And this is why, when you have a locksmith open a safe with a dead body stashed in it, you kill the locksmith and put his body in the safe as well--and then you damn well better remember the combination, or someone is going to eventually wonder where all the locksmiths went!
That's why I always thought a locksmith should also be a lawyer, that way you can claim it was an exercise of attorney client privellege and the poor locksmith can live another day!
The headline should read "Why everyone should hate US cellphone carriers".
Not to be picky, but from what I read on/. it's US telecomms that suck. In Australia we have hardly any of the same complaints. My 3 mobile is on a good cap ($29 capped until $149), a good handset, great coverage and most shockingly, good online support. I can change all my account details via 3G web.
So let's get some perspective. Not all phone carriers are in the US.
As I understand it, their main complaint is that Vista search uses undocumented APIs to get a performance boost, which they're claiming is an unfair, monopolistic advantage. And one that they wouldn't necessarily have known for sure about until Vista's release.
That's just crazy talk. Google has a virtual monopoly on the internet search market because of their proprietary search technology. Now they allow everyone to search via the google API, but I'll bet you dollars to donuts that they dont use the same API internally.
this could spell the end of Microsoft's control over who gets their updates
Don't they sound proud of themselves. Call me a troll if you want, I really dont care, but isn't it Microsoft's perogative to only supply these updates to their paying customers? Although it's quite clever, this is just the sort of ammunition MS need against Linux. "See your honour, they are illegally circumventing our registration software, they must all be pirates".
The interesting bit of the article was the part where it suggests that this will lead application developers for windows to start writing programs that don't need escalated privileges. Long term, such pressures are good for the "software ecosystem".
Microsoft, to their credit have been eating this dog food for a LONG time. Every version of a MS product, such as Office, will run under a least privelleged user. And that is how it should be!
The $140 (for XP Pro) is the cost of the OS without other software. Red Hat comes with a compiler suite and a lot of other useful items, so the direct comparison of the costs of the packages is not really a valid measure.
XP Pro comes with the.NET framework with includes both the VB.NET and C# compilers.

You hear that woosh? Thats the sound of a joke going WAY over your head
Steal one of those "Meter out of service" bags they put on broken ones. Keep it in your car and put it over the meter when you park near it. Problem solved:-)
until someone steals your "Meter out of service" bag.

I am not trying to flame here, these are my beliefs and I wont go AC.
* Windows is superior to Linux.
* Christians are not close-minded because they dont agree with some scientific theories
* vi VS emacs arguments are completly pointless
* Linus is not a software prophet who can do or think no wrong
* Bill Gates is insightful about the direction of software, even though he missed the internet boat.
I imagine stores that show computers like this have had to deal with their fair share of people trying to break the system.
I used to manage a Tandy store in Australia (Radio Shack for yanks). It seemed to me that some peoples favorite past time was to see how screwed they could make a pc.
Personally, I would have loved to have had a few Knoppix CD's on hand. I would have glued them into the CD-ROM and set the PC to boot CD only. Would have saved me hours of reloading Windows from the stupid compaq restore CD's
I prefer to think of that as a chastity belt analogy. Put in that light, I think it's a great design!
A great design unless it's your belt and your protecting yourself from bubba.
... Internet Explorer market share hits 100% in my house.

Sounds like he is quite open to me.
Well at least you can get a Bottle opener
But subscribers would get them first!
Oh Come on, at least I didnt say "Imagine a beowolf cluster of these"
I've always heard it said, the first hit is free so that means that Linux is the bigger pusher.
So I guess you'd need a cluster of them then :P
This is a prescription drug containing a significant portion of Speed. It reduces appetite but also makes you unable to sleep.
Thats not as stupid as it sounds. The best test of a compilier is it being able to compile itself.
A great test of this 'Scientist' is to be able to recreate itself.
You don't own an Athlon.
