Ever notice that if you boot up XP and imediately log in you will not have an IP address? I am not sure if this is a default setting. I think MS did this to make the boot times appear faster. Usually , the first thing I do after booting up a computer is open up a browser. I don't think you can consider any computer today as fully booted until the TCP/IP stack is fully operational.
"Seriously, I'm teaching myself Japanese now, and you have no idea how frustrating it is to learn that one word can have MANY different meanings, all based on context, and there are no hard rules as to how its used"
That sounds pretty cool... Oh wait I don't want to confuse you with words that have different meanings based on context.
Silly troll. Ever live in the US and UK? Well, I have. Yes petrol/gas is more expensive in the UK. But Computers are a little less expensive over in the UK. As far as products go..Some things are cheaper in the US and some things are cheaper in the UK. You really can't just compare a U.S. salary figure and a U.K. salary figure. In fact you can't even compare a UK salary figure to a euro salary figure. The Dutch guys I worked with were making 60-70K euros compared to the 30-45K GBP.
I used to work in the London for a little while. I was amazed at the difference in salaries as compared to the US. However, after a while I realized some things.
1. In the US a worker has to provide for their own retirment. We have to invest in 401ks and Roth IRA's. Some people in the US still have pensions. However, pensions are starting to get rare.
2. Interest rates on home loans are lower in the UK. A 5% interest rate in the UK is considered high. In the US a 5% interest rate for a home loan just doesn't happen. Unless you get a 15 year mortgage. For example the average 30 year home loan is at the historic lows around 5.7 %.
3. In the UK you do not have to pay for health care. In the US we have to pay for medical insurance. If you want real good insurance you can be looking at USD 200/ month.
4. In the UK a worker is guaranteed 20 days holiday. Most of the people I worked with in the UK had around 30 days. In the US we get 10 days. If you are getting 15 days in the US. It usually means you have been with the company for a while or are a manager.
5. The UK has much better public transportation than the U.S. In the UK I could take a train, bus or tube to work or shopping. In the U.S you need to have a car unless you are living in a massive city like New York or Chicago. Even after converting from GBP to USD, paying for a zones 1-6 travel card was still cheaper than owning a car in the U.S.
What makes it even worse is that our tax dollars are being used to subsidize gas. That's why gass in the US is cheaper than in other places in the world. So the tax payer is also helping pay for the gas that the Hummers burn through. Talk about welfare for the rich.
It doesn't really matter if Osama had U.S backing. The U.S. should never have been financing and empowering the ultra religous mujahideen. Have you ever seen pictures of Kabul back in the 1970's. Kabul looked like a western city. Kabul now looks like a 12 century village. All because our government wanted to humilate the Soviet Union.
The maintanance of any Government comes at a price. Why do you think Iraqi's serverd in Sadam's Army? The fact is the majority of people sign up for the military as an economic means. In the US it is usually because they did not have the means to get into college or the military was their best bet at a good career. I was lucky enough to be able to afford university. I don't want to see our soldiers placed in harms way when it is not a matter of national security. Our military does protect this nation. However, as citizens it is our duty to protect our soldiers from hidden political/financial agendas. In hindsight, do you believe that Vietnam was worth even 1 american life? Unfortunately, most people only care that they have a job and not that we have soldiers dieing daily in Iraq.
Also, there are a lot of ex-military that were against the Iraq war. For example, my father in-law served as an Arabic linquist in the middle east for the Air Force in the 80's and 90's and was against the war. However, he never tries to act like society owes or should respect him for serving in the military as you did in your post.
Try to explain to a widow that lost her family due to U.S bombs in the name of "freedom". Especally since we are wrapping their villages in barbed wire.
If your neighbor is beating his wife. You are not allowed to go over and capture the husband and accidentaly kill one of their children. You can not just make up your own law. You call the proper authorities. In the case of Iraq. The U.N. is the proper authorities. I have supported the U.S./U.N. actions in the past, 1st Gulf war, Kosovo, and Somalia. I would have also supported this Gulf War if the U.N. was involved. However, the U.N. realised that Iraq did not have WMD and did not have a military capable of projecting force on it's neighbors. Iraq was contained. By ignoring the U.N. The U.S had broken several international laws and has set a precedent that other countries can just ignore international law. If we were really so worried about freedom for Iraq we would never have supported Saddam back in the 80's. I like freedom and will stand up for any one's rights. However, I can not lie to my self and justify that this war was done in the interests of the Iraqi Oil....I mean people.
"If you really want socialism, move to France or Sweden, and let us know how much happier you are after you're gone."
I lived in Europe for a couple of years and I was quite happy. After coming back to the U.S. I feel a lot less free. If it weren't for my family and love for the town that I grew up in, I would move back to Europe. I also now notice that a lot of Americans are under the impression that America is the only free country in the world and that the rest of the world is backwards and not as advanced.
"Why should I pay to make their lives more quiet? I didn't contribute to the problem. Why should I pay for the solution? You want to live there, fine, you pay for it. "
Taxes should provide solutions that better a society and that are not able to be accomplished by individuals. Did you go to a public school? I am sure there are a lot of rich people out there that don't want to pay for public education. After all they don't send their kids to public schools. Why should they pay for you're education?
Like them or hate them, but wasn't that the lesson Americans first learned on 9-11? It seems like most of the actions sense them are based upon that recognition. i.e. get them before they get us
Unlike the Shire, We Americans can't claim innocense. After all we are the worlds number 1 weapons producer and supplier.
You don't need oil to make plastics. Henry Ford made a plastic shell for a car back in the 1940's.
Oh by the way you can also make Bio-Diesel from Hemp. So what is the real reson this plant is illegal? You can't smoke hemp. At one time hemp was the nations number 1 cash crop, even bigger than King Cotton. I find it interesting that hemp is illegal just because it resembles a marijuana plant.
In Australia they have signs on the road every 50km or so saying "Drowsy Drivers Die". In other countries they have an alternative to keep them awake, called "scenery".
I have seen similar signs about drowsy drivers on the English motorways. Maybe these signs were imported by pommies:)
This Sony product looks great!! Just when I was about to finally buy a PDA, I thought of Apple. I would imagine Apple is going to get into this market soon. Anyone have any good info on Apple and possible PDAs in the pipeline?
So whats your point? There are certain stores that sell an item at almost no profit just to get customers in the door to buy other things. In the case of apple. It means that millions of songs being put out in the AAC format. Combine this with the iPod and iTunes and people in the windows world are using apple products. Makes it that much eaiser to lure people over to apple.
Most BSD's distro's are striped down in that fashion. It's just that linux includes every thing and the kitchen think. By the way, If you do install those GNU utilities make sure you put the GNU utilities behind the solaris utilities in the PATH. This is due to the fact that other solaris programs/scripts are sometimes dependent on the way the solaris utilities work.
In my experience the majority of Developers don't have an in depth knowledge of OS and Hardware performance. The System Administrators almost always have a much better understanding of OS performance. The majority of developers I have worked with are Java developers. Perhaps it is different for other languages. However, shouldn't this be under a Systems Admin category?
" Ummmm... Wouldn't you fry the motherboard by swapping a CPU when the computer's on?"
Think Enterprise environment and Big Iron, not desktop machines.
Thanks for the tip. I will check that out. However, I have seen it on XP at home and at work on different machines.
Ever notice that if you boot up XP and imediately log in you will not have an IP address? I am not sure if this is a default setting. I think MS did this to make the boot times appear faster. For the English.

Trains are so 1981. Trains were geek magnets back then. It seemed like everyone had trains back then. It would be nice to see a come back for trains.

Also called "Reaganomics," it's when you run up a deficit during times of an economic slump.
Yeah, the 1980's were such an economic slump.....

No, if we liberals had our way. Sadam would never have had U.S. support in the 1980's.

No, He probably is lying. It's called propaganda. You keep saying something with conviction and if people aren't informed they will believe it.
