This article is poorly thought out. The command line is exactly the same kind of tool that a GUI is. Something to simplify the human/computer interface. Even the text he speaks so fondly of is really only a symbolic representation for the benefit of humans. Text IS graphics. If the author really wants to speak the language of computers, he can use a much smaller keyboard to set his registers "high" or "low". Of course, an old 8088 would probably be all the computer he would ever need, and I don't think he would get much done.
On another note, the purpose in building these huge graphically intensive interfaces is not just to simplify human/machine interface, it's also to make computers worth interfacing. After all, most people would have no use for a command line only interface. Even for something as basic as a calculator or word processor, it would be extremely inefficient to try and use one without shortcuts and menus.
Finally, the idea that those without computer programming skills will be obsolete in the future is ridiculous. It is something like saying that those who are unable to build their own car will be obsolete in the future. I have never built a car, but I use one every day. I haven't had any trouble getting a job because of it...

If they truly feel "untold grief" then that's good. It means there is some vestige of a decent person left in there somewhere. They DESERVE to feel that way until they stop and find a different job. And if they can't find a different job, then they should become a panhandler, because that is ever so slightly more respectable.
Additionally, if anyone feels it necessary to reply to this regarding my "soldier" analogy in the first paragraph, please know I will dismiss you as a fool.
Perhaps, if Nokia plans on continuing the trend of High Feature/Low Quality phones, they should concentrate on making one with a smooth contoured design so that it will hurt less when I tell them to shove it up their ass.
51XX was the last good phone they made.
Yeah, obviously copyrights are more important than privacy. In fact, we should all have camera's installed in every room in our house, just to make sure no one is breaking the law. After all, we have nothing to hide right?.....

I will admit that some of the Nokia's I have owned have been "less than robust", but their user interface is by far the best. That is part of quality in my opinion.
What we need is Nokia useability with motorola ruggedness.. Most of the rest need to just go away. I own a Sanyo SCP-6200 which has an awesome form facter, but horrible interface.

OK, well, how about this. People are becoming less able to do a variety of things. The most successful people in our society are extremely specialized. Almost like cells one might say.
Say hypethetically you are an early pioneer in the American West. In order to survive, it is necessary for you to be able to a wide variety of things. Hunt, Fish, Build a Cabin, Farm, Repair Equipment, Mend Clothes, Use a Rifle, Fight Fires, I can go on and on... A person who couldn't do many things had a reduced chance of being succesful from a natural selection standpoint.
Now, Take an IS specialist. He works computers and networks all day. It's his role. His needs are met by other specialist. He does not grow his own food, he does not make his own clothes, he does not build his house. He is unable to reproduce without the help of a huge team of Specialist that help his wife deliver the baby.
If you look at the division of cells in the human body, you will find that all are specialized for specific task, and none are able to supply all of their own needs. They are dependent on other specialized cells to survive.
Now look at our society. We have specialist to supply our food, handle our waste products, manage reproduction. We have a "circulatory system" composed of roads and railways and shipping to distribute resources to all the "Cells". We have all sorts of means of electrical and radio communication to carry critical information where it needs to go (like a nervous system). We have law enforcement to handle threats (like an immunse system). I can go on and on, the analogy never breaks down. It is simply a matter of scale. Just because you are not "glued" to the person next to you does not mean you are not a cell.
I think instead of accusing me of being high, you should examine the possibility that you just didn't get it.
How about this. No one is interested in Sci-Fi, because Sci-Fi is about people facing the future, and in the real future, a person is not important (except maybe to themselves). We are slowely but surely becoming less independant creatures and more cells of the colony. We are merging into a super-organism that really doesn't care much about us... maybe it will read sci-fi.
