and had HEAVY flux activity). Flying into this thing was like swimming in a rainbow. I was utterly amazed at the time.

Otherwise though, I don't really see what you guys are talking about. Leveling up and creating your ship fell right into the same old RPG trap of "good, better, best" (Diablo 2 anyone?) where you were worthless if you didn't have the 'perfect' setup. The insides of bases were spartan, to say the least. What were they, three, maybe four rooms? Sprinkle a couple of NPCs and some mission terminals around, then fill the place with players madly rushing from one NPC or mission terminal and back to their ship. To me it looked more like a feedlot than the insides of a space station. And as for ballance... I dunno, maybe it got better as things went on, but in the beta at least, they could never get the damn game right. First, everyone uses lasers because they rock. Then lasers get nerfed, everyone loves missiles. Missiles get nerfed, everyone's using projectiles. We just went around and around and around from one "best" to the next, there wasn't ever a sense of ballance.

Maybe i'm just a cranky old bastard today (quite possible)... but of what I remember from the E&B beta it was a good idea, horribly executed. I'm not an MMO fan by any stretch of the imagination though, so maybe there are people out there who really did like it. I found it far too thin on substance for my liking though. Even a great story can't hold me for long if the gameplay is the equivalent of dining on cardboard.

    But hey, thats just me.

    Cheers.

    Enlight Interactive - X2: The Threat, Seven Kingdoms 1 & 2, Warlords Battlecry 3
    Framework Studios - Crap
    GamerBlitz - Crap
    Gameware Development - Creatures
GarageGames - Crap, other than the Torque engine licenses
Global Software Publishing - Crap (educational/kids games)
Interplay - Fallout, Freespace... oh hell, does it matter? Aren't these guys bankrupt anyways? Their website doesn't even fucking work, who cares!
Kuma Reality Games - Some AA wannabe called Kumawar
    Legacy Interactive - Crap
Max Gaming - Crap (Moon Tycoon anyone?)
O-3 Entertainment - Crap (GTA wannabe)
Riverdeep (aka Broderbund) - Crap (educational)
    Skunk Studios - Crap
Vivendi Universal Games - AvP 2, Bard's Tale, CS:Z, Crash Bandicoot, Half-Life series, LOTR, NOLF 1 & 2, Simspons Hit n Run, SWAT 3 & 4, Diablo series, DAoC, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, Middle-Earth Online, WoW, Ghost Master, Empire Earth series, Ground Control series, Homeworld 2
Atari Inc - Civilization series, Driver series, Deer Hunter series (groan), Independence War, RollerCoaster Tycoon, Unreal Tournament series, Enter the Matrix, Wheel of Time, Unreal 2, Moo3, NWN series, Mechwarrior 3

So the only 'real' publishers they have are Atari (kinda), VUG, and Eidos. Add Interplay if they aren't actually dead yet (again? still? whatever). Codemasters, Enlight, and Dreamcatcher might be capable of publishing something decent too, I suppose.

All things considered though, it isn't a very impressive lineup. Their three big names are heavily into other consoles - I suspect their involvment here is just a continuation of their diversification strategy. So the chances of Phantom having a big hit/exclusive (Halo, Mario, etc) are pretty much nil. I mean, unless the Phantom intends to corner the market on educational software, i'm guessing this little ghosty is gonna get pounded into a very, very small niche by the competition.
But we'll see. I intend to sit back and watch the fireworks, whatever they may be. :)

Actually, you're not supposed to have sex underwater. Its fine for the guy, but keep in mind that a girl's plumbing wasn't really designed to be plumbing. Pushing too much water up inside her with too much force could cause damage to sensitive things like her fallopian tubes. And even if you go at it gently, there's the risk of literally flooding her. Get enough water up the fallopian tubes and it could pass through the infundibulum abdominal ostium - meaning she gets water in her abdominal cavity, which could very likely give her a nasty infection. Either way there's a risk of illness/injury, permanent damage (infertillity?), or possibly even death (your trick moves aren't so sexy when they cause internal bleeding).

So by all means, get hot and steamy under the waves, but when you're gonna introduce her port to your hard drive, you should probably do it on the beach (or dock or poolside or whatever). Remember kiddies, interfacing safely isn't just about using a latex firewall!

It's one of the two extensions I consider critical to my 'Zilla browsing experience (the other one being All-in-One Gestures, because mouse gestures are, to quote a friend, "teh fucking pwn")
Lemmy start a small laundry list of TBE's perks though:

-Single window mode (EVERYTHING opens in a new tab)
-Drag & Drop tab rearranging (its just common sense)
-Undo close tab (possibly the BEST feature of the entire extension. I use it daily)
-Modifyable tab bar (move it around, scroll it, make it double layered, etc)
-Customized tab behavior for new links (hypertext/bookmarks/history/javascript/external apps/etc: choose if they open a new window, tab, or load in an existing one. Very nice for steamlining your browsing experience.)
    -Tab grouping (including pretty colours!)
-Tab locking (lock a tab to a specific page)
    -Auto reloading of tabs

I could go on and on... TBE is like everything AND the damn kitchen sink (which is why some people seem to have a seething hatred of it). Really though, would it kill Mozilla to add just a few of the more popular features? I know extensions are supposed to be this big, grand, wonderful idea, but I think a LOT more people (especially average joe's) would be appreciative rather than pissed off to have a couple more handy dandy features. You've got to remember that if you want your browser to go mainstream, its got to have a bit of a "smack you in the face" slant for all the little old ladies and joe-sixpacks out there that aren't gonna spend an hour sifting through the extension library. See, this is EXACTLY where Republican USA and Liberal Canada differ. In Canada, the penal system is not about ridding the world of murders and rapists, or locking people away forever. Yes, it is a punishment and a deterrent, but it's those things with the hope - nay, expectation - of reform. I think you'll find Canadians (and many other parts of the world for that matter) will agree that making a productive member of society out of a troublemaker is far better than just locking them away forever. If it's ever at all nessecary to remove someone from the general populace, it should be done with the expectation that they can be rehabilitated and reintroduced, safely, back into the public. Sure, in some extreme cases, this process might take a very long time if it ever happens at all, but the possibility is almost always there. Maybe its something in the water, but generally, ours is a society that believes in second chances. How can you justify seizing ultimate power over someone elses life? Just because a book or a rule somewhere says you can? If murder is really one of the ultimate sins against society, what makes it acceptable for the same society to turn around and weild it as a weapon or tool? Surely there are alternate methods that could be persued, rather than just exterminating troublesome members of society.

Not that i'm a Liberal Canadian myself, mind you. I'm actually more right-wing than anything (which is still tame by American standards), but I just wanted to offer an alternative viewpoint. I'd actually agree with you on the case that this guy probably should have been given more jailtime. I don't think that gives anyone the right to use him as a slave though.
