  1. Re:If only people wanted to go...? on Europa's Acid Ice Fields · · Score: 3, Interesting

IIRC, you can use a catalyst to crack peroxide into steam and O2. And I know SA is like the 'Mister Log' of chemicals; but I am pretty sure it can be made to exothermically react with water. ['NEVER pour water into concentrated SA' warnings, et al.]
    . . .
Anyone chemically-enabled out there do the math and figure out how much output you get from it?

Hydrogen peroxide will be decomposed by ... well, just about anything. Fine metal powder, maybe activated charcoal, organic solvents, etc. The most obvious catalyst for H2O2 decomposition is light, which is why commercially-distributed bottles of the stuff are brown. Heating it above 80 C or so will also do the trick. So that part ought to be easy.

    The decomposition happens to be exothermic, giving off about 98 kJ per mole of H2O2 decomposed. (Standard heat of formation of O2 (g) = 0 kJ/mol, of H2O (l) = -286 kJ/mol, and of H2O2 (l) = -188 kJ/mol.)

The heat of solution of sulfuric acid is -95 kJ/mol, so you'll get 95 kJ per mole of sulfuric acid you can put in solution. (1 mol H2SO4 is about 98 g.) Of course, that heat of solution is assuming that you have pure liquid H2SO4. If it's already in solution, the heat production is dramatically reduced.

Whether or not that kind of energy is enough for your purposes... depends on what you want to do with it. There's certainly a more efficient method.

At least Yahoo was nice enough to let you know when they're going to start spamming, and to remind you to check to make sure you've selected all 70001 of the "no" radio buttons. At least they didn't change their policy or your preferences without telling you.

Automatically killing anyone who sends you an e-mail mentioning "marketing communications" (insert other euphemisms for spam here) is probably not a good reflex. Some of them, like Yahoo!, might actually have some ethics.

Yesterday I was at a Gamestop, and I saw a demo N-Gage machine. I put my GBA into sleep mode so I could go make fun of the N-Gage. I tried to turn it on and play a game or do something, but the machine wasn't working.

The guy at the counter said it hadn't worked for a couple weeks, and he knew what was wrong but there was really no point in fixing it. We had a good laugh.

Many of my friends seem to be mysteriously experiencing a severe trauma to the head after beating me in multiplayer games. I can't imagine what's causing it, but on an unrelated note I've gotten very good at using controllers as projectiles.

Nokia has been marketing the N-Gage as a gaming machine and not as a smartphone. Even if it is a good phone, it's not a good gaming device, and so people shy away from it.

My primary concern about the N-Gage's capacity as a handheld game machine is that the battery life is so short you probably wouldn't want to leave it on while you drive and play at stoplights.

  10. Re:updated music ok, but what about updating graph on Capcom To Release Mega Man Anthology · · Score: 1

The graphics for the first 6 games were all very good, and I don't think they really need updating. In fact, the only graphics change to Mega Man himself came in Mega Man 5, and involved adding vents to the back of his helmet (this changed three pixels and was only visible in two sprites), so clearly Capcom thought it looked alright.

Besides, as previously mentioned by many people, graphics updates for the Wily Wars on Genesis were disastrous and destroyed the quality of play. It just seemed that the newer, larger sprites got in the way.

Wait, but I thought the "window shades" were the "small silicon squares" ... so how can they focus the rays onto themselves? That paragraph makes it sound like the solar cells are capturing much more light than they ought to.
