What i don't understand is this. Redhat 6??? When did that come out? Back in probably 1999 or something. How about we compare that, to the number of security holes in Windows 98, or NT4. As operating systems mature, holes disappear (sometimes) and new ones reappear. But it is unfair to compare newer software to older software.
Any good links on how to go about disabling/uninstalling nautilus and using a different file manager?
I'd agree that I hate nautilus. It's slower than piss on my machine (850Mhz). Windows never was all that slow, even winxp. That's the one thing I wish I could change about Gnome. Nautilus sometimes just takes forever to load things properly.
Once the MP3 file is saved to your hard drive, how exactly does it "deteriorate after awhile"?????
So all files stored on a HD, "deteriorate after awhile". That must be why all OSes just suddenly "stop working" huh?
Granted, you have lossy compression, but after it's compressed, it's done, it doesn't "deteriorate" any further.
Actually, in Swordfish, IIRC, one of the hacker's from the beginning of the movie was named "Linus Torvalds." It was hard to make out the name, but that's exactly what it sounded like.
I think that to have Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V implemented though would be awesome. I started w/ Command-C, Command-V on a Mac 15 years ago, then moved to Windows and used Ctrl-C, V, and then in linux now, I can't guarantee that it will work. I think that there is nothing wrong with having something that is more in line with what everyone "knows".
I've read through a good chunk of the replies here, and I keep coming across people saying "well you can change icons like this", "or do a splash screen like that." etc. The problem is, is that 90% of the computer users simply want to install, and be done with it and see nothing but a desktop icon. They don't want to go changing icons, or splash screens, or whatever. That's what this author is trying to get at. He makes a good point about the computer geeks and their clever naming, etc. It seems as if programmers have this holier-than-thou attitude. "If you don't like something, you should change it yourself or not use it." I know that it is a hobby to most people and there is no commercial gain to be had. It's almost like OSS (or whatever you want to call it) is like old school punk rock. You want the recognition, but you always fear being called a sellout. In the software world, you want to have this really great piece of software that is free and takes over the world and throws Microsoft off its pedestal. But at the same time, you don't want to conform to the game they are playing. Yes, people often don't know about non-MS ways of doing things on a computer, but Microsoft has done a halfway decent job at making a computing experience consistent to the average Joe computer user. And so people come to expect that out of others. I personally am willing to do things a slightly harder, or different way. I know that when I use free software, that things may be a little quirky, or there may be some weird fixes that I have to implement to get it work all the way. I've made that choice, but there are many out there who won't/can't/don't make it. They just want it to work out of the box for a million years without a hitch.
I believe that Americas Army: Operations was built on the UT2k3 engine before the actual game was out. And that seemed like a fairly realistic/non-scifi game.
The one thing GIMP needs to fix....

I just want to be able to hit backspace or delete to clear a selected area, instead of Ctrl+K, which to me, could mean "Klear" but it's just hard to remember that when delete or backspace is worlds more intuitive.
I wonder if use of a Philips screwdriver violates the DMCA? The modification involves removing a tab in the printer that matches a slot in the cartridge casting. I suppose this could be considered a digital rights management device.
Hmm....let's see. Things that are DRM circumvention devices...
1. Sharpie Markers
2. Phillips Head Screwdrivers
Guess we'll have to keep a running tab and make sure we aren't in possession of any of these "illegal" devices.
I say it is NVIDIA! See, the way I figure is that they are pretty POed that their game performs shitty in HL2, so to "get back" at Valve and everything Gabe has said (which seems like the truth), they release his little pride and joy into the wild.
I believe ur wrong...otherwise "gnumeric" as in one of the gnome calculators would be pronounce "guh-numeric" instead of "numeric" where the latter would make much more sense.
lol...pronouncing "gnu" as "new" is actually the correct way to say it. I was talking to someone who was saying "guh-new" and i was like "I believe it's 'new'". He said "Nope, 'guh-new' like the animal." If you check websters....it's pronounce "new"
That hardware detector has come in handy multiple times for me b/c i'm a linux n00b. But, i am curious which services are uneeded. I know that i will be disabling PCMCIA, b/c i don't have a slot for that. But you are correct about RH, load times blow. Is there any list of what all the different services do so I can determine what I need and don't need?
Also, ntsyv looks kinda like Unix "System V" that one company who will rename nameless has. AHH!! They're in kahootz w/ one another.;-)
Yeah, it's amazing that these kids were allowed unsupervised access to this game. I know that my stepmom picked up this game for my 12yr old brother a year ago. She knew what the game was about, and made the choice to let him play. That's fine by me. The stores on the otherhand know exactly what this game is about b/c it is so extreme in some instances. It's probably one of the few video games you are actually "carded" for. The people at the store made sure my stepmom knew what she was buying and were shocked it was for my bro. But, I do know this, he's played GTA and he loves it. Also, he's not about to go out and start killing all these people, having sex with hookers, selling drugs, stealing cars, and running from cops. As previous people stated, I've played Doom since 12/13-ish, and lots of FPS's since then. My brother has played games I considered more "violent" at an earlier age than me and he's doing pretty damn well right now. It's just a personal thing. If these kids are dumbshits enough to go out to a freeway and start shooting guns at cars, they obviously have bigger problems than this video game. In a way it could be compared to kids that throw shit at passing cars, which happens a lot, except in a more extreme way of course (and none of these activities do I condone)
You ever look at that hole that is at the top of your controller and wonder what it is for? That's for a memory card buddy. Being that it is slot shaped, I'd have to say that's a memory card slot

You've got a few too many steps there for ./'ers
Their business plan should be
1. Create Player
2. Create Software
3. ....
4. PROFIT!!! :-D

All I know is those bastards better not call me on my cellphone, especially since I registered it on the DNC list.

Also, dont' forget to mention the whole September 11 thing in 2001 that sent our economy into a tailslide. Yeah...that was his fault. pffft
