Nope, the Radeon 9000 Pro is unquestionably superior to the GeForce4 MX.. although how good the support or demand for either on a Mac is, I don't know.. (I heard a while ago that none of the OpenGL extensions for vertex & pixel shaders have been implemented for MacOS, but that might have changed)
Yeah, but if you're travelling on Connex South Central you need a mobile phone to call home and tell your loved ones every couple of days when the train breaks down, or gets cancelled, or goes the wrong way, or.. etc.
kudos for doublechecking permission before slashdotting a site that is definately gonna get slammed, come morning.
Michael didn't doublecheck shit, the submitter did. You know that if it was left up to Slashdot, the willing and the unwilling alike would see their webservers reduced to smoking rubble, just like every other day.
Oh man, you had me all excited for a second there, until I went and checked the site - to discover that it's all PC shit.
Now a DVD of stuff from the Amiga scene, that'd be worthwhile. Especially as there get to be fewer and fewer machines in the world capable of running these demos.
I agree, what a bizarre decision. This article I found has the Mobility Radeon 9000 spanking the GeForce4 440 Go handily in every single benchmark, on top of having the programmable vertex & pixel shaders, unlike the GeForce. Why on earth would Apple offer a "top of the range" Powerbook with graphics that were inferior in every way to those of it's "mid-range" model??
(p.s. the ultimate Doom 3 notebook is surely a PC with a GeForce4 4200 Go!)

..because I was living in an apartment, and neither of the two cable providers in this city (Melbourne, Australia) would do business with me. Optus basically said "no, we only do houses, not apartments, it's more profitable", and Telstra spun me some bullshit about getting permission from the body corporate etc. etc.
ADSL, on the other hand, was no hassle at all. I've moved since then, but stuck with ADSL since I now own the modem. Also, the fact that I don't own a TV means that the old cable TV + cable internet deal isn't so attractive to me.:-)
I did have various network problems until I threw away the crappy PPPoE software Telstra supplied me with and installed RASPPPoE, which works perfectly.
Am I the only one who interpreted "Googling for a date" to mean "Use google to find a date"?
Maybe. I interpreted it as typing something like "September 23" into Google to see what happened on that date in the past. Fucked if I could figure out how that could possibly be unethical. Then I read the article and figured out that I'd gotten confused by the USian slang..
It took Microsoft a few billion to make a whole OS crash reliably. If these guys are making your browser crash with a lousy 5m/yr, I think they're doing a pretty good job.
It's why they switch James Bond actors. You don't want to see James Bond realistically portrayed as a 60 yr old spy. He's a 30+ yr old guy kicking ass and sleeping with hot women.
That'd be nice, except that Pierce Brosnan is 49 - and looks it. Christ, just cast cast Rupert Everett or Robbie Williams or someone.
Slashdot is not a democratic system, you cannot vote which stories will get posted. It is a system run by the editors and they have full license to place whatever they want on the front page.
Reminds me of that 80s music video where the gal walks into the mirror, and everything's all "pencilly-looking" but in real-time... now what was that damn song? (racks brain)
This has nothing to do with the Sony/Nintendo/Square politics, but rather the fact that there are something like 50+ Million PS2s out there and only like 20 Million X-Box and Game Gubes (combined).
Actually according to Nintendo's operating results, the numbers are more like 41.6 million PS2s, 6.7 million Gamecubes and 3.9 million Xboxes. So the numbers are even more in favour of the PS2 than you posited.
I saw an entire tech company destroyed by that video. Someone mailed it around the office and reduced all the programmers to gibbering drooling idiots, incapable of ever writing another line of code.

Lack of SSE2 is a bummer but unless you're doing content creation or playing new games it won't matter.
Lack of SSE2 will not matter for any games, new or otherwise, because none of them use double-precision floats in any speed critical code paths. It'll hurt you if you want to render with Lightwave on your laptop, or run fluid dynamics simulations, or whatever. Not games.
..except for all the acronyms!! MAC, HMAC, PRF, IV.. is there a glossary somewhere for this??
I was in an Electronics store when the news broke, and people seemed to just stop buying stuff
..then the terrorists have already won.
GeForce4 MX (better?) video

Damn.. do American FM stations really play 18-24 minutes of ads per hour, like that article says??
Why would anyone bother listening to the radio if it's like that? Wouldn't you rather have silence than 4 ads for every song??
We saw this one three weeks ago.. keep up the good work, editors!

Typists would simply use a lowercase "l" (ell) key in lieu of 1 - you can probably still see this on very old documents if you look hard enough.
Or, of course, in any Jon Katz article.
I read about an insurance scam once where this guy got fire insurance for each of his cigars, over $1,000 a piece..
That is an urban legend, and in fact never happened.

If it doesn't help Janie Porche save Christmas, I don't care.

Remember, the PS2 has 4MB of video memory, period.
..and a fast enough bus to DMA the entire contents of main memory into vram every frame without breaking a sweat.

Instead, I recommend Janie Porche. She's literate and smiles.
However, she once cheered after reading a Jon Katz article, and thus is clearly incompatible with most Slashdotters.
