"...People can listen to music while they do other things: jog, drive, work. But you can't do those things and watch a movie. Besides, who wants to watch a movie on a 2- or 3-inch screen? It's bad enough on a 12-inch laptop screen."
There is a whole 'nuther generation coming up that has been weened on TV in addition to or INSTEAD OF Music.
They are already used to small screens (in-car DVD players) and watching 320x240 video clips on computer screens that are highly compressed and look like crap.
And they watch the same stuff over and over and over again. And they don't have to be actively engaged with it to "watch" it. They've seen whatever program or movie so many times, they know it by heart and it is just there for them when they choose to watch it.
My grandkids all come over and bring movies, they pop in a movie, watch a few minutes of it, then run around and play, then they come back for the part "they like" , then they fight or play a game, all the while, the movie is playing. They look at this stuff differently than I do.
If there was a device that had a small screen that could easily be loaded with 1 or 2 of their favorite movies or several TV shows in a compressed form, they would have that thing clipped to their belts and take them everywhere!
I wouldn't use one, but they would and the parents will be the ones to buy the things for them as soon as it becomes about as easy as buying a DVD.
If they can buy a small player and Card that has 4 Spongebob episodes on it, they'll do it. Even if they already have the DVD.
If I had a site with killer content, I would make the user-agent string exclude IE and spit back a message saying "this site does not work with IE" Then give them a list of browsers to download.
What is truely unfortunate is that most "users" I know do not know what a "browser" is.
The blue "E" is the "internet".
many users will not use any other browser unless someone else installs it for them.
And so, IE7 will soon become the default "standard", like it or not.

and the stuff is not Mac-centric, tons of periperals that are Windows only or cross-platform useable. Many times, combinations of Rebates and hidden Coupons are pointed out showing that the end result is an item that costs $0.00!
The Norwegian Minister of Modernization today at a press conference in Oslo declared that ESPERANTO would now be the only language used for official government press conferences...
The observation that "only people who can't buy it in the first place use P2P" doesn't carry any weight.
???
I never said that so please don't "quote" me like that.
I represent the "casual downloader"
You are their representative? Do you have a card?
I don't think $0.99 is a fair price, with most of it going to the label.
I see, so downloading songs from P2P is better for the artist. According the Representative of the Casual Downloaders.
This may sound crass, but at least I'm being honest when I say that when I look for music I don't think at all about the Artist and how much money they make from my purchase. I also don't think about the Record Companies. I think about Me and how to make the process as easy for ME as possible so that I am Happy. That's basically it.
I'm pretty sure most everyone I know approaches this in a similar manner and they choose a Delivery Method that is appropriate.
I agree, but I still wish that the NAMES of the fonts could be displayed in their Style for quick browsing, or is this something that I missed when reading the above link or is it a "feature" that is patented by Microsoft for Word?
just an "email" reminder that my bill was due on March 2
I haven't signed up to pay on-line and was hoping the statement would just "show up" in the mail, so when I finally called them the other day and asked about this, the person on the other end said they had were aware of some "problems" at the moment with "some" accounts and would help me make a payment over the phone if I wanted.
For 25 years I've never had a credit card statement not show up. Is this related? I don't know.
so what are you going to do, call MS and ask for your $5 and expect them to just send you a check?
Wouldn't you have to provide SOME sort of "proof" that the Beta software did the damage and NOT something YOU did, or...some "other" program did?
What was the Gas Company (AMOCO?) that offered some sort of amazing guarantee that if THEIR gas ever damaged YOUR Engine, THEY would pay for the damages!
I wonder how many people collected on that guarantee?
They would have had to jump through some serious hoops to do so, have meticulously detailed accounting that they ONLY purchased Amoco gasoline for the life of the engine, had all the proper servicing done according to schedule, etc etc etc.
The previous post about the Boss choosing MS over Apple because "they pay if they damage the data" is right on though...unfortunately
good luck with those Napster songs on your iPod!
on
The Death of the Music CD
·
· Score: 2, Informative
from the article (emphasis mine):
"Indeed, Napster's To Go subscription service allows buyers to essentially rent an unlimited amount of music for $15 per month. A subscription-based service will be built into the latest version of Microsoft Windows; for between $10 and $20, users will access songs for a monthly fee but will be unable to burn them onto CDs. The only way they'll be able to listen to them is via a digital music player such as the iPod, or on a computer.
That's nice except that according to Napster: You can't listen to NAPSTER-downloaded songs on an iPod. So you won't really be able to listen to them via a digital music player such as the iPod.
more confusion for the consumer who doesn't follow this stuff blow by blow.

I just Googled that phrase and it seems he is the only one using it. AND no one seems to be paying much attention to him.
oh well, he tried,

I wonder if REAL or MS has "invested" anything in this company recently?
The only reason SCO could hold out as long as it did was with money from MS.
Me too, that's why I pick a rate and charge a 1 hour minimum.
My rates are CHEAP too and they know in advance.
No more guilt trips for me.
Nothing wrong with bartering either. Bartering has worked out VERY well for me in a few instances....
This is promotional stuff that you give away at trade shows.
Or you make it available in only ONE place (makes it "scarce")....like the Company Store.
???
I never said that so please don't "quote" me like that.

Nothing really lost, they weren't going to buy it anyways.
BUT, when they DO have money...they BUY their music, either on CD or via iTunes or some other vendor.
When your TIME becomes WORTH something you don't SPEND it all on P2P.
I don't know, that's what I see going on around me....
What's a CD?
is it like the iPod thing I use in the car?
Then buy CDs , what is the problem?
or are you some sort of bizarre Music Puritan that is offended that people actually buy music from iTunes?
so, are you saying that the act of "not paying the use tax" triggers a State Income Tax Audit somehow?
How exactly does that happen?
I got a new G5 iMac from Amazon, and saved $166 in sales tax (compared to buying online from Apple directly).
It arrived the next day even though I chose "Super Saver Shipping"!
click click click, ....nothing.

Gave the company the rights to use what I was providing for them from now until eternity in whatever medium existed and could exist
and
Gave the company blanket immunity from anyone seeking damages and that I would basically take the heat.
Needless to say, I took out my Sharpie® and just made most of the page BLACK , signed it and faxed it back.
They used the stuff I sent them even though I didn't agree to ANY of their terms.
(note this was not for a job....it was stuff I provided to a TV show..)
OK, so where would you put her in the lineup?
11.0 Halle Berry
11.1 Eartha Kitt
11.2 Julie Newmar
11.3 Nastassja Kinski...
meow!
Ads just sort of slowly appeared over the years and before you knew it...it was like Broadcast TV, only you paid for it.
now the only ones with no ads are the ones with "Premium" content that you pay extra for, like Movie Channels and HBO.
I don't recall any sort of great wailing when ads started back then....'course there was no Interweb then either.
I don't know how we survived.
